Discussion ground rules

Any spoilers, for the current chapters must be behind spoilers or detail curtains. When we get further in you don’t need to hide details that were revealed in previous chapters.
Always mention where you are in the book when discussing, ideally by chapter so people reading different versions have a clear point of reference.
Feel free to read ahead if it’s exciting! But please refrain from spoiling ahead of the appropriate week
If you have a question about grammar, vocab, cultural things, etc - ask! That can be part of the discussion too and I’m sure some folks would be happy to help.
Even if you don’t read the chapter(s) in time, you are still encouraged to post in the thread for that reading once you have finished it. I advise not reading ahead in the threads as you may see spoilers.

Alright - we’re officially starting volume 2! Just a single thread for the volume this time, but still 2 chapters a week. This week is ch 7-8

Chapter 7

Koharu always has the best faced.

Actually, it’s incredibly rude to talk about someone’s high like that.

Not much to say about that chapter. I feel with Mafuyu. I can’t imagine hanging with friends and family and suddenly your teachers join.

Chapter 8

I think this of the first cat mouth in the manga. And again it’s Koharu with the funny face. I’m also quite into this type of vertical line eyes.

This is another scene I remember especially well. Although it felt more meaningful the first time I read it. Like the difference between friends hugging and hugging your crush or something. It felt very powerful to me back then. Now I think you could also easily argue it’s just Mafuyu being unused to hugging and a little misunderstanding that makes things awkward. Quite liked all the hugging in this chapter anyway.

Chapter 8 was cute. Sometimes I feel like Mafuyu is the only “normal” character, but guess the others are fine too.

Chapter 9

I have no idea what kind of interaction this is. Not that it matters a lot. But it seems to be the kind of thing thats hard to know if you haven’t been to Japan.

Mafuyu is such a loser

I think Mafuyus opinion of Nanaya just rose massively. I also wonder what relationship she has with her own mother. I imagine a pretty close one.

Having this somewhat dramatic story line being in the past and all done reminds me how The legend of Zelda Breath of the wild has most of its story told in flashbacks. You get more depth and characterization from the dramatic parts. But since it’s in the past it doesn’t threaten the nonbiri atmosphere (and in the case of Zelda allows the game not to require a specific sequence).

I don’t quite get what they refer to here. Is it from the first chapter?:

Is her mentioning living with her mom 自慢？

違うくて is a new one. Not 違くて, which I’ve seen a lot more.

Chapter 11

The extra/cover comic belongs after this. Does anyone know what the three lines mean in the handwritten text? Looks kinda like 三 but the text makes most sense if you only it.

chapter 12

Confirmation that Mafuyu is close with her mom. She knows the names of her friends even though she’s never met them.

Officially Week 8 now. I’m assuming ppl want to read through volume 3 - so let’s say final chapter & first chapter for this week?

Also if everyone’s fine with it, we can just use this thread for vol 3 as well, rather than creating a new one

Week 8

Chapter 13 was emotional and sad. Chapter 14 was fun and cute.

I assume 補導される means they got a lecture.

I also got confused with 泣く人は泣く映画. I assume 泣く人 means people that cry (easily/often) and the sentence is grouped (泣く人は泣く)映画 so “a movie that makes people cry that have a tendency to cry”. But I’m not at all confident. And in that case I’m surprised by は instead of が.
