Oh, that’s so cool, thank you! I can really see how passionate you are about Kansai-ben

I’ll definitely look at that list in more detail. Maybe I’ll put Kansai-Ben onto my goal list for next year  Ironically a friend of mine is from Shikoku where they speak Kansai-ben as well, though she is speaking in Tokyou-ben to me :joy:

Plus I like resource lists, and finding all this stuff manually was a bit of a pain… so I figured maybe I could save someone else the trouble

Yes!! Come over to the dark fun side… we have cookies… or okonomiyaki I suppose :stuck_out_tongue:

Mmm, Shikoku-ben is actually a separate (but similar in some ways) dialect: Shikoku dialect - Wikipedia - they’re both part of the same 近畿方言 - Wikipedia (きんきほうげん) family… しらんけど

Acc to that Wikipedia page (comparing to Chuugoku-ben):

Shikoku dialect uses ken for “because”, and -yoru in progressive aspect and -toru or -choru in the perfect. Some people in Kōchi Prefecture use kin, kini, or ki instead of ken, - (Hata) or - (Tosa) instead of -yoru, and -chō (Hata) or -chū (Tosa) instead of -choru.

That’s all very different than Kansai-ben… to the point where I don’t quite understand what the 2nd half is even referring to.

The largest difference between Shikoku dialect and Chūgoku dialect is in pitch accent. Except southwestern Ehime and western Kochi (yellow area on the right map), many dialects in Shikoku use the Kyoto-Osaka-type accent or its variations, and are similar to Kansai dialect, but Chūgoku dialect uses a Tokyo-type accent.

Now you’ve got me! :joy: I’m such a craver for okonomiyaki

Hhhmmm, thanks for taking a glance! They are living in northern part of Shikoku, but I guess I need to clarify with her, what kind of dialect she is speaking before my expectations grow too much :joy:

Thanks to learning Kansai-ben, I’ve been slowly developing a better sense of Japanese geography, and I was like wait… 四国 isn’t Kansai, is it?! I’m so bad at this sorta thing tho… But I guess Kansai is in 本州 (main Island) and then 四国、九州 are the ones to southwest, and 北海道 is north… nice to put a place to the names… which feels odd to say, considering they’re place names

Maybe you’ll make a 四国弁 thread one day :stuck_out_tongue:

Great thread! I’ve been enjoying your recs here and elsewhere. When I lived in Japan, I was in Kansai, so Kansai-ben feels very warm and nostalgic to me.

You’ve got me interested in カーネーション. Where were you able to watch it?

Nice to hear  Which area did you live in? Any recs for like TV shows or radio from there? I know それゆけ!メッセンジャー (which I like) and also ラジオ関西 which I haven’t listened to much from yet

watching it on Amazon Prime JP, but it’s also on NHK On Demand (which I had to sign up for on its own website)

Cool, thank you! I think I might need a VPN for those. This would be a good excuse to finally, finally figure out how to set up a VPN on my computer.

I wish I had some good recs for you in return, but alas, I lived there quite a long time ago, so I’m well out of the loop. I was in Kyoto for a while, and then Kobe. I’ve grown fond of where I currently live in America, but I still miss Kobe a lot!
