It seems a lot of people have voted for starting at 6th of May, so I’m wondering if the club will start this week after all?
As stated previously:
Okay, so we’ve got the start date (13th May) and everyone seems happy with the schedule. It’s a pretty even split for whether we have a catch-up week, so let’s see how we feel when we get closer to the halfway point.
There’s some interest in the Korean translation, so the threads will be posted in All Languages
I can postpone the due date once per book but yeah the library due dates are forcing me to try and blast through the books faster than the book clubs (~3-4 weeks total loan time). Issue is I am in too many book clubs and taking out too many books…
I’ll definitely be joining in on this one! Like a few other people, I started this one years ago as one of my first books but it was too difficult then and I abandoned it about a quarter of the way through – would be lovely to revisit it with much better comprehension! Also, I love the movie and heard the book was significantly different so I want to finally be able to compare the two!
Out of curiosity, how do people usually read for these book clubs?
Do you read the weekly amount all in one go, or do you try and do a bit each day, or some other approach?
Personally, I usually read it all in one go, unless I get frustrated with the difficulty and feel like I need to put it down before I go crazy!
I think everyone is a bit different. I tend to read during my commute or if I have short breaks during the day (eg. while cooking), so I just read as much as I can in the short time I have and usually take ~2 days per book (club). If I read manga, I might divide a chapter in 2 if it’s too long/difficult, but prefer to read a single chapter in a sitting before bed. If it’s a longer book (the Harry Potter club tends to have longer chapters - they’re about an hour to read each according to kindle), then I’ll need more time and will try to also read it during weekends on my free time.
For me, it really depends on the difficulty of the book, and the time I have. At the beginning, I take some time to try and read, and see how fast I am. If it takes me something like 20 minutes to read that week’s part, then I know I can do that during my commute or my lunch break, and I read it all in one go. If it’s longer than that, I just cut it up into parts, and read whenever I have time.
Of course, it also depends on if I’m reading the physical book or the ebook, and if it’s the physical book, what the size of the book is. If the book is very large and heavy, then no matter how long or short the chapters might be, I won’t carry that in my bag, and instead I’d much rather read it in the evenings or weekend.
Agree with it depends. For books that are at or below my level I usually do the reading all at once. For anything that’s more of a challenge for me I tend to read as far as I have stamina for at a time, or read until there’s an obvious section break.
I’ve finished Chapter 1, but I admit its taking a lot longer to read each page than I expected, so I’ll probably be doing a few pages each day instead of doing it one big batch.
I’m going to try my best to keep up with you all, but I may start falling behind at some point.
I also plan to re-read the last few sentences of Chapter 1 later, because I didn’t understand why Kiki’s mum installed the bell. I’m looking forward to reading through all this book though with y’all.
So one of my goals is to read this this year anyway and I actually started on Friday. This club couldn’t have come up at a more perfect time. I just hope I can keep up with this and Super Cub at the same time during the summer. (my work life balance gets thrown way off in the summer)
Even if you guys don’t keep up with the club pacing, you can always read what people are saying as you finish the sections and definitely should put any of your thoughts down too
She gets one or two years older in each book and even marries in the last one.
Since I’m still waiting for the book to be delivered, I started watching the animated movie! I’m not sure how well the difficulty of the movie can be related to the difficulty of the book, but I can tell that the dialogues at the very least are pretty nice and easy to understand for me. I’ll have to wait for the book to see the extent of the description however, as that’s generally where I find the most new vocab.
Enjoying this big ass hard cover version with images and a bunch of furigana while listening to the audiobook.
So far, it feels identical to the Ghibli movie.
Are you talking about this?
Edit: Nvm I decided to be a smart person and just look on your profile. It is, in fact, not that one lol.
This seems great for practicing my listening! I just did the first chapter and it was quite manageable (although it helps that it’s quite similar to the beginning of the movie so far)!
I read the first 3 volumes of these movie manga before, also went through the movie media flashcards a few years back, only missed the animation. I can’t remember the main plot nor ending so it’s pretty much all new for me after she bakes a cake.
You should share any good ones! I have the paperback and so far I just got one small illustration of Jiji.
