I’m enjoying it so far! I like how there’s a lot happening right from the start. The illustrations also add a very nice touch to the story, and help visualize the characters (even though we have some nice descriptions as well). I like Nico the cat too, and how he’s her sidekick (but others can’t hear him speak).
So far we also have a good characterization of Edgar - he is a (well-known) noble, he helped Lydia, but he is still doing it for his personal gain in the end and is not afraid to use his power to get what he wants. I’m looking forward to see how their character dynamics will evolve. He did mention he would take Lydia to London eventually (if I got that right), but I’m guessing that will be after she helps him? We’ll have to see
I’ve only read up to the first *** break, but wow, what a fun start! I like how the author uses language so far; they set the scene very well, and I’m loving the roguish atmosphere set up, haha. Can’t wait to meet our 妖精博士~
More week 1 thoughts as they pop up, up through p.17 when リディア’s about to board the boat:
I’ve never understood the trope of “social outcast continues easily hidden behavior and where wonders why they’re a social outcast”. You could just not constantly tell people you see fairies? リディア does give her reasons here for it, granted.
The thought of ニコ walking, sitting, and reading like a human is kind of freaking me out, not gonna lie.
Did I read that right? 100 people killed via (I resume armed) robbery in the US? Not sure if I should be impressed or concerned if it’s our guy…
Edit: ack, sorry @Kroki, didn’t mean to reply to you.
Week 1
Wow, what an exciting first week! I can’t help but feel this whole boat chase was a setup by our young man here; perhaps he’s the guy from the beginning? It’s a pretty slick move if so. I’m trying to pinpoint what genre this is giving me vibes of; something with a handsome rogue in it for sure.
I laughed when リディア accepted the fact that as a cat, ニコ is useless, haha. I feel like he could’ve been useful, though? I mean, a cat could do some damage if it jumped on someone with the intention of hurting them. And I guess no one at all can see him? Seems like a bit of a waste; I’d like them to see her with a fluffy cat doing weird stuff, haha.
I flew through it so fast I had to double check if my bookmark was off. Very short week and finally more dialogue than anything else, yay
For now - I like how everyone is described aside from Edgar (Armin is the best right now).
Possibly projecting (haha) but…
I feel like the author is leaning too far into constantly shoving description of how he is “ authoritative noble:sparkles:manipulating:sparkles: beautiful domineering cool:sparkles:hot:sparkles:smart:sparkles:capable:sparkles: wicked possibly-evil:sparkles: so love him now, be attracted now, reader!!!”
Like, let the man speak without going into this tangent in description please
My 13-14 year old self that watched this anime with a classmate and went kyaa kyaa about Edgar would be so annoyed at my reactions right now lmao.
Disclaimer: it was so long ago I don’t actually remember the plot at all.
I remembered it was a short 12 episode thing, but not much more
According to google-sensei it covers 3 volumes. Might be interesting to watch after finishing this book hehe
Man, I hope the rest of the book is as fun as this first chapter; I’m surprised by how much I’m loving it. It’s got all the details I normally love seeing in a fantasy novel! Edgar’s (at least stated) reason for needing リディア’s (is that Lydia?) help is a super cool one; I hope he’s the descendant of an ancient fairy lord and isn’t just in it to steal a cool sword and sapphire, haha.
I’m also liking リディア’s pragmatism here, where even though she seems like a bullseye for a country bumpkin, she’s careful about not letting herself get too taken in by all of this. It was nice seeing confirmation that people can see ニコ as just a regular cat; I wonder if he can turn invisible in their eyes at will? Or if people always see him.
I wasn’t expecting the setting to go high society on us all of a sudden as well; I figured we’d be spending more time in リディア’s world first, though I’m not complaining. It’s interesting to note that despite said high society, the author didn’t pull out much honorific language here.
Quick question for you all: how would 青騎士卿 be translated? Blue(/green) knight lord? Anyone know what the official English translation is? The first thing that came to mind hearing about him was the Green Knight (of Gawain fame), though I don’t believe he’s generally affiliated with faeries, correct?
I have to say, this would be a nice twist.
I thought the party scene was really well-done, giving us all this characterization without feeling too upfront about it!
卿 is an honorific, like 様, so it would go in front in English (Lord (?) blue knight). I don’t know enough about folklore to say if it’s a “real” thing or not.
I have been away from the forum for a hot second but why is there no cogwheel (on mobile at least) to give me the option to add spoilers?
Another language (?) question. Just don’t spoil the scene by checking my q before reading week 4!
Phrase from a cool scene on week 4 that need help
「ああ、ハスクリー君か。きみにそんな名前があるとは知らなかったが」
I see no audiobook on audible so I checked the anime, but it was just “Ah, Hearthkley-kun ka, kimi mo shitsukoi ne.” Which is obviously not what was written here, though 100% true.
So…. Looking at the scene we had no new names introduced, what am I missing?
UPD: And just this week’s feedback as it was over pretty soon after - yay, action! So much fun!
