うらみちお兄さん (Life Lessons With Uramichi-Oniisan) is a comedy manga by 久世岳 about the jaded late-twenties to early-thirties cast of a children’s show. It’s currently at 9 volumes and has also been adapted into an anime.

Oh I LOVED this anime! I am curious about the manga 
I’m pretty sure that little “summary” coulda been phrased better, but, eurgh. I’m not good with words.
This is one of the few manga that I’m collecting in both English and Japanese. The puns(?) in the first volume are what had me deciding to keep it when I started getting serious about learning Japanese and sold a lot of my translated manga (which, granted, some of that was just that I’d liked it in middle/high school but not anymore, but some of that was that I was planning on replacing them with JP editions), since by nature they’d be different in both languages. Although I don’t remember any more coming up after this volume, which makes me sad… I liked Uramichi randomly saying names of animals that sounded dirty to make Iketeru laugh… Though I also don’t remember how far I got in EN so I’m still hoping there will be more.

This is reminding me that I need to rewatch the anime again. The Japanese puns and jokes are so good and I love all the millennial sadness.

I was hoping that the EN version would say what the JA⚫︎RAC Uramichi mentions in ch 1 is, but they still write it exactly the same way, just with the note: “A certain copyright collection society, the Japanese equivalent of the RI⚫︎A.” Like, that’s not helpful!! I have zero clue what that is either, and neither can I look it up since it’s been censored!! Arggh, and you’ll see the same names not censored in some works that are in others, which just makes it clear that there’s no point to it aside from making things harder to read and getting in the way of understanding, which just makes it even more frustrating. I probably shouldn’t even care, but auuuughh…
In ch 4 though, “ゼ⚫︎シィ買って帰っても、すぐ上にジャ⚫︎プ積まれてるんだよね…” turns into “I’ve been leaving wedding magazines around, but he just stacks manga on top of them…” I figured the second was ジャンプ, but at least I know what the first is now even if I still don’t know the title…

Yeah part of why I made that drawing was the 妄想 that maybe one day Uramichi might quirk a teeny-tiny, genuine smile at Iketeru’s reactions and Iketeru would notice it, and he’d find more animals with dirty-sounding names to tell Uramichi to prompt him to tell him more because he wanted to see it again… Because I wanted to see Uramichi smile for real… And that hasn’t diminished at all…
So far I feel like the temp rating of L31 is a little high—I’m finding it easier/less energy-consuming than NatsuYuu—but this is still probably one that’s better to read after you’ve got a fair bit of other reading and vocab under your belt since a fair bit of the humor relies on understanding what’s being said. I got this over a year ago, and I think I’m glad I didn’t start trying to read it then, as there’s still quite a bit I gotta look up now.
JA⚫︎RAC is JASRAC, which stands for the Japanese Society for Rights of Authors, Composers, and Publishers. It showed up in the margins of 黒子のバスケ vol 7 when one character started singing some song, with what’s presumably the code for said song. So there’s that found out!
