:policeman: Law and Order :policewoman:

  • Any reveals, for the current chapters must be behind spoilers or detail curtains. When we get further in you don’t need to hide details that were revealed in previous chapters.
  • Questions on vocab, grammar, nuance, and the like are both welcome and encouraged. If you’re not sure if it’s a spoiler, assume it is and use one of the above options to hide the text.
  • You are encouraged to speculate and guess wildly
  • Be kind about other peoples’ wild guesses :sparkling_heart:
  • Even if you don’t read the chapter(s) in time, you are still encouraged to post in the thread for that reading once you have finished it. I advise not reading ahead in the threads as you may see spoilers.

To gauge participation - a poll!

Nothing has happened yet. I wonder if the pace is just slow because this book is more than twice as long as the Detective Conan novels that I usually read, or it’s the writer’s style.

I’ll continue reading this book when Week 4 starts next week. Will read other books in between.

What room did 藍子 actually go into??? Is she gonna wake up next to a corpse? Or worse - 十和田? :joy:

I’m also curious if that one character (I forgot to note down who, whoops) mixing ice into his beer will have any significance of if it was just to be like ‘oh look how quirky this person is’. I feel like it’s the former, though.

Finished! Nothing to say about this week: some parts were boring and repetitive, others were a bit more interesting, the whole set up takes way too much time.

Someone shall die in ch 2 or I’m throwing hands :hocho: The only funny thing for me was 白いコック in the very beginning. Took me by surprise at first, but then I remembered it’s not bl :joy:

I usually don’t mind slow set-ups and I also don’t have a problem with any of the scene setting or characters so far, but I somehow really can’t get into this. I read a percent or two and burn out. For a bit I was not reading a lot else than this book because I wanted to catch up, but all that did was cause me to read, well. Not much, period. So now I’m reading other stuff.

I know some other people have noted that it feels very slow in the threads. Did that change for you at some point?

As it is, I’ll probably keep concentrating on other books and eke out a couple pages here and there when I’ve the mind for it.

I might be in the minority, but I’m starting to appreciate this book (I’m deep into Week 6 schedule, though). I had trouble at first because I found most characters either insufferable or unbelievable (and sometimes both), the premise more than weird (a house shaped like an eyeball ? really ? and what’s all this pseudo-religious/philosophical mumbo-jumbo about The Book ?), and the whole thing really slow. It picked up a tiny bit on Week 4 before getting slow again, but I found the very beginning of Chapter 2 well written (or at least smartly written) and now, even though the whole thing is still absolutely unbelievable, I want to know what the trick is. Even though I know I’ll probably end up being disappointed because there won’t be a way on Earth to make it credible.

Mind you, I’m only 44% in, and it might get worse yet.

Me every week.

Nah, still slow without any progression.

Same here, Eyeball hall puts me to sleep

I thought about writing and asking the same (but then forgot  so thanks!)
I just managed to finish chapter 1, and although there is this tiny cliffhanger at the end, I feel so … drained? … when reading this book. I don’t know why. Maybe it’s because it’s so similar to Saikawa&Moe? These are also draining in a way, but I’ve gotten used to that by now, so I don’t mind it as much any more…

I came to the same conclusion, in that I will read other stuff for the time being.

Thanks for mentioning this! I don’t think I have enough stamina to get that far right now though

Yeah I also kind of have to push myself through this book. It’s gotten better since maybe the 30%-mark for me, but even still last week night I picked it up to read Week 6 and stopped after a handful of pages. The writing style just doesn’t do it for me even when we’re not talking about science and philosophy. I also just find the characters kind of badly written

It’s not bad enough for me to drop so far (it’s Fine :tm:), but it’s not the most invigorating read

Agree that the book feels slow. I had mostly pushed through so that I can follow the schedule of this Book Club for the past few weeks.

As I will traveling for 10 days from tomorrow onwards, I had read ahead until Week 7. The book is finally getting more interesting that I had to stop myself from reading Week 8 until I’m back from my holidays. I hope it continues this way :joy:

My face when I saw both ーつつ and ーまま in one sentence: :flushed:  :exploding_head:
Funny how with all those “while” and ongoing states we barely get any action

Don’t give me false hope :eyes: :eyes: :eyes:
I should go read week 6

Trust me. You will want to continue with Week 8 once you complete Week 7. :joy:

Let’s be 100% clear : chapter 1 is AWFUL…. It gets better (not astronomically better, but better) from chapter 2 on

Thanks for all the feedback. I’m glad I’m not alone in this, but also not, haha. I’m happy to hear it gets better about halfway through at least. I guess I’ll continue bit by bit until I get there. It’s such a long day ay off still. :face_with_peeking_eye:

I just checked and it has 4 stars on Amazon and 6 sequels. It would need to pick up quite a lot of speed at some point to justify that rating for me. Maybe this is one of those 謎 effects of cultural differences.
