No preference. Just tell me the date and I’ll join
Let’s say May 7, then? That should give me a few days to get into the swing of 本好き3 and catch up with my other book clubs.
Works for me. Are we reading this with a schedule, or just together?
I figure just together on our own time, unless you guys would prefer a schedule.
I have no preference
Are you planning to make a separate thread for it?
I figured we could chat about it here, since this has been serving as a bit of a catch-all for the listed 70s books. I can create a new one if you think it’d be useful, though.
Fine either way - just wanted to know, for my own organizational purposes
I read the first 20 or so pages last night, just to make a start on it. I wasn’t expecting it to start quite so in medias res, but I like it. (I do not like that my copy is bunkobon format, which remains as awkward and eyestrain inducing as ever.)
I should be starting soon-ish myself. I’m looking forward to seeing how it compares to 11月のギムナジウム.
I’ll start tonight then. I flipped through some of it just now - and wow I love the art style!! I definitely don’t envy reading it in 文庫本 format tho (I’m reading Amazon edition)
Is this the Kindle edition? Or some other specific format?
Kindle edition, but I’m reading it on my tablet
Overall I’m definitely enjoying so far. The language is easy, but a variety of things didn’t quite click until I checked a translation. So I think I need to read it a bit more carefully. I kind of hate having to get my bearings at the beginning of manga. Edit: 2nd chapter went much better. Slowing down was a good idea
For anyone who didn’t already know: フロイライン(〈ドイツ〉Fräulein)
未婚女性に対する敬称。令嬢。お嬢さん。姓または姓名の前に付ける
I’m a bit confused about the use of 彼氏 here… It doesn’t quite seem to mean boyfriend… But it seems like it has some implication. Bc I only remember it getting used for 2 people: Tom, and Erik
トームの心臓 - Up to pg 42
blinks I totally forgot this started with suicide… The note was pretty(?) in a tragic way - from a storytelling perspective. That 2 deaths motif is something I’ve heard mentioned a lot in JP media (usually with a “the you inside the people who knew you” sorta phrasing. I wonder if it has some sort of origin.
So if I’ve got this straight… Tom & Ante are gay, and made a bet about wooing Yuri - who either hasn’t realized he’s gay yet, or just can’t admit it to himself, cuz of comphet or w/e else… (Or legitimately just hated Thomas for some other reason? But I doubt that)
It seems like it’s going to be a pretty interesting story.
I can’t imagine having the dilemma of whether to tell someone’s parents “actually your kid committed suicide, and left a note that it was bc they were in me”… Like they probably deserve to know - but also that’s pretty scary
Idk where the author got their version of the Aqeda (Binding of Isaac), but it’s certainly not from the actual text (I’m pretty sure they just made it up)
I guess a lot of the upper class men are gay too, or like some group of them? And some of the classmates? (Is everyone gay at this school?)
I missed the フウッ in the bedroom scene, and was really confused there for a sec. (Also the Oscar’s CPR is missing a few steps). Oscar’s being a bit unrealistic with his expectations, but at the same time I guess they can’t ask the adults for help here, given the situation…
Also wow that Ante kid is thirsty… Also is he supposed to be a lot younger, or is he just tiny?
This is the poem that was on the blackboard:
Up to p81
So Erik had his mom stolen by some mane named Yuuri, and resents his mom for having sent him the an 田舎 school?
Apparently he looks just like Tom to everybody - I assumed it would just be to Yuri
And he just spilled the beans that Tom killed himself, but thankfully just to Oscar…
That threat from Oscar to not get close to Yuri… oof. And Oscar played off like he didn’t know about Tom’s death being suicide
Oscar’s the principal’s son?! Ok then
Also what’s up with Erik & his mom?
Is it bad that I kind of like Oscar? He’s an enjoyable character. Also I can’t hear that name without thinking of べるばら and I love that Oscar!
(Not sure of the context, but) didn’t 彼氏 just used to mean 彼? I’m not sure when that changed but maybe not by the 70s?
That’s probably it then. I was just confused bc sometimes they just use 彼 for the other guys iirc. I’ll have to look again tomorrow
Off-topic: Reminds me that there was a point (like till near end of 明治時代) when 少年 could refer to any gender, 乙女 was the generic word for any young girl (without the extra connotations), and 少女 wasn’t a word yet
ト-マの心臓: Is ユーリ’s full name ユリスモール? How is that supposed to be Anglicized?
Also, it’s quite interesting what the title of the work is apparently referencing, at least this early in the game.
ユリスモール is the full name. ユーリ is a nickname/shortened version. Apparently the author used Juli/Julismol as the anglicization, which in German is apparently YOO-LI (acc to translator note on first Mangadex chapter)
I’m not sure what exactly you mean by this
Ah, gotcha, thanks.
It’s referencing (page 20ish spoilers) the note トーマ left about his suicide, right? At least in part.
これがぼくの愛
これがぼくの心臓の音
きみにはわかっているはず
Yeah, tho I expect it means it in a more abstract/きっかけ sense. But yeah, not what I was expecting
