Ah, they must have fixed this missing feature in their system – I ran into it a few years ago when they first rolled out the ability to pay the fees up front.
Edit: yes, the help page section on “Purchase of Products Subject to Reduced Tax Rates” now says they apply the reduced rates to the applicable items, rather than saying they aren’t able to do that.
I contacted Surugaya, and apparently one of the items I ordered may be out of stock. Even though it’s still listed as in stock on the site… That’s why my order hasn’t shipped yet. They were like, “don’t worry, if we can’t find it we’ll ship the rest of your order without it”, which normally would be a huge problem, but in this case the item that they can’t find is still in print, so I could buy just that one volume new. Having a mismatched set is kind of gross, but this manga is on the more expensive side, so probably still worth getting the rest at the cheaper price. Not that I necessarily have a choice. They didn’t indicate that I have an option to modify the order.
So I’ve done some inventory counting and learned I have over 200 Japanese books from what I mailed home for moving back to the U.S. (Holy crap, might have to post pictures later lmfao).
Since I’m so frustrated with what counts as popular books in the West right now, I’m going to continue collecting more Japanese books moving forward.
Since this will be my first time trying to buy them from abroad (USA), what are your favorite sites for getting them?
cdjapan.co.jp/ - excellent packaging, good selection, good proxy service for Mercari, Yahoo, Rakuten, etc if you need. Also does the points thing - tho it’s not exactly a large amount
I echo 暁のルナ. Unless you want to go down the route of buying secondhand via proxy (which CDJapan will actually do for you), Suruga-ya and CDJapan are great options.
Can someone please explain Suruga-ya? It seems to be very popular on here, I usually get my stuff from eBay and Amazon Japan so my question is does Suruga-ya even have a lot of manga and LN full sets that they ship internationally? Because it seems like most of the stuff they have on the Japanese site, they don’t sell on the international one. And if they do is there any full set category or something?
Suruga-ya is a Japanese secondhand chain, and as you mentioned it has an international site and a domestic (Japanese) one. The Japanese site has better stock, but you do need a proxy for it, while the international site will deliver to these areas (and thus would not require a proxy for them).
Both Surugaya sites stock manga/LN; I know from experience the Japanese site has what feels like everything, and will sell full sets (depending on stock, of course). I can’t say for the international site as I don’t use it as often, and I don’t believe there’s a “full set” filter on either site, sadly.
Bonus - a few used English books I got for Christmas related to Japan (mostly film, since I’m going through a film phase…but one about the history of publishing in Japan too!)
I read 夏子の冒険 and 仮面の告白 from him during the fall and am becoming a fan!
I think the image on the cover is a sketch of St. Sebastian. He was a significant figure to Mishima for a few reasons related to sexuality and there was a part in 仮面の告白 about him.
Omg wait, I got those at a used book sale and they were bundled together so I thought it’d be both volumes and didn’t check is this how I find out I bought the same book twice.
Got the manga I ordered from Surugaya. Missing volume 3 of オハナホロホロ | L24 since they couldn’t find it after I already ordered. Thankfully it’s still in print so I’ll just buy a new copy of the missing volume. All the manga are in good shape and don’t even have any discoloration from age. Two obi were destroyed unfortunately.
No I’ve read volumes 1-2 in English a few years ago and really wanted to read the whole series so when I first started using Learn Natively I checked the series’ difficulty.
I guess whether I’ll buy it or not depends on the story and what I think after finishing the main series. I usually don’t care about spin offs or extra stories
On a side note does anyone know any good sites to buy used Japanese LNs? There are some series I’d love to get that are not available anymore on Amazon and also no one sells them on eBay.
