According to Wikipedia, one plot line is set in Kagawa and later Kochi, while the other one in Yamanashi. Which one would you say is the predominant one, if any?
I’m a big reader of fantasy in English as well, and as with others, have not read much in Japanese. So looking through my own library for potential candidates (assuming no manga, no translations, and not an adaption of anything else like a video game):
クォンタムデビルサーガ アバタールチューナーI | L29 (Just barely skirting the rules of “no adaptions”; the author was one of the scriptwriters for the games but left partway through, and this is her version of the games’ story; might also be considered too scifi)
I mean, it could have been worse, right? I’d say it’s a good beginner mystery/time travel book; not particularly well-written, but good for a learner who’d need lots of repetition (which is also not the point of Napthalene’s list, granted. )
I put some books I didn’t love on my list of entry level novels, but not a book like that where I wanted to chuck it against the wall a multiple points. Iirc you were the only person in the club to not actively hate the book, though
I started an odd little list for Spanish, focused on Strange short stories. I was looking for some things to read quickly, and I just keep stumbling into the weirdest short stories. If anyone has any other ideas, you can tell me here or I can even add you directly as a collaborator!
I’d say the Kagawa plot line is more predominant, so I would put it in there.
For your nature list, I have しあわせのパン | L33 which was not extremely exciting as a book, but interesting and chill anyways. And lots of (Hokkaido) nature!
Also when I think of nature, 鹿の王 1 | L36 definitely comes to mind (it’s technically geared towards teenagers, but I thought the concepts are complicated enough…). It’s a (medieval) fantasy series with a big touch on medicine.
Regarding your prefectures collection,
雪国 | L47 is set in Niigata 糞尿譚 | L38 is widely understood to be set in Fukuoka prefecture 神の子どもたちはみな踊る | L31 is set in Hyogo (oh you covered that already, did you?) 村上海賊の娘 一 | L40 is set in 瀬戸内海 but I don’t know which prefecture (maybe somebody else knows?) 博多豚骨ラーメンズ (series) | L30?? is set in Fukuoka (it’s not explicitly called a LN but it has many of its features, so maybe not)
I posted my list of 4-koma recommendations. For each entry I just gave a short “main theme” mention. Is there anything else people would like to know about the entries that I could possibly add?
That one makes sense! I didn’t think of it because it’s set in a modern period, but it fits.
That doesn’t really feel like fantasy to me. More like urban legends? Someone should make a list for those too
There is magic in there. It’s not that important until volume ~5, so I didn’t think about it, but it makes sense. I guess I could also add 竜殺しのブリュンヒルド (series) | L33-36?? in there for the same reason… but I don’t think it’s at the “recommended” level
Ooooh, I have heard of that series, I should check it out.
I have been consistently voting for that one in the LN book club, might as well check it out.
There’s a very naked woman on that cover, by the way. But I added it to my pile of stuff to check in any case.
All three are SF as far as I am concerned.
That’s a bit different than what I was looking for, yes.
I have added the rest to my TBR I think I know what I am reading this year.
I’ve been wanting to make a yokai/demons/legends/folklore list, but it’s so hard to tell what should and shouldn’t be included (and even what to call it ). I wouldn’t have thought to call 夜市 urban legends to be honest, but maybe it sort of fits? It’s more fantasy than horror in my mind, but not exactly fantasy either. I’d also never think to categorize it as isekai…
I’ve also read several books on the theme “appears supernatural but ultimately isn’t”, and while they refer to ghost stories and urban legends a lot, in the end they’re basically mysteries, so I have no idea what kind of list they would belong to. And whether putting them in a list like that would either be misleading or spoilery (depending on title).
Edit: Well, I made a list:
It’s sort of a mix of everything, and I’m sure there are about a million books I could add, but for now it only includes ones I’ve read. As always, open to suggestions.
@brandon can we please move the delete button for the lists to the bottom, under save? (Or even bring save to the top). I’m in constant danger of deleting my lists, it’s so natural to click there.
The brother do get isekai’d, though
But overall, anything that’s unsettling (and potentially supernatural) in a modern environment kinda goes in the “urban legends” bin for me. Being the only person who remembers their little brother existed sounds like it would be unsettling . Edit: Ah, also the getting in by accident bit. Very urban legend-y.
Other books by the same author, like 秋の牢獄 | L31 and 白昼夢の森の少女 | L33 fit into that category too.
Is there a limit to the number of items a list is able to have?
It would be useful to have a “switch to series/volume” button - admittedly, it’s easier now that you can search by series, but it would be convenient if you’ve added the wrong item (volume instead of series or vice versa) to fix with one click rather than [add correct item > delete incorrect item > reposition], especially for lists that have a specific ordering.
Might there be a chance of drag and drop rearranging?
A grid view toggle might be useful
A minor thing: lists display Children’S with an uppercase ‘S’ for book series (single books are normal).
I scanned my library, and what stood out most to me was 秋の牢獄 | L31 (or is this more “supernatural”? At least in the first story there was a ghost, right?) and the classic 鬼滅の刃 1 | L25 .
See, I’m not sure. If I start including anything supernatural, almost all horror should be included. Even my own personal criteria for the list are not super clear to me. Ideally I’d want it to be geared towards established folklore (yokai, older urban legends, traditional ghost stories), but I have no idea where or even how to draw the line.
I’m keeping all your suggestions (@Naphthalene’s too, thanks!) in mind and will see how I’ll proceed. Naphthalene’s suggestions I haven’t read so I have no clear picture, but even 秋の牢獄, which I have read, and 鬼滅の刃 (of which I’ve watched a little) I’m not sure what to do about.
Ah, that reminds me of 七つの怖い扉 | L32
A collection of short stories (well, 7 as the title implies) that revolves mostly around ghosts/yokai. Not really my jam, but short stories rarely are.
