I’m kinda interested, but am unable to find a preview or digital edition of it anywhere in English or Japanese. Do you know anywhere I can preview it?

Also I like the way you have some discussion points included. I might try that if I run future book clubs

There’s no digital Japanese edition afaik, so you’d have to check the English version for that.

Right, I looked for both and didn’t see an English digital either. Maybe I can hunt more later

Edit: I found some scans of the English through “other” means. I think if I can manage to find a JP physical at a reasonable cost I’ll join, but that’s not looking very likely unfortunately. (I’m only ordering from Suruga-ya rn, and afaict they don’t have it. Amazon US is nearly $20, which No, and Kinokuniya US was extreme). That just leaves BookOff, which still seems pretty slim they’d have a copy

Oh, you’re right. Apologies, I just assumed there was a digital English edition.

Just saw, no worries. I found scans of the English. It looks cool (and I think I read it as a teen), but impractical to acquire JP

Here are a couple of English digital websites that I found:

I removed your links, as those are both to non-official sources for the manga (i.e. they’re pirated). Please only post official sources; thank you!

Oh thanks, my bad. Yes it looks like it is still in print!

I finished it, a day late. Will review and start a new thread for volume 2.

Will take a shot at the discussion points:

How does Otomo use cyberpunk elements to critique society and politics?

  • all of the advanced technology appear to be a part of the military and used to fuel further research for more power and coersion. The ‘Army’ only appear to value life when it is an asset to their cause
  • the Army uses the police to support their cause
  • there are gangs and violence between the gangs that appear to go on unchecked
  • the Army use their power and violate rules of society to manipulate people and get what they want
  • there do not appear to be checks and balances for the Army and its only vulnerability are individuals that happen to have what they want for brief moments

In what ways do Tetsuo and Kaneda’s contrasting personalities reflect
the themes of chaos vs. control in Akira?

- I’m not sure that we really see much of Tetsuo’s true original personality but he has a carefree attitude and likes to wield his power and leverage it over others (chaos) while Kaneda cares about others and naturally becomes part of the resistance (control) while trying to help his friend Tetsuo

- the duality of chaos and control escalate as the chaos increases to the point where the characters go to extreme measures for self-preservation. They have in all likelihood reached a point of no return and no forgiveness (let’s see in the next volumes!)

Discuss the role of psychic powers as a metaphor for human potential and the consequences of unchecked ambition.

- it feels somewhat limitless but comes at a great cost to oneself and others in the vacinity. It also naturally draws the attention of others: the greedy ‘enemies’ want to use, leverage and further the potential while friends try to hold it back and return to ‘normal’ that is regular old gang fighting deadbeat goons in this case
