I will generally copy this information over thread to thread each week for ease of finding - you can always expect the schedule at the top of any weekly thread
Law and Order
Any reveals, for the current chapters must be behind spoilers or detail curtains. When we get further in you don’t need to hide details that were revealed in previous chapters.
Questions on vocab, grammar, nuance, and the like are both welcome and encouraged. If you’re not sure if it’s a spoiler, assume it is and use one of the above options to hide the text.
You are encouraged to speculate and guess wildly
Be kind about other peoples’ wild guesses
Even if you don’t read the chapter(s) in time, you are still encouraged to post in the thread for that reading once you have finished it. I advise not reading ahead in the threads as you may see spoilers.
To gauge participation - a poll!
Are you reading week 12 of 眼球堂の殺人?
Yes, I’m planning to read along/am reading along this week
It finally makes sense why perfect number of pillars is chosen to be placed in the white bowl since Aiko is a mathematician and that’s the reason why I gave the book one additional star. Otherwise, I would have given the book only one star.
I’m disappointed though that of all the long explanations, there is no mention of Todoroki’s toilet for the past three days. And I really dislike the nothingness of praise for The Book. Will definitely avoid books from this author.
Finished too !
(Finished last week, actually …. I’m enjoying a 眼球堂-free week !)
Can’t seem to make the spoiler tags work on my phone today !
Honestly, I found this week very disappointing. The whole story is already a mess, was it absolutely necessary to add another mastermind in Aiko ? Especially since, at least for me, it doesn’t make the story any more believable. If anything, I find it even worse. I must admit that, at least, the author tried to tie up all the little loose threads and « clues » from the book, but in such and unbelievable way, I’d rather they had left well alone.
On the other end, a bright spot : we didn’t have to suffer through another one of Todoroki’s rant. And the end of week 11, when Towada says they’ll just have to go and ask him, my heart physically sank !
I think you’re being overly generous here !
People often complain that 点と線, with all its train schedules, is tedious. I liked it; it’s old-school, sure, but it’s plausible. Same with 水車館の殺人. I wasn’t a fan of this one, probably something to do with the writing, and some parts were far-fetched, but at least it could have happened. 眼球堂 feels like the author sat down and instead of deciding to write a good story, decided to write the most twisted story possible, just to impress readers. That’s anathema to me
I have the perverse impulse to actually go and at least have a look at the other. It’s a 8- (10- ? I forgot…) book series, you know !
Oh my goodness I haven’t disliked a Mystery Book Club pick this much since 七回死んだ男! I just kept being like "ugh it’s still going?’ Thanks for sticking through it till the end with me! I appreciated the discussion
The murderer being dead when they arrived was a huge let down for me. So was the quick resolution of ‘oh hey we found a nicely labeled remote’. The extra bit at the end about Aiko also did nothing for me…I just don’t like either character much at all. They feel more like animated tropes than likeable human characters. Argh. What even was this book I for one have no desire to read another by the same author. I can more or less see why some people, especially native speakers for whom the over-wrought language wouldn’t challenge, may enjoy it - but it’s not my type of book at all.
I don’t think I’ll join the next Mystery Book Club session as I find it hard to read and switch between two mystery books at the same time and adhere to the book club schedule.
And I enjoy better reading one mystery book from the start till the end without mixing in other books.
That’s why I haven’t continued reading the 癒し系book yet even though Week 4 started yesterday. I decided to read it after I finish the Detective Conan light novel that I’m reading now.
