Summer Audiothon 👂 😎 [July 2026]

Are you staying home for the summer? Stuck on a beach with nowhere to go? Maybe you’re in the Southern Hemisphere enjoying a cosy winter?

Whatever your plans are for the month of July, CANCEL THEM Natively is here to add two more events to your agenda: a Readathon (July 10th to 13th), and an Audiothon (July 24th to 27th).

This page will be hosting our 2nd Audiothon :clinking_glasses:
See here for the Readathon: Summer Readathon 📚 ✨ [Voting on next edition]

I have been informed that July is anime season, so if you’re looking for an excuse to binge-watch new seasons, now is the time :television: And if you’re not into anime, Natively has just expanded its language catalogue anyway, so go wild and watch / listen to anything you can get your hands on, during a 24-hour listening marathon (side-note: you don’t have to listen to things exclusively in languages supported by Natively).

:check_mark: Rules of the Audiothon

  • The timeframe is 24 consecutive hours (see below to choose the day that works best for you)
  • Listen to any of your target language(s): the challenge is to improve our listening skills, so as long as you’re not counting your native tongue, feel free to include any other language! If you are learning several languages, count any listening you do in them during the Audiothon.
  • Listening can be: listening to raw audio or with accompanying text.
    • Audio in target language (TL), without subtitles :+1:
    • Audio in TL, with TL subtitles :+1:
    • Audio in TL, with TL and native language (NL) subs :+1:
    • Audio in TL, with NL subs only: I’ll leave it to your discretion, as long as you’re trying to understand the audio I feel like it’s within the spirit!
  • That’s it, really. You don’t have to post updates in this thread or to let us know your results, but it would be greatly appreciated if you did!

:spiral_calendar: When?

Everyone is busy, especially in this month, so the Audiothon will run, like last time, from Friday to Monday. For this edition, pick a 24-hour window from Friday 24th to Monday 27th of July, and spend as much time listening as you can!

:trophy: Goals

The only real goal is to spend time listening in your target language.
Of course, you can set your own individual goals: an amount of time, a number of episodes, finishing an on-going show, watching your first comprehensible input video…

:pencil: Tracking

The Readathon is a bit more flexible with tracking, but I feel like for Audio it has to be minutes, right? If there is anything else you think might be tracked instead do let me know, but for now all I can think of is time, so: track your time!

:busts_in_silhouette: Community event

On top of improving our listening, it is also fun to do so with other people.

This is where this thread comes in handy: once you have picked the 24h you will be doing the audiothon in, let us know here you are participating so we can cheer you on! You can also let us know your goals or plans beforehand, and post updates during your Audiothon. When you’re done, post your results to let us know how you did: how long did you manage? What did you listen to?Did you break any milestone of yours? (First time listening without text, first time listening with text, first time doing any listening at all…)

:baby: Audiothon newbie?

Don’t overthink it! We are just listening to our TL together for a few days, there are no stakes here. You’re busy and can only do 15 minutes? New to listening and you don’t think you can manage more than 5 minutes? IT’S AN HONOUR TO HAVE YOU.

Have a look at our first 📻 Mid-Year Audiothon 🌼 [FINISHED] to get an idea of how the event went, and check out this thread for some tips (they are for the Readathon, but most of them still apply): Readathon Strategies and Tips

I hate to end this post as an email, but if you have any questions do let us know! :sparkles:

I’ll give this a shot, although my JP listening is an atrophied muscle.
I have the audiobooks for 銭天堂 and read the first 3 or so a while back so I might try listening to Vol 1 (exited for ghost icecream again) as it’d be easier than 本好き (although I did do Vol 1 a while back shortly after reading it in JP and it was alright).

Not me using this as an excuse to buy more BLCD :face_in_clouds:

I think I’ll try joining this one! No lofty goals, but I’ll do my best. The timing is actually perfect for me.

24 hours of letting my eyes rest! Sleep mask and headphones!

I’ve been waiting for this! :heart_on_fire:

Expected start time

July 24, Friday, EMEA morning.

Plans

Assuming the book doesn’t end on a cliffhanger that’d make me start the next volume, the plan is:

:japan: 月の影 影の海 (上) 十二国記 1 | L36 - Audible says it’s 7 hour and 36 minutes (assuming I don’t go 1.5x)

and then pad my free time with a podcast

:israel: “ההסכת שאין לומר את שמו” (The Podcast Who Must Not Be Named). My Hebrew is absolutely not at Harry Potter reading levels, but I can listen to a podcast where they discuss a couple of chapters at a time

Language Type Name Time
From the middle of ep 20 to the end of ep 23
02:06:33
Total 11:04:32 + 02:06:33

13:11:05

Speeding up audiobook felt a bit rude to the voice actors, I’ll have to think more about what’s important for me.

3 volumes of NO. 6 〔ナンバーシックス〕 | L31 are waiting for me, as well as 3 volumes of 四つ子ぐらし | L21. That should keep me occupied for a while. Plenty of other options as well, but those I know are easy enough for me to go audio-only.

I will join this one! My main goal during the audiothon is to improve my comprehension of Indian English. My job involves talking with people from India from time to time, but my listening skills leave a lot to be desired - I can understand the common filler words dropped during meetings in open spaces, but I struggle during actual conversations. Usually, we just end up switching to text chat.

I have few shows to listen:

  • Kalki Presents: My Indian Life by BBC News World Service (no subs) - every episode has a guest so there’s a way to get into various accents, and the presenter parafrases them,
  • News at 7 by India Today Podcasts (auto transcribed) - the main presenter is a woman I got familiar with her way of speaking, but some past episodes have male presenters I barely understand,
  • Standups by Saikiran (with subs) - the guy made the “India’s most Viral English Standup Comedy Video” and I may check more of his content once I got bored with serious stuff.

I may move forward with Japanese podcasts for beginners:

  • JapanesePod101 - Beginner Season (subs for Japanese main dialogues) - it’s mostly in English, but it’s a language course
  • Japanese Podcast for Beginners - Nihongo con Teppei (no subs)

There’s an Indian comedian I find pretty entertaining that I’ve seen on Instagram. I don’t know how hard his accent it or not but throwing it out there as another option: https://youtube.com/@shamikchakrabarti

The audiothon is this weekend, but I’m still not sure what I’m going to listen to. :downcast_face_with_sweat: I have too many options, I think, audiobooks and anime foremost among them.

Sounds like a vibes based weekend :smiling_face_with_sunglasses: I have an audiobook I picked out for the occasion but if it’s terrible I have backup shows to watch

I don’t really have time this weekend as we have friends over from Friday to Sunday, but I’m trying to get some time in Sunday evening and Monday while working.

Something has come up and idk how long it’ll take me to finish, so we’ll what day I end up doing the readathon. Either Friday through Saturday, or potentially just Sunday (which would be mostly audiobooks and podcasts because I’ll be travelling).

Some options for Youtube channels:

Deeva Jessica (Korean, true crime)

쩜 (Korean, booktube)

김노아 (Korean, gaming)

겨울서점 Winter Bookstore (Korean, booktube)

Booktosi 북토시의 일상독서 (Korean, booktube)

요즘 것들의 사생활 (Korean, podcast)

슈카월드 (Korean, video essays, documentaries)

보다 BODA (Korean, documentaries)

Japanese super immersion (Japanese, learner content)

Yuka老師的日本語教室 (Japanese, vlogs for learners)

Umberto Eco: La biblioteca del mundo (Italian, documentary)

Italiano Avanzato (Italian, podcast)

If anyone has options for podcasts in Spanish, I’d love some recs! Not learner content though.

Some options for audiobooks (all of which are on Korean Storytel):

아무것도 안 하는 녀석들

소원을 들어주는 미호네 2

Tres vidas de santos

Alpinismo bisexual y otros escritos de altura

If I end up spending the day of the readathon at home I’ll likely watch some kdramas and jdramas as well, and I’ll just pick solely based on vibes, I have lots of options already anyway.

Listing down some of my own options for future me consideration:

  • (Movie) 書道ガールズ!! わたしたちの甲子園 | L30?? (JFF Movie Club Pick)
  • (TV) Continue watching any of the six anime I started back in January
    • (Note: 字幕プレーヤー was broken for Crunchyroll last I checked, which cuts my options down to one-three shows unless I find a replacement Some kind soul forked off of the original and I got the updated version working - Jimaku Player Reloaded)
  • (Audiobook) Start a new one; all the ones I have now are too long to really consider starting and finishing in the same day, so I’d like to roughly aim for maybe getting through a third to a half on the audiothon if I do this. Potential options:
  • General JP Youtube
  • Watch something in Chinese???

A friend recently recommended Hablando en rata, and I’ve enjoyed the couple episodes I’ve tried! The hosts are a biomedic (is that how you call people working in biomedicine?) and a linguist, taking about different topics, each with a focus on their field. A good mix of Spain slang and casual chats, and domain-specific vocab.

If you’re looking for something to watch in Chinese, I recommend 双镜 (Couple of Mirrors) :eyes: . It’s censored GL but the chemistry is still great. This has hard chinese subs and soft English subs

Added to the list! Thanks! I might steal @monace’s recommendation as well; not necessarily for the readathon, but just adding to my Spanish podcast list, haha.
