Continuing on our challenge to ourselves to boost our listening skills, the November challenge is ready for signups! Set whatever number of hours feels like a reasonable goal for you and feel free to share the things you’re listening to, your successes and setbacks. We’re in this together
All languages welcome!
This post will be a wiki so you can add and update your own hours.
Decided to aim for 60 hours across the month since I’ve no holidays in November so 15h a week minimum. I can manage that between my 3 days off each week so it should be doable.
Anything over and above that shall be a bonus. I may try some read alongs for November to try to move away from mostly anime (since I know there is a lot more down time in anime than in an audiobook).
Me and my new-found will to watch K-dramas are back on the listening train.
No goals for now (I mean I always have goals… But if I don’t say them out loud I won’t feel pressured… right??)
I’ll set up the calendar later for easy tracking. No I won’t, I’ll just log as I go.
For the JP listeners: A friend told me about https://www.4989americanlife.com/ earlier - a Japanese woman who moved to California, and does this podcast talking about all sorts of stuff. She speaks very clearly, at a normal pace, and has free transcripts for the episodes on her website.
One week into November:
I haven’t been home most of the month so far, but I just watched an episode of 은중과 상연 Limited Series | L30?? so that’s 62 minutes for now.
I’m almost caught up, having skipped listening the first three days of this month. I don’t think I’ll have the extra hour today, but I should be able to find it this weekend.
I’ll need to pause the listening challenges. Right now my mind is over-stimulated and cannot really concentrate while listening I hope this get’s better. I’m also trying to collect some YT channels that sound interesting that I can start with then
In my defence I kinda binged both seasons of 薬屋のひとりごと in the space of 2 days to help boost my mood (just over 9 and a half hours each - last week wasn’t a good one but this helps). Wouldn’t be surprised if I do the same with Solo Leveling since I’m currently on episode 6 and it’s after midnight here already, yet I’m up at 7am
Ah, ok. Yeah. I thought so too till it popped up on my recommended list on Netflix . The game is a little different from the usual farming sims but I enjoyed what I’ve played of it. I’m unsure if the series was a little rushed though as it seemed to change from an innocent farming experience very quickly and there were only 13 episodes.
So far up to 24.7 hours, which has almost entirely been the 108 eps of スカーレット S1 that I’ve finished (43 left). I have a variety of youtube or podcast tracks that I half-finished - but it’s annoying to get the times for those (or adjust them afterwards), so they’re not counted. Anyway, my silly brain is frustrated I haven’t gotten to 60 hrs yet - which would have required 6.6 hrs of listening every day… but I’m decently on track to hitting that goal.
Been lucky to stumble across so many new channels or podcasts in Kansai-ben lately… it’s really helpful hearing different people speak, since everyone talks just a bit differently. Dramas and anime are great for learning the dialect in general - especially when they have subs - but (almost) everything is so clear and consistent in them, compared to people actually talking IRL. Otoh, some of the people actually sound similar to the people in the shows… so it’s cool seeing “yeah, this isn’t just a TV thing”. I’m looking forward to being done w/ スカーレット though, since it’s consuming so much time.
Anyway, at my present rate I might not hit my 100 hr stretch goal, but that’s fine. Decided I’m gonna stop breaking up the YouTube and podcast sections in my progress tracking… there’s just too many different sources at this point, so I’d rather keep it simple
I started watching 나빌레라 S1 | L27?? in the hope of crossing the “book and adaptation” prompt off my bingo. Episode 1 wasn’t too bad, but I did have to switch to English subtitles occasionally.
127 minutes so far.
