Not precisely a dialect, but I’m very interested in Yakuwarigo (Yakuwarigo - Wikipedia).
Does anyone know any articles or resources?

Quick search gives me these:

^I’ve actually watched this one as I like this channel, ことラボ, a lot and can recommend his videos more generally

There’s actually a bunch more that came up but with differing levels of depth and relevance. I don’t actually know of many English sources if you want those, but perhaps @javerend would as that seems something in their wheelhouse

Went ahead and added them to the table. :+1:

Which reminds me: if something’s been added to the homepost and you (in general, anyone reading this post) tries out a resource and finds that it’s not focused on learning, is too general, just isn’t a good resource for one reason or another, please post here about it! There’s a good chance some/most of this stuff is going to be unvetted in general when it’s added, and sometimes useful, interesting-looking stuff just turns out not to be. :person_shrugging:

The tool I use by far the most is a pretty simple one: wiktionary. It generally will have entries on common grammatical structures, even ones for dialects, and has pages written in both english and japanese that you can swap between with a single click, and will also have things categorized based on the dialects they show up in. If you wanted to say, look up words in Shikoku Japanese, there’s both an english entry category and a slightly larger japanese entry category. Similarly, wikipedia pages for dialects will generally have info in both english and japanese page describing things. They usually aren’t an end-all-be-all type source, although some dialect wikipedia pages have a pretty impressive amount of content, but they’re enough to kinda get your foot in the door and then use that knowledge to look for other more detailed resources.

Sometimes you will get lucky and they’ll be very detailed and have a lot of good sources to follow up on, but there isn’t usually a ton written about dialects in english from a scholarly level.

Your best bet as a language learner is to find some teacher or teaching organization who’s advocating for using the dialect (lots of different socioling reasons why different groups may or may not do this), and use their resources, but then you’re still gonna be working with pretty spotty knowledge, since most people don’t actually consciously think about the reasons they speak the way they do

One of the videos cat linked is from NINJAL, which is super good for linguistics resources. They also have a website that has some stuff in both english and japanese, but I’ve never looked super deep into it for dialects specifically. If I run a search for 方言 on their archives, get a decent number of potential articles to read though, but not necessarily about a dialect for learning purposes.
