Same here! I got this for free from amazon really early on in my Japanese learning journey and have tried to get into it a few times but always stopped throughout. Seems like this time it’s relatively smooth to work through it! (Although there’s still a lot of vocabulary that is throwing me off…)
I made myself a reader that can sync the audiobook with the epub and automatically calculates my reading speed and some other statistics. I can also go through every line and automatically create anki cards with the audio from the corresponding sentence, which is very nice. But I’ve seen there are a lot of similar projects online if someone is ever interested in a similar setup, for example I found GitHub - Manhhao/Hoshi-Reader: Japanese EPUB reader for iOS · GitHub for ios and https://app.yatsu.moe/ in the browser in combination with Using Yatsu with ttu-whispersync - Yatsu Reader Docs
I’m reading way too many books, but I decided to give just the audiobook a try and I’m at least following the plot. Although I did miss some of the details about her conditions in the future (… present?).. not sure if it’s comprehension or just that I usually listen to audiobooks when I do chores and sometimes can’t pay 100% attention while I’m doing something..
Either way I’m excited to end up reading with the club after all!
I feel like beating her servants goes beyond simply throwing a tantrum but it’s true that she was probably a result of her upbringing and Anne saw that. I agree that she technically didn’t deserve to be thrown in an awful prison and then executed instead of simply being stripped of her position but it’s hard to feel sorry for her when she was living a life of luxury while millions of others were living in far worse conditions than she ever experienced in the prison. It’s not like they deserved it either but that’s just life sometimes yknow?
Anne is honestly a much better person than me because I’m not sure I could bring myself to keep taking care of the person who abused me in the past. Like I could understand forgiving Mia (since she’s technically just a badly raised kid) but continuing to look after her for years is something else. That’s probably why I like her so much lol. True definition of a good person.
Uh oh. I fear this means I will definitely need the adult versions as well if I end up deciding to read the whole thing. I mean, just look how cute that silly bear with the crown is!!
Listening to an audiobook isn’t technically reading, so well done on finding that loophole!

Initially I was on the fence about that too (although not far enough to say that it deserves the death penality), but in the end I still called it “tantrum” because according to Anne the kicks don’t hurt at all, and headbutts are such a weird anime/manga staple that it’s probably more played for comedy here. Especially when we are explained a few sentences later that she’s not using punishments like whipping or worse because “だってそれって、痛そうだし……。”
Yeah, definitely! I wonder if there’s something else behind that, but Anne seems pretty straightforward, so I assume it’s really just that she “couldn’t leave Mia alone” like she said. Anne definitely deserves everything she’ll be getting after time was rewound
