Week 1 - 明日の世界で星は煌めく - Beginner's Light Novel Club

Never seen that before :open_mouth: Do you remember where you came across it?

In my case, that would be everyday life (although the word ママチャリ, a more specific type of bicycle, is more common, but it comes from mama + bicycle anyway). All those words are familiar, so it’s probably why it’s less common in writing.

That’s a way, but I already missed a bunch of other books that would work as well anyway

I have bilingual friends and they would call bikes チャリンココ in the Japanlish that we would speak. So not super helpful.

I have heard チャリンコ in anime before… I want to say in something like Flying Witch (but I’ve never seen the anime so not that :joy:). But an inaka slice of lifey show.

If my vibes on the word are right it’s a little outdated and kinda a childish word?

The hazards of running multiple book clubs  I’ve fixed it now. Thank you for pointing it out

教室の前まで辿り着いた私は、廊下にぽつんと置かれている机と椅子を見て、小さく呟いた。

Wow, those bullies certainly don’t miss a beat. Going strong from the very first day, huh?

具体的な悪意の証拠はどこにもない。

…ないなの?

その上、お父さんは〝魔術師〟を自称し、オカルト系の依頼を高額で引き受けて解決するという怪しい仕事をしていた。

If the dad takes so much money, why is the house in such a bad shape?

翌日にあんなことが起こるなんて思いもせずに──。

Ha, I was surprised when we seemingly went so far back after being knee deep in a postapocalyptic city in the prologue. I guess next stop: Apocalypse? Or becoming a witch? (Insert “Why not both?” meme here.)

Wow, you must’ve been in for quite a surprise with that prologue

I read on PC (looking up words via shift + mouse over in ttsu reader) and also listen on PC. When I don’t know a word, I will shift + hover it without stopping the audio. If I get it fast enough I’ll just let the audio continue, but that happens very very rarely. In most cases I’ll press the right arrow key on my keyboard to repeat the last few seconds of the audio book (which includes the word I looked up). I do the same if I feel like I didn’t properly understand a sentence until I feel like I understand it.

tl;dr: I never pause the audio, but I rewind a few seconds very very often.

Is this sentence one of those “horror short story in less than 10 words” things?

I never watched the anime or read the LN, but I think the manga is great! I’m glad to hear that it’s well adapted.

Like the dad wants it to be this way, or the author wants it to be this way?

If you mean the dad - I think “dilapidated” feels more like “ghosts live here” than “a successful sorcerer that can solve my problems lives here”, but then again, I’m not a successful sorcerer so what do I know

I did mean the dad… bc successful sorcerer can’t just live in a detached home in the suburbs, imo. That seems way more sus than ghosts live here house. And who knows, maybe the ghosts help him channel his power :joy:

I’ve started listening to the book with subtitles generated from the text, and it’s been the best experience I’ve had so far. Navigating, looking up words, and generating Anki cards feels effortless since it all happens within a single browser tab.

This tag has a major drawback. It almost always comes together with the fantasy tag and most of the time the text is far from sci-fi but just fantasy. So you have to remove it actively, which not all persons do after adding a book/TV series. And only the person who added it can easily remove a tag, as it seems.

So there maybe quite a number of books/TV series that have the sci-fi tag w/o actually being sci-fi. But despite the drawback, the tag is nonetheless the best we have to find sci-fi.
