Seeking Recommendations Thread | Korean

I just realized that while there’s a great thread like this over in the Japanese section, we don’t have one here! Or at least not one that’s not exclusively for Webtoons.

Considering one of this year’s bingo prompts pertains specifically to seeking a rec, this seems like a necessity! And a great way to find new books to read as well :eyes:.

This is a place to find new books to read, come to when you’re torn between a few books for you next read, etc.

I’ll go first. Any YA novel recs? I love a mystery element (I’ve really enjoyed 세계를 건너 너에게 갈게 | L22, 죽이고 싶은 아이 | L26 and 보라색 치마를 입은 여자 | L27), but I’d say I’m really open to anything, unless it’s too romance focused.

I should be fine with anything under L30 (although I’m looking forward to being able to read harder novels soon :eyes:).

I haven’t read it myself, but I know many readers enjoyed 당연하게도 나는 너를 | L24, so that may be an option? It’s by the same author as 죽이고 싶은 아이 | L26, so the difficulty is most likely comparable! :slightly_smiling_face:

strongly rec 소리를 삼킨 소년 the writing is pretty straightforward and the story revolves around a kid who witnesses a crime and then does his own investigation to find the perpetraitor.
울고 싶은 나는 고양이 가면을 쓴다 also easy and has a bit of an adventure element to it towards the end. not a mystery per se but the main character turns into a cat and has to figure out how to turn back.

There is also an animated Netflix movie of this that is quite cute! :cat2:

Definitely something I’ve been eyeing! I’ve actually just ordered it, just waiting for it to come from Korea now, since I couldn’t find a retailer in Europe that sold it directly. It’ll probably take a few months to get here.

Ohhh interesting! I’ve been wanting to read it as well since I saw it floating around on Natively. Probably gonna read it soon then, with the ebook and audiobook since it’s on Storytel.

I hadn’t heard of that one, but thanks for the rec, I’ll check it out!

이상한 과자 가게 전천당 1 | L22 is a great one. You’ll probably struggle a little bit with the vocab, but the grammar is on the easier side, so that should compensate the difficulty, make it approachable for you. The book revolves around a mysterious snack shop, where the snacks have special magical properties. Each chapter is focused on a different customer, and the author is great at taking them into unexpected directions

I already tried reading it in Japanese. It doesn’t really interest me that much.

Hello friends!! I need a rec read so I can work on my bingo lolol :tada:

Anyone have a recommendation for me? I really like thrillers, horror, fantasy elements, and emotional books lol. Think Stephen King, Octavia Butler…for Korean books I’ve been enjoying 게이고 히가시노 thrillers and 김동식‘s short story collections. So something along those lines? But I’m really open to trying anything if it’s something you really enjoyed hehe.

I prefer action/plot stuff happening rather than character study/character growth focused books.

Not too worried about something being too difficult/easy so no worries about that ^^

보이드 씨의 기묘한 저택 | L29 for a gothic horror/fantasy rec. i really enjoyed it but word of warning - it’s probably not for the squeamish!

Late and I know we’ve talked on discord but I recommend 십각관의 살인 or 동트기 힘든 긴 밤. First one makes obvious homage to And Then There Were None, and once the bodies start dropping about 30% in, it has a really claustrophobic atmosphere that made me turn each page with trepidation. Second is billed as one of China’s best mysteries (that’s why I read it) and I would call it more suspense / a story of shocking and deep-rooted corruption, but it was very readable and I really like the title.
As an out-there recommendation that may challenge you: 파견자들. It challenged me lol. It’s sci-fi, but to me there were horror and mystery elements. A bit of indirect body horror and a mystery related to the secrets of the outside world (humanity has moved underground).

Lolol my Kimchi comp is pretty dismal on these titles but perhaps I’ll be able to read them before the end of 2025. 파견자들 sounds especially interesting, but of course it has to be the challenging one  but maybe nice goal posts to have level wise

That one starts out pretty low comp, but if you learn the genre/book words as you go through it, the comp goes up significantly. I don’t know if 범람체 is a word but that one must show up hundreds of times. Same with 그물망. And 파견자 of course. I just checked and I think my comp was around 95% at the start, maybe even a little lower, and right now it’s 97.6%.

Posting again in the right thread!

Hi everyone !

Looking for a recommendation for a korean book here in an effort to complete at least one line in my bingo card this year

Preferably something not tooo long and not too difficult, but mostly looking for a page turner. 잘 부탁드립니다 !

I see you don’t have 이상한 그림 on your natively. That is a super page turner. 고백 (Japanese book) is also a page turner. 므레모사 is very short, like less than 200 pages, and the beginning is kind of a snore but well that’s true of most books.

Awesome !!! Thanks :purple_heart: I will probably go for 이상한 그림, but I see that 므레모사 is from 김초엽, so I might also go for it if I feel like reading on from the same author after 양면의 조개껍데기 (and if I’m really short on time).

What should you suggest for some actions Novels/webtoons?

In order of personal preference, my top 5 action fantasy webtoons:

플레이어가 과거를 숨김 is my favorite action fantasy webtoon. It’s hilarious and has interesting world building and great art (trust me, just read one chapter and you’ll get a good sense of the vibe)

화산귀환 my life, my love, the best murim action comedy webtoon hands down imo

SSS급 죽어야 사는 헌터 has fantastic art and combines towers and dimension jumping and works super well once you read the first few chapters and get used to it

별을 품은 소드마스터 also has great art and an interesting original fantasy plot

빌런투킬 is quite fun if you enjoy dark superhero/supervillain type stories
