Continuing on our challenge to ourselves to boost our listening skills, the October challenge is ready for signups! Set whatever number of hours feels like a reasonable goal for you and feel free to share the things you’re listening to, your successes and setbacks. We’re in this together
All languages welcome!
This post will be a wiki so you can add and update your own hours.
Well, closed off first 3 days of October with 9.5 hrs of listening so far. Vast majority is Vtubers, followed by what’s basically a “2 people having conversation” podcast (but on YouTube). I had a lot of trouble understanding the 2nd speaker initially, but am totally used to him now. They talk about different language or cultural things related to Osaka/Osaka-ben. The Vtubers are anywhere from 1-3 people at a time, though they speak in 丁寧語 a lot of the time, so it’s not quite as useful as the audiobooks or anime, or the aforementioned podcast. While they don’t have synthesized voices, some of them do speak in weird voices, as part of their persona - so it’s not necessarily as useful in that sense.
A lot of this is very “in the background, while I work or do various things” sorta thing, but I still feel like I’m getting a lot out of it. I couldn’t really do that with an audiobook though, but audio from anime episodes (at least ラブ★コン), or people chatting seems to be fine these days. I’m really glad I’ve found so many things to listen to. Earlier on, I felt like that was pretty hard, but even with just a Vtuber or two, there’s like months worth of content
It is the start of a new academic year here so I’ve had the opportunity to meet new exchange students from Japan, including a few from Fukuoka! Unfortunately, to my horror, I’ve come to realize that my little knowledge of Hakata-ben has been covered by rust since the last time I focused on Hakata-ben in July of this year. I couldn’t conjugate my verbs properly and kept saying から instead of けん by habit . At least, I still remembered how to do the famous Hakata-ben tongue twister, so that was a nice party trick.
I don’t know if I’ll cross roads with the 福岡出身 exchange students again but in case it happens, I want to be more prepared so I decided to pick it up again.
I don’t want to be as intense as last time so I’ll set a goal of 24h and a stretch goal of 48h for this month.
I can already log 1h09 because I listened to 博多っ子のバス待ちラジオ on the train towards the Japanese curry party — I predicted that I may need to dust off my 博多弁 skills that night.
I decided to join in this month since I’m listening to a lot of Demon Slayer atm and will be moving onto something else after this.
Done 11h 11m so far the last few days so gave myself a goal of 45hrs for the month, just over 11hrs per week should be do-able at this rate. Not counting my audio Flashcards for this though.
Edited to log times per day:
Times up to and including 04/10
Minutes… There’s only ~730 hrs in a month in the first place. is there a clearer way to write the table header? Edit: I guess 分間. I changed it now, to be less confusing
Finished season 5 Hashira training arc (but now found out infinity castle is not in any local cinema’s so will need to wait until it’s released on DVD/ Netflix - need to find an alternative thing to watch now )
Thanks. My intent was to binge the whole thing then go back to the cinema to watch the film subbed but I think I missed my chance since it’s no longer showing at the local cinema. I’m going to see if it’s still in one of the bigger cities for next week though.
I’ve finished all the episodes so now on to reading the manga before maybe switching over to the light novels I have.
Think I’ll start One Piece live action from tomorrow but there’s only 8 episodes on Netflix atm.
I booked an italki lesson with the intent of practicing my hakata-ben but I got carried away with explaining all that’s happened during the last weeks and I totally failed to meaningfully practice what I initially wanted… Since I become very talkative when I get started on something in Japanese, I was doing 60-70% of the talking, maybe more, so I can’t even pretend that I listened to my teacher speaking in hakata-ben for a hour or so.
Watched the first episode of One Piece Live action. Not sure how I feel about it because of the changes compared to what was in the first volume of the manga. It feels a little rushed, like they tried to cram everything from one volume into one episode (which they kind of did). I’ll watch another tomorrow but I’m not sure if it might be better in English (doesn’t help the subs don’t match the language used either).
09/10 - One piece live action Episode 2 - 57m
10/10 - One piece live action episode 3 - 1h
Total so far: 34h 46m
I’m still a little unsure about the Live Action one because of the changes but it’s kinda growing on me. I think I will actually end up picking up more of the manga eventually but will hold off for the moment. Might end up seeing if I can get some of the earlier episodes of the anime at some point but I’ll continue with this for now.
I love the voices and manner of speech of 一般主婦 so much. She is capable of putting on so many different voices and her 博多弁 is so perfectly buttery-smooth. It is the perfect amount: not too much, not too little. By far, my favorite Japanese YouTuber. Watching her videos after a long time reminded me how much I love the way 博多弁 sounds. Truly a pity that it doesn’t have the same glamor as 関西弁.
I am also noticing an improvement in my comprehension of the 博多っ子 podcast. Doing a very low effort task at the same time as listening to the podcast has become feasible. That podcast used to require my full undivided attention and frequent rewinds.
I’m at 28.5 / 60 hours… so that’s about right on track. There’s some unrecorded time still (shadowing, game stream I’m waiting till I’m done with the vid), and various things that aren’t easy to record… but that’s the gyst
I’m happy to say I have a pretty decent variety of input. My biggest category is just people having conversations with each other (vtubers or the 大阪おっちゃん+源さん stuff) - that accounts for almost 17 hours. My next biggest being a live-action show that’s set in historical Osaka, and fully Kansai-ben (afaict genuine & accurate). I’m really loving that show, and especially the fact that it’s not a comedy… I love the comedy-type shows too, but it’s nice to have something a bit more "here’s how people actually speak in their daily lives (which yes does sometimes involve ツッコミ).
I have lessons with 5 different teachers in the next 2 weeks. 4 of them are just plain conversation. One lesson is half translation (standard material into Kansai), and half conversation. Idk that I’ll continue with all 5 teachers going forward… we’ll see. If I do, it will have to be every other week or something with most of them.
