Spanish Beta - Feedback from Spanish Users & CEFR Update!

No worries! I figured you’d be slammed. No better way to test new code than to toss it into a language forum desperate to add their favorite books, haha.

The cover for season 1 of this series is messed up, it shows up in French. The cover for the whole series though is the Spanish one. (This is a Spanish Tv series.)

Interesting bug: when I hover over the authors for this book in the search, I see a duplicate:

I’m having difficulty getting a screenshot while maintaining the hover text, so here it is in the Inspect tool.

But when I go to the book’s actual page and look at the author, it’s normal:

Unfortunately this just seems to be an issue with TMDB. The default image for the current season seems to be the French version. If we can’t find a language specific cover for something, we just go with the default cover. If you want to update TMDB and then let me know, I can then sync

So that’s not really a bug, just bad data. Since we’ve had so many duplicates in the data, I also check on the frontend (i.e. browser code not server code) if there are duplicates and only show you de-duped authors.

I guess I don’t do that for the ‘title’ attribute you see, but in anything shown, it’s working as intended.

Ok, @HopeWaterfall, @eefara and others… I’ve fixed up a lot of data issues with regards to duplicates, bad series titles and what not… so the Spanish side should be looking pretty good to go! Let me know if you still hit issues.

Will be doing a reddit announcement soon I think

Small bug: these books are not collapsing into a series in my library:

(Link to the series: Tales of Symphonia (series) | L24??)

First to say, thanks so much for adding Spanish! It’s still hard to believe the pace at which this website keeps developing. Thanks for doing such a great job!

A lot of the new content that pulls through seems to have unnecessary content that pulls through in brackets after the title. Sometimes it’s the name of the publishing company, sometimes a comment like “best seller”, sometimes something else. It’s not a problem as such, but it doesn’t look very clean - maybe it’s just me! Presumably it’s a reflection of how the data looks on Amazon - sometimes I can see the same information on Amazon in brackets under the book title.

Here’s a few examples where the info that pulled through in brackets seems unnecessary and messy compared what I see on the Japanese site:

Summary

Matilda (SERIE AZUL(+12)) | L22??

Donde los árboles cantan (Especiales Laura Gallego) | L30??

El cuco de cristal (Best Seller) | L30??

Invisible (Nube de Tinta) | L22??

La Colmena: 13 (Clásicos Hispánicos) - 9788431666781 | L30??

Ugh, I know . I went ahead and cleaned those items you mentioned.

Unfortunately there’s a combo of things happening:

  • With the new autoupload feature, we are proactively manually cleaning the titles less. We’re relying on user feedback more.
  • As we manually clean more titles, we save what we’ve cleaned and apply that ‘cleaning’ for future additions. That means that new japanese books will be auto cleaned a lot better than new spanish & german books. However, as we manually clean more, newer titles will be better. Eg: those ‘(Best Seller)’ or ‘(Clasicos Hispanicos)’ will be auto cleaned in the future now.

If you find bad titles, just send a feedback report and we’ll take care of it!

Despite being a native Spanish speaker, I’ve only read one Spanish novel in my life  (Cien años de soledad) Hopefully, as I come across some interesting works, I can contribute to Natively!

Any of our Spanish learners willing to make a custom list or two? Would be a big help getting the ball rolling on the Spanish lists

I made a list of teen telenovelas! If anyone has other suggestions, feel free to add them

It might be neat to make a list of good first novels to read, for people who are wanting to try diving into reading their first novel in Spanish? Though I only have a few to recommend, and I don’t currently see a way to set lists so that others can add to them…

You actually can! However, you can only do specified ‘collaborators’, not an open wiki. Simply create the list and then check ‘add collaborators’ on the edit list page, and search by user name.

So I say you go ahead and create yours and just say in the description to ping you if you want to become a collaborator

To make this a bit easier, if anyone would like to add to it (please ), just like this post, and I will add you as a collaborator!

So, there’s been a slight update.

I’ve changed the CEFR level mapping - I set ‘A0’ as the bottom level range and pushed up all the other ones. So the new mapping is:

A0 : 0-5
A1 : 6-12
A2 : 13-19
B1 : 20-26
B2 : 27-33
C1 : 34-40
C2 : 41+

Why? Well, I want to keep Harry Potter vol 1 around lvl 29… so that the Japanese and other grading systems are somewhat close (Japanese has harry potter around lvl 29… actually lvl 31 currently, but it fluctuates).

This does mean, however, that all the books submitted at an initial level will now be wrong if you did it by CEFR lvl approximation. However, this isn’t a terribly big issue.

What’s next for the grading system? See Come help the grading system! Request for Benchmark Books~

I tried starting a Spanish study log, but discovered that you can’t use the learning-log tag on threads in the Spanish subforum :smiling_face_with_tear:.

Also, I did not realize the post character limit was so much shorter here than it is on the WaniKani forum… This is probably not a problem for normal human beings, but for wordy people like me…

These limits were simply set at the defaults - fixed! I upped the character limit to 70,000.

FWIW, I think you’re the first one to encounter it, quite the essay you wrote! :joy:

Please, we’d love a spanish learner’s log!

Thank you! It’s much appreciated!

My WaniKani level 60 post actually broke the WK post limit (I had to split it into two posts :smiling_face_with_tear:), so my Spanish study log is honestly nothing in comparison :joy_cat:!

Most of the reason why it’s so long is I tried to make up for lost time by going back through my Japanese study log and picking out all the most relevant bits concerning my progress with Spanish, so it’s sort of 3+ years of study condensed down into one post… I figure most people won’t want to read all that, but I wanted it there just as a record, haha.

Hopefully at least one person will get something out of my experiences/recommendations!
