Shortly after I had established the Akutagawa Prize Reading Challenge, I discovered that there is a twin prize to the Akutagawa Prize, namely the Naoki Prize. While the Akutagawa Prize targets a new or rising author of literary fiction, the Naoki Prize recognizes “the best work of popular literature in any format by a new, rising, or (reasonably young) established author.” Both prizes were established in 1935 and are awarded twice a year.
The two prizes are viewed as “two sides of the same coin” and inseparable from one another. Because of the prestige associated with the Naoki Prize and the considerable attention the winner receives from the media, it, along with the Akutagawa Prize, is one of Japan’s most sought after literary awards of recognition.
Having said all that, I thought it would be interesting to have a challenge for the Naoki Prize winners as well. And so here it is!
To participate in the Naoki Prize Challenge, just read one or more books from the list and tick them off once you’re done 
Also, feel free to comment, review etc. on the books in this thread. I intend this thread to be solely for individual check-in and tracking, so there will be no reading clubs. Of course it is great if you want to set up a thread to read one of those books, or if you want to nominate them in the book clubs, but this is beyond the scope of this thread.

To keep the book polls short, I only included author and book title in Japanese. Please get further information about the author etc. from the English Wikipedia page or from the Japanese Wikipedia page. (These pages might also be more suitable if you want to browse the books in general or search for a specific one.)
You can also browse this list where the award-winning authors are grouped by gender (thanks to valkow for discovering the Prizesworld website!). It contains more background information like the author’s age and books they submitted in previous iterations.
Another option is this list which contains the winners of both the Akutagawa and the Naoki prizes. It gives detailed information on the length of each book, whether it contains one story or a collection of short stories, and whether the book is part of a series.
Getting the books
For many of the books listed here, the usual approach via Amazon (physical/Kindle) or Bookwalker (digital) works well.
For older books, I initially thought that they should be available for free on Aozora Bunko, but the rule in Japan is that the author must be dead for more than 70 years before the book becomes public domain. Since this is a prize for “young” authors, many of them (fortunately, I must say) do not fulfill that criterion yet…
