Apparently not. :person_facepalming: We just about need a list of “unofficial rules of Japanese fiction” or something.

I don’t think that these rules are different from the ones in everyday Japanese lives.

無人島 arrival

This has been a wild island-hopping ride. Surely 亮’s got a tracking device on her of some sort, though I’m inclined to believe he found her luggage and stuck something in there rather than installing a tracking app.

…Of course, we can’t rule out 蒲田, of course. He seems like a good guy, and while his unofficial proposal seemed poorly-timed, no obvious red flags have been raised yet, I think. Guess it depends on what happens now that he and 夏奈 are all alone (?). Could be he’s working with 亮 for some unknown reason; I hope not, because I can’t see any reason to do so other than to torture 夏奈, and I wouldn’t think that @cat would be into that kind of stuff; 夏奈’s not a horrible enough person for it.

This whole sequence has been stressing me out, haha. We just really need to get to some 亮 shanking and be done with it. I’ve been entertaining the idea of 夏奈 somehow being an unreliable narrator, but the evidence doesn’t seem to quite match up.

So I won’t comment on if it happens or not but that’s not a deal breaker for me. The only thing you absolutely won’t find in books I recommend is animal cruelty + killing. Everything else is kinda fair game.

Fair enough. Hopefully nothing like that happens here, but we’ll see!

After two reveals in a row (police storm in)

Well well well. Glad to see I was on the money. But I’m not done yet! New theory time: the twin theory doesn’t account for 奏 being violent before, and triplets is boring, so here we go: 奏 actually has a split personality, and one of them’s デーモン亮 #2. :japanese_goblin: How is he possibly going to justify the twin-switching thing? Is 夏奈 going to be abused/Japanese enough to just accept it?

I have to say, that 蒲田 reveal was eye-rolling. I wasn’t sure how the author was going to wiggle out of making him a truly nice guy, so I guess here’s my answer. I guess he was the one to put that note in 夏奈’s bag to scare her into fleeing into the middle of nowhere, but I feel like this also confirms 奏 hid a tracker on her? Him showing up with the police was also pretty lol, I have to say.

There’s juuuust enough left in the book for one more juicy reveal, maybe two, so we’ll see. We need to allocate some pages towards body disposal, surely.

Ridiculously dramatic  I think this whole “arc” is the bit they changed between the free web version and the published one.

What did they change, out of curiosity?

I think it was just cut? @Biblio would know more details if she remembers

If I remember correctly, cat was talking about some “they are on the run and moving around from place to place” or something along those lines plot line that didn’t exist at all in the webnovel. I remember being soooo confused at first when she started talking about that and I was like… are we reading the same story? :see_no_evil:

And done! I was hoping to finish this up several days ago, but life got in the way so here we are. Thoughts on the ending hidden below.

Ending thoughts

Wow; I will say I wasn’t expecting that ending, specifically the part where 夏奈 essentially accepts the possibility of 亮 having been the one to survive and doesn’t even check the papers her mom gave her to verify his story. Could this be considered (a variation of?) Stockholm Syndrome? I liked the ghostly whispering of 「ナナハ、ダマサレテイル」at the end as well; whether it was her conscience or 奏/亮 rattling on the bars of his cold cage one last time, I thought it was a nice touch. I was personally hoping 夏奈 would kill the remaining twin and raise her kids by herself like her mom did, but alas.

As for the book as a whole, it was pretty fun! Thank you for recommending it @cat! I would definitely recommend it to those looking for something fun, fast, and a little tense.
