The Seeking Recommendations Thread 📚

I think it’s that the volumes have an extra title, and the one for the first volume is Herr Doktor Tenma. The series name looks to be just Monster.

Example, start of chapter three:

創部は汚染されているから、十二分に消毒してくれ-Die Stelle muss gründlich desinfiziert werden. Information missing

OK but more concrete.

デブルドマンは十分に-Uns bleibt nicht viel Zeit. Information missing; btw I didn’t even know the English word debridement (removal of necrotic tissue).

The translation does not change the essence, but it simplifies the text, thus silently changes the target group from adults to teenagers. Of course I‘d say, as they‘d want to earn money, and there are not that many adult manga readers in Germany, I‘d suppose.

Oh, ok. That seems still somewhat typical for translations. I was imagining the second half of every bubble missing or something.

Now, with video games for SNES they seem to have had size constraints and just thrown some of the text away. And half of the remaining they just made up because they didn’t have time to do a proper translation or didn’t know Japanese.

Just to be clear, you’re looking for textbooks?

That was the gyst - but “books written in it containing large amounts of 関西弁” recs are certainly welcome. Doubly so if they have an audiobook

Can anyone recommend something similar to 不可解なぼくのすべてを | L21? I really enjoyed the vibes from that series and would love to read another series with a large variety of LGBT characters.

Side note

You can really tell that I read a lot of stuff like this because I’ve read (or at least tried) 12 of the top 21 recommendations on AniList for manga like 不可解なぼくのすべてを | L21.

The titles on that list tho… Some of them seem… very not like the others lol. I’m only about 4-5, with a few more on my wishlist. I do kinda wanna give Koisuru vol 2 a try, one of these months

One of them is “former porn star details his life as a crossdresser” which is too much for me. :joy:

Which ones sounded different to you?

I’ve thought about it as well, but it seems like the kind of series to just meander and I wasn’t super invested in the two leads. Maybe I’ll change my mind at some point.

やが君、 ぼくらのへんたい、君の世界に恋はない、ぜんぶきみのせい all seem quite different from each other - and I’m not sure why 1 & 3 are on this list. If you wanna look at Yuu as possibly ace/demi spectrum, then I can squint and see the resemblance btwn the two at least

Yeah, sorta similar, back when I read it… The covers look super cute tho… There’s just a million other things I wanna read first. Still, it would be nice to have a 2nd BL series I actually like (トーマの心臓 | L30 being the first)

I was gonna check if you had already read しまなみ誰そ彼 1 | L25 before I saw that it was in that list (in first place, too, which makes sense). Since it seems you did not, that’s my recommendation.

My only issue with that series is that it felt way too short. I wanted more.

I guess 女装してめんどくさい事になってるネクラとヤンキーの両片想い 1 | L24 also matches the topic, although I am growing less and less happy about how the author is handling gender past volume 10. I was happy up to that point, though, so there’s that at least.

This is actually the most similar to me (of the ones I’ve read) in terms of diversity, though the tone is very different.

True true

I’m not particularly interested in the genre*, but it does feel a bit like cheating when one of the two characters is always dressing very femininely / crossdressing. Just feels like the author couldn’t make up their mind. Like I said, I might still check it out again at some point though.

*I’ve fully read two manga featuring male gay characters that I really enjoyed, but actual BL manga mostly look sketch to me. Like often it looks very aggressive and non-consensual from the covers/artwork and the character design is also generally not in an art style I like.

Thought you might recommend that! The digital quality is pretty bad unfortunately, but I’ll still add it to my list. It really does seem like the best fit.

Does it have other LGBT representation or is it just BL with crossdressing?

Most of the time is spent on the main two characters, so you don’t get much for a while, but there are some L, G, and B representation. My main problem is that the author seems to ignore that transgender people actually exist, which becomes super weird at some point considering the context.

Good to know. I think it’s on my list already

I think I’m fine with that for this series… I get what you mean tho. Anyway, I read some of the preview for vol 2, and can’t say it grabbed me

Similar impression, but there’s stuff like above or 光が死んだ夏 1 | L27 or こいものがたり 1 | L25 that clearly doesn’t match that (well I hated the character design for こいものがたり, but still)… So personally I feel like I wanna at least try some more stuff like that, to be able to say I gave it a fair chance. That’s just me tho

I remember reading BL webtoons that I really liked, but haven’t seen anything comparable in JP

I’m still out here shilling for 僕らの食卓 | L20. It’s one of the most wholesome manga I’ve read in a long time (and I’m not really a wholesome story reader..), I personally love the art (it’s a bit different from most BL), and I would just recommend it to most people, regardless of their interest or not, in the genre.

More modern series (post 2015 I’d say on average) have been a lot less uncomfortable on the issue of consent, but as a long time reader of the genre I’m less sensitive to it because that’s just how things used to work. Ymmv with newer series, but for my sensibilities, more modern stories have improved in that respect.

Already on my wishlist apparently

I’m kinda weird with this, in that sometimes I really enjoy stuff that’s terrible about consent… But I think lack of/poor consent + what feels like a rougher vibe than I’m used to, ends up turning me off… Unfortunately I can’t better articulate just what that means

Also tbh I would love BL recs that just don’t involve sex… which is a characteristic of many (most?) yuri—though I’ve read plenty with sex too

僕らの食卓 has implied sex (like one panel and then cut to next scene), but that’s it. みなと商事コインランドリー | L21 has no sex (but an age gap). Very minor consent issues but iirc they apologize afterwards. 佐々木と宮野 S1 | L23 I’ve only seen the anime so I make no promises about the manga, but the anime has no sex. I have a few drama that I’ve watched recently that have no sex, but jdramas are jdramas so you have to be comfortable with the cringe :joy:

Cool. Added to list. I’ll pass on the dramas tho. Thx tho
