[Poll] Korean Book Clubs

Quoting my original poll here since quite a bit of convo happened since.

I’ll be there! Been wanting to reread volume 1 of that but in Korean so this is perfect timing for me! Looking forward to joining in!

-I just bought a copy of 책벌레의 하극상 제1부 and I’ll give it a try! I don’t speak any Japanese and somehow I couldn’t find the link to the book club.

-Wait, 이상한 과가 가게 has audio books? Ooh where are they sold?

-Wait, there’s going to be a video game of 이상한 과가 가게?? Ooh when?

(I haven’t actually read a lot of books in Korean, but I’ve read three and a half of the 이상한 과가 가게 series. Honestly it’s such a struggle to find books of the right difficulty level. These are just about right, as long as I make good friends with the dictionary. They’re fun too!)

\o/ Woo-hoo!

Hasn’t been created yet! I’ll set it up once the current LN is done! I’ll tag all my Korean friends here just in case, too.

Looks like a good thing for @bibliothecary to add to the book page. :eyes: Just since they seem to know.

Probably’ll be Japanese-only for now, but you never know! Might be worth keeping an eye on it!

Storytel is a subscription service, I wrote a mini review of it here. :slightly_smiling_face:

Ah thanks! I remember seeing that post but I couldn’t use Storytel from where I live.

That’s unfortunate. :slightly_frowning_face:

A quick search shows they are available on other sites, but accessing them may be more difficult - I haven’t tried these myself, but usually Korean sites need ID verification and there’s the possibility they don’t accept foreign cards, there are regional restrictions, etc.

Cool, thanks for checking! Right now the thought of having to try to verify ID is a little intimidating, but maybe in the future when my skills are higher.

Hi everyone!
I know we have the book club for 책벌레의 하극상 going on, but I am interested in starting another book club for Korean for intermediate and advanced learners that would kick off in mid October or in November. However, I don’t know what genre most people here would be interested in (or if there is a big appetite for another book club at all), so I’ve made a poll!

If you would be interested, feel free to vote on the poll below and I can look at setting up an organizational thread and getting things started.

  • General adult fiction
  • Young adult fiction
  • Non-fiction
  • Mystery/Thriller
  • Other

FYI @bungakushoujo polls are usually best done if you enable the ‘show voters’ option hidden under the gear icon when creating a poll.

Idk why Discourse doesn’t allow that to be enabled by default, gah.

Anyway, I will attempt to read whatever genre you choose, but I voted purely with my heart :man_detective:

I have found the book club very motivating, so I heartily approve this endeavor!

Oh dear, thanks! I’m still a bit of a newbie and I’m not sure how to go back and edit it in! At least we can still see the overall results.

We would love to have you!

I don’t think you can change polls once they’ve started, you can only close/delete… :face_exhaling:

Anyway, I’ve added a link to the poll in the first post.

I appreciate that!

Let’s see what results come back over the next week and then organization can begin!

You can within five minutes of the poll’s creation, which granted still isn’t a whole lot of time.

Looks like we have a three way tie for general adult fiction, young adult fiction and mystery/thriller….:eyes: any other voters out there?

It’s not looking like we are going to get any more tie-breaking votes, so how do people feel about a general fiction/novel reading book club where broad suggestions from different genres are accepted as long as they’re still fiction and full length books? @brandon @bibliothecary

Sounds good to me!

Great! We had one more voter (maybe it was you, @pieonakr?) but I’m not sure who since I set up the poll incorrectly! :woman_facepalming:t2: I’ll look at getting a home thread set up before the weekend so we can get started and make suggestions for the first book!
