Ch 1 impressions

I love the 三角関係 being set up with Rika & Mayuri already, and the contrast between the two. While earlier on I said I probably would have gone for Rika, Mayuri is the far more interesting of the two so far. I wonder if there would have been such a sense of distance with Rika, if you made different choices

I was confused when we were only just being told the アミティエ during the tea party (also I love that Rika’s tea geek-ness was put to good use), but when it got to the surprise that the 3 of them were Amitie & rooming together, it was worth it. I definitely really wasn’t expecting that… The traditional Class S & マリみて pairing system is too burnt into my mind (also frankly 3 ppl seems a bit bound to cause trouble). I wonder what the twins’ situation is? Did they get put together? Who are they paired with?

I also liked Mayuri warning the two of them not to do stuff that would cause unwanted rumors for them, since it’s a cloistered all-girls 寄宿 school. That was a nice touch of realism, and 白い部屋のふたり 山岸凉子作品集3 | L22 comes to mind. The underwear scene was really silly tho :joy:

Overall I really enjoy the cast so far, and am looking forward to seeing how things develop with everyone. Some of the skipped scenes left me feeling a bit disjointed though. It’s like the opposite of Type Moon VNs where you get way too much detail about everything… Here I could maybe use a little more.

Looking back on ch 1, I find Suo’s combination of meekness and social anxiety painfully relatable (I’m not that bad anymore, but high school me…), and am also sympathetic to the “I missed some random, very important piece of information”. It also makes some sense, given how she seems to have been pretty socially isolated (if I understood correctly). I thought it was pretty messed up that she just ditched her upperclassman guide, but also I could understand the circumstances, and can imagine doing the same back then (and then feeling scared & guilty about it afterwards). I’m surprised this didn’t come up in some way, like some school staff checking in on her, or the upperclassman going to get her or something. Maybe it will?

That said, I don’t get why everyone finds her beautiful and mysterious. She just seems constantly flustered to me

In case anyone didn’t get this, 小公女 ポプラ世界名作童話 | L20 is The Little Princess - which reminds me, I still need to read it someday :trade_mark:

Yeah that really caught me by surprise lol

Finally!!!

A general thought: it’s interesting that the Amitie system is with people in your grade, rather than 先輩後輩 pairings. I’m so used to things imitating マリみて, and I’m curious to see what role the Amitie thing plays in all this.

Idg why do many Japanese games are so bad about this. Hasn’t been an issue on Switch so far thankfully

Not really affecting my enjoyment either way fwiw. Tho I’m looking at @javerend 's character count table and see ch 2 is twice as long as ch 1 :sob: Trying not to fret about pacing

Those are cumulative, all of the chapters except 5 and 8 are about the same length

Mm, I got the cumulative bit, just failed at rough math apparently  62-28 = 34… So I guess it’s only 1/4 longer. Thx for clarifying

Same! Really happy about that.

One thing that sort of caught me by surprise a bit at the beginning part of chapter 3 was that Suoh has to tell the others about the club system ‘that she heard about through her library committee stuff’ and they’re ‘walking the club floor for the first time’ although Rikka showed and told her about them (specifically the cooking club) in the first chapter. Maybe that gets resolved in the scene, but it took me out of the story enough that I’m taking a break here.

The whole thing with Rikka around tea party time also wasn’t well done imo. I did not guess correctly (were you guys able to infer from what the text gave you previously?) and had to rewind multiple times. So I also got to see the party scene with the not good outcome where Rikka becomes an outcast of sorts.

Here’s what I mean when I say it’s not done well; the divergence of events doesn’t make sense. So Suoh guessed the right name based on the wrong clue; but that’s all in her head at that point. Her initial sentence explaining Erika at the party is the same. So it doesn’t make sense that in one case, Rikka explodes and causes a scene, and in the other she stays calm and reasonable. It’s only after that initial outburst that it becomes clear (to Erika at least, somehow) that Suoh was just guessing.

These minor hiccups aside, I like the VN! It very much delivers in atmosphere and cuteness.
