Does anybody have recommendations for light novel series up to L24 with full furigana?
the only one I could find was orange, and that only has 3 volumes. not looking for childrens books.
Though I would have expected that there are no such series, Natively lists two of them (the last two seem to be children’s books, the first is a oneshot): Japanese Light Novels Difficulty List | Natively
yeah, i did that search, too
you mean that ice princess series? it looks more like a children book to me
it’s my backup plan, but id rather read something thats meant to at least for teenagers/young adults. but i guess there really isnt much out there.. ![]()
No that’s what I explicitly excluded, I meant the two before that: s ranku boukensha and orange.
ah, sorry, I must’ve been confused
it’s still either a one-shot (and im looking for a longer series than orange) or rated with questions marks, and i don’t trust those
edit: also i just tried the free trial to gauge the difficulty and it’s a manga?
i thought maybe one of you had an idea beyond that search, since a lot of light novels aren’t tagged with their furigana status. so really lokking for some hidden gem that’s not part of this search ^^
The ones that aren’t tagged have no furigana, in most cases, which of course is normal for non children’s books.
There are some series that originally were light novels and got re-published as children’s books i.e. got full furigana, like e.g. 水属性の魔法使い | L22?? I haven’t read it yet, the grading is ??, but there might be more of this type.
Which one is a manga?
S ranku boukensha of the search result, but maybe there exist two versions.
Ah, good catch (@Chimmsen as well). I submitted a request to have it re-categorized as a manga, but that might be a bit in coming.
thanks, that one looks easy enough from a first glance at the preview
will look more into it later
bookmarked for now ![]()
There actually are at least a few more. I’m currently going over all those light novels and adding the full furigana tags according to the bookwalker free trial page. not all are showing up yet, when you do the search, do tags take a while or is doing this right now maybe just a bad time ![]()
The results of the search from above increased from 5 to 9 for me, though.
Can confirm, its definitely a children’s series. I dont know how the 氷の上のプリンセスシニアス series compares, since I think its the same characters but in high school.
夜カフエ has older characters, but I dont know that I’d say it isn’t a children’s book. ![]()
Ah, you mean Chil–
Oh. Hm.
Good luck? ![]()
My completely unsolicited advice: I’d recommend either reading a good children’s book, or getting a higher-level non-furigana light novel as an ebook and e.g. reading it in ttsu reader while adding furigana with a browser extension and doing digital dictionary lookups. At least in my experience, good light novels start in the orange level range.
(Although maybe I’m just burned by the time when I was looking for lower level light novels and tried kuma³ before giving up on finding anything good in that range…
)
It’s 100% a children’s book, yeah.
I have now gone over all the light novels up to L24, where I was able to look at the bookwalker preview, and there are now a bit more options
I’ll probably go with https://learnnatively.com/series/a8045fd265/ it’s rated L22 and it got 12 volumes. perfect for a light novel per month goal ^^
For what it’s worth, I’m pretty sure that book imprint is still technically a children’s imprint. It’s for older kids (maybe late elementary/early middle school), but I’m pretty sure that was miscategorized as a light novel. Since there’s not really a set definition for what a LN is, it can be all fuzzy anyway, but I tend to look to Bookwalker when I add books:
They have it categorized as 文芸, which is kinda a catch all term for not-manga, not-LN on the site.
Not here to rain on your parade or anything, but I don’t want you to go in expecting more.
For recommendations, I’ve only read the first one of these, but I enjoyed it (as much as one can in a LN at this level). It’s a touch higher than your ask, but maybe worth trying a few books from now?
You may also want to give this a shot:
You can see from my review that I didn’t actually finish the first book, but I think it would make a really good first LN, difficulty wise.
Edit: forgot about your full furigana ask.. yeah, that’s not a thing that LNs do, unfortunately.
There are occasionally junior bunkos of LNs that will be full furigana, but outside of that, it’s not really a thing. I would second reading an easier LN in ttsu for the near instant lookups for readings.
Some other suggestions:
How about 【TOジュニア文庫】最弱テイマーはゴミ拾いの旅を始めました? The original is 最弱テイマーはゴミ拾いの旅を始めました。, which is currently L23 and has little/no furigana, but it’s written super simple as-is, so if you like the furigana version (the first link) it should hopefully be less painful moving over to the “regular” version.
(That TOジュニア文庫 imprint is going to be well worth searching, I think; their source LNs aren’t always <L25, but full furigana is nothing to sneeze at.)
Maybe check into BROTHERS CONFLICT as well, though it doesn’t 100% fit your criteria (check my review there as well for a more detailed look at the book’s formatting). Even without full furigana, it’s going to have a lot less text per page than other LNs.
If you’re willing to go up 2 levels (and I think you should at least try it because only 2 people made gradings on this book and one of them was me and I am really bad at grading lol) you should check out: サクラダリセット 上 | L26
This is originally a light novel, but it’s rewritten in easier language for kids (while still keeping the YA tone) and from what I remember has full furigana.
In general, try to check in the “where to find” section if there’s a tsubasa bunko for a full furigana version. For example, there’s a full furigana tsubasa bunko version of ビブリア古書堂の事件手帖 (1) ~栞子さんと奇妙な客人たち~ | L32 and 君の名は | L29 – they are above your requested level but at least you knows those books are out there.
But I think I would check more directly on Japanese sites as I think natively may not have as much books in here as there might be out there and your request is pretty specific.
Thanks for the heads up! The summary kinda read like it was meant for a sloghtly younger audience, but I thought “it’s got romance or something, so it must be at least for teensa ^^ looking into your other suggestions, but for now i want to stick with furigana for a bit longer. i already have my reading pile for when i finally make the jump into non-furigana work.
I really should start doing that, but I still have a very hard time navigating japanese sites
and thanks for the term “tsubasa bunko”, that might come in handy ![]()
@eefara thanks for your suggestions, too. im going to look over them
i actually had looked at the brothers conflict one, already, but the preview didnt seem to show any actual book pages, or it’s just a very unusual layout ^^
