I gave 【方言】双子の福岡弁・博多弁講座!!勝手に福岡PR#1 a partial watch, and while I’m up way past my bedtime, my main takeaway was “intonation is same as standard”, and “patterns are similar to Kansai, but with some differences”. The intonation surprised me. The patterns were either “oh that sounds familiar” or “that’s kinda different”
When ガールズバンドクライ was airing, if I’d been able to find more 熊本弁 resources, there’s a decent chance I would have started learning that… but it was pretty hard to find anything useful. I honestly find some of it really inomprehensible tho… like the flashback at the beginning of ep 13, I can only get about 70% of it, if I’m audio-only (and I’ve watched the show - and that ep… a lot). The intonation there is pretty interesting too
I’m doing very, very, very well this month compared to the middle of the year. 17 hours already, so it looks like I might be in a good spot to go for a stretch goal for the first time in forever. Granted, we’ll see what happens when I finish Skip Beat! S1 | L28??, as that’s been my primary splurge motivator…
I’m not going to lie, the thought occurred to me. I loooove the series, but the show is a bit above my level, so I’m not getting near as much as I’d prefer, (I can’t find subs for it, either. ) so maybe a rewatch is in order… We’ll have to see; I have a feeling I’m going to go run off and binge the English manga as soon as I’m done with this. (I’m up to 7 episodes watched today… I never thought it was possible for me…)
I didn’t listen to anything except music on 13/10 which I’m not counting but today I chanced upon 地球外少年少女 (Orbital Children). I actually quite enjoyed it and was surprised at how much I understood. Will definitely give it a re watch at some point once I’ve improved again.
Restarted ダンジョン飯 today and watched the first 3 episodes. Definitely picking up a lot more this time around (glad it’s got Jp Subs though for the words I’m unsure of).
Watched ダンジョン飯 episodes 4 & 5 today, will get a better chance to watch more after work tomorrow.
16/10 - Episodes 4 & 5 - 54m
Running total - 44h 52m
Edited to add 17/10 session:
More ダンジョン飯 episodes
17/10 - episodes 6-8 - 1h 18m
Running total - 46h 10m
I’m off next week so will have plenty of time to add additional listening sessions in alongside more reading sessions so might add a few audiobooks into the mix too.
I’m officially past my goal - 76/60 hrs. I’m pretty sure this is the highest amount of listening I’ve ever done in a month!
My biggest sources have been live action or conversation vids - and that’s a bit of a change, from back when it used to be all anime! Kansai-ben finally cracked my “I don’t do JP live action” egg. Anyway at this point (a bit over 100 hrs of listening later), I’d say I understand Osaka-ben just as well as standard, as long as it’s not a thicker accent (and even those are improving). So that’s exciting
I had a lot of days where I wasn’t able to work, and also off social media (it’s amazing what that will do for you), and started staying up late (still haven’t fixed that lol)
Thx I’m not gonna aim for anything at this point, but would be surprised if I don’t get past 100, since that’s basically 2 hrs per day, for the rest of the month. Depends if I get into more of a reading mood or not
19/10 - watched 5 episodes of Vampire in the Garden - 2h 12m
It may have just been my misunderstanding but I got the feeling there was age gap stuff in this (the main Human is a 14 year old, though why she’s out with a gun hunting Vampires, I’m a little unsure of). Otherwise it was so so, a little sad considering the story and flashbacks etc but I’ll probably give it a second watch further down the line (or just watch in English to see if I was right about the relationship side of things).
If you don’t mind age gap stuff if there is no physical relationship shown then as a short anime it was decent enough. Netflix said the voice over was originally JP and with my understanding the dialogue was natural enough.
I was only really understanding about 60% or so of the dialogue though, so someone with better listening skills might think differently.
I will give it another watch further down the line once my listening is better.

I’ve officially completed my top stretch goal for this month, and early to boot! I’ve been doing a bit extra this week (2 hours/day instead of my usual 1) as I’ll be traveling this weekend and didn’t want to worry about listening. Granted, Saturday and Sunday are a new month, but that’ll have to be November eefara’s problem to deal with.
With only 2 days to go until the end of the month, there is no way I’ll reach my goal. More accurately, there is a crazy way to do it nonetheless but I am not crazy enough about this challenge to do it.
Total: 11h10min
I haven’t been feeling motivated to particularly improve my Japanese beyond ensuring a maintenance level so I’ll have to live with the disappointment of some shabby 11 hours of hakata-ben this month.
