It’s actually week 2. Not 1…

chapter 2

Well. I’m more of a dyslexic than a chemist.

If it’s on why her self introduction wasn’t "and my favorite movie is attack of the zombie sharks, then I’ll keep defending the book/朝凪. If it’s on why she introduced herself as an outside type of person to the class and as an indoor type to 前原 then I’m more with you.

As for the stalking, I’m going to assume that she had some innocuous reason to know he would be there and it’s just a plot hole/sloppy writing with an unfortunate implication of stalking if you think too deep about it.

You could also say it’s a bit unfortunate how they keep their relationship secret. Why didn’t 朝凪 just talk to 前原 in the classroom? Did she not want to be seen with someone so low in the cast system? I don’t think we are meant to think of it that cynical and I’m sure 前原 would have been less comfortable and receptive in class.

Yes, that one. Okay I’m not going crazy.

I see what you did there :stuck_out_tongue: I was hesitating between “chapter 1” and “week 2” and the wires crossed.

Yeah. I’m not feeling particularly happy about any of this but I guess I’ll give the book the benefit of the doubt for now.

Unless you added them more recently I completely overlooked them. Didn’t think to look past the first table. I actually read all of chapter 1 this week. Both because the kindle page and percentages don’t apply to me and I didn’t know where to stop exactly, and because I had the time.

The first chapter hasn’t exactly blown me away. But I’m still looking forward to the rest of the story with some expectation. @暁のルナ this isn’t a case where volume 4 is somehow amazing and made you really like the series, right? You actually liked the first volume?

I’d probly just go “oh, uh ok” and shelve it for later :stuck_out_tongue:  . In any case apples to cheese oranges imo, since “loser with no friends at beginning of/a little into high school” is a really common trope, and something I can personally suspend disbelief on for now. Anyway we’ll probably just have to agree to disagree here.

Iirc she mentions it to Yuu (her best friend, who we know she went to middle school with) & Nina (who’s part of their group) - and even then, only did so get them to ditch her.

There’s a lot I can’t really say, but a lot of the questions y’all are asking are not lost on the author, and will eventually be answered.

They’ve been there since May 11. Are you reading on Bookwalker, or something else? If it’s Bookwalker, and you want me to grab percentages from that, I can

I liked it from vol 1, or I definitely wouldn’t have recommended it - considering it’s really uncommon for novel clubs to go past vol 1. While I liked it pretty well from the beginning, I agree the first chapter isn’t the strongest.

Heh, I guess that’s one of the problem with book club pace. It takes forever to get to any answer.

I disagree, even if something is a trope, it should still be justified. Justification can feel tedious if you read a lot of the same genre and the author doesn’t try to be original (I have to admit I thought that with some 悪役令嬢 stuff) but it’s still important. Also, technically, the moon being made of cheese (or claims of it, at least) is a trope too, and even have it’s own wikipedia page, so it’s not that different :stuck_out_tongue:

That being said, you are now making me worried that this point won’t be addressed in the future.

It’s just mentioned she showed the title (probably from the movie poster) to 天海 and “friends”, so I’m assuming that to be “whoever was around”, but even the main character, who is just randomly around heard about it. And, again, that’s not an issue, which is why I’m confused as to why she wanted to hide her hobbies in the first place.

Well, I need a “title contains a number” entry for my bingo. We’ll see where this goes.

Quick q, how many characters (moji) is this one? Trying to decide if I should tackle this or try apothecary diaries 2 first

Well, it is order of magnitudes easier than the latter, so it depends on what you want to achieve.
(I cannot check character count myself, so I’ll leave it to others who can)

Fair point

I was only referring to “at the beginning of a story”. Not implying anything about the future either way. So I think you’re reading too much into my comment.

Thx for clarifying

136k-ish according to https://moji.onl.jp/ and similar tools I ran it through

oh what do you know, i already picked it up in a rakuten sale at some point. Well, no harm going through it with the book club methinks… though not for a week or two, as I’m a bit busy busy.

watching the apothecary anime like 3 times might hopefully bring the level down a little bit on book 2… maybe just a single month of constant reading, instead of a month and a half. hah.

I’m also starting it in a few weeks, so we can be late together :joy:

week 2 (ch 1 pt 1) thoughts

Hmmm, so it seems implicit that Umi followed Maki after school that day, but who knows - maybe she heard indirectly that that’s his routine on Fridays or something.

Setting that aside, I’m kinda amazed it took her multiple months to even talk to him. She seems pretty socially confident/comfortable in general - so she’s surprisingly shy here I guess? I wonder if it’s like a “came from an all girls school, haven’t really talked to boys before” sorta thing? Otoh it’s not like they have any mutual social connection, and she is constantly hyper focused on by her classmates, and maybe he gives off some kind of “don’t wanna be talked to” vibe or something?

Similarly, the intro card thing seems to me like an instinctive “write the thing I’m ‘supposed to’ [rather than how I feel]” behavior - which idk there could be a variety of reasons for. That behavior is relatable to me, so it didn’t particularly register to me that much till ppl brought it up here.

I assume she chose the video shop to finally talk to him, both for its strategic value (assisting with the conversation - since it’s the thing she wants to bond over), and bc it’s out of the eyes of their classmates.

Besides that it seems a bit more convenient to grab videos first, what’s the confusion here?

Idk it seemed like he was barely hanging on, and mostly managed only bc they were talking about his special interest/hobby. She was definitely driving the conversation.

As an aside, this all got me curious to check the web novel version, and their first meeting is much crazier: she literally shows up at his apartment one Friday afternoon with pizza and drinks, and asks if she can come in and hang out with him - like what?!?!. I’m really glad they changed it to the video store encounter. Also you do get slightly more of a sense of why he doesn’t have friends (I don’t recommend checking rn tho)

When I was a university student, I often had pizza/b horror movie nights with friends (so, literally the things involved here). We would order the pizza first, then go to the rental shop a bit further up the street, get a movie or two, then come back to pick up the pizzas. It was way more efficient than waiting. At the same time, he is ordering one pizza, so maybe it doesn’t take that long?

It’s creepier, but at least it makes more sense. He mentioned that he does that every Friday, and it also makes sense that she would hesitate and thus take time to show up at basically a stranger’s place.

re week 2

Ah gotcha - not everyone’s in such a rush I guess? Idk sometimes it’s nicer to just zone out in a pizza shop a bit

Make way less sense to me… How the hell did she even get his address?? And like I just don’t buy someone randomly showing up at a stranger’s house like that… even as a high schooler, but I guess it’s possible?

(Btw you should probably spoiler that last part, since it’s still a spoiler for the WN)

I didn’t think that would be a concern for anyone, but sure.

I just started and immediately

What why how? I really don’t see anything 当然 about that.

Sigh. Anyway, moving on.

Ahhh this half of the chapter was a lot of fun, and much more interesting than the first half

Week 3 (ch1 pt 2)

So they’re keeping the friendship secret by mutual agreement, bc other ppl will make a big deal out of their gender & social hierarchy gap, and/or they don’t want ppl spreading rumors or something? I guess I can see where that would generate unwanted or negative attention for either/both… I don’t particularly like it, but I can accept it for the moment… But like what’s the long term plan here? Are you gonna hide your friendship forever? Gradually come out at some point down the future? Seems like a ticking time bomb, as class goes

The author did a great job of portraying the video games without specifically describing what was going on. 朝凪 gets surprisingly competitive/sore loser (I have trouble with that myself at times)

The flirting tickling was cute, and reminds me of my high school days… Also their ツッコミ is hilarious

I like that 朝凪 doesn’t feel like an object (as commonly happens in this genre). She’s a normal (ok slightly 変わってる) person. We’re not getting constant reminders that she’s the 2nd cutest girl, or like descriptions of her beautiful qualities or w/e… 前原 isn’t putting her on a pedestal, and despite his self-isolation complex, he’s not all timid and in awe of her. He’s not getting all flustered at every little thing. They’re just normal friends.

They’ve both sorta got a point… But also you can’t really call him weird if you just went along with this, and didn’t propose anything else… he clearly needs to get out of the house a bit more tho

What the hell else could it mean? :joy: That whole exchange was pretty hilarious (it’s not like I can relate to “leaving the house” being a foreign concept)… But also that seems kinda risky for supposedly trying to keep your friendship secret

Again, I appreciate that this didn’t turn into a comedic panic moment. He’s surprisingly cool-headed

Ahh yes

girl, wut?! :joy: she’s quite the flirt in this whole exchange

I love how much his mom sasses him - but then also is like totally supportive, and gives him a reasonable amount. Boy hasn’t quite learned to budget yet… he’s like 75% there, but doesn’t get that you need to have extra money on hand, in case. Otoh he’s probably trying to be considerate of his mother and their household economics - which is rather commendable of him.

I totally get his instinct to hide that his friend’s a girl from his mother… but like, maternal instincts, I can’t imagine that’s gonna work out for too long

And there’s our cover photo

私も、私も… she’s surprisingly risk taky… I guess she’s enjoying this whole secret friends thing tho

I appreciate that he’s thinking about how he can be a better friend already / knows that she can’t be the only one putting in effort

This 告白 scenario at the end is kinda interesting… I guess it might complicate or limit their friendship if she starts dating someone… So maybe he’s feeling some concern over possible abandonment?

Also oof with Nina not even realizing who he is - guess his self intro didn’t leave that much of an impression :stuck_out_tongue: . At least 天海 recognizes him & is polite/considerate

week 3 ch1

Also he literally had a pizza he was planning to eat at home, and they were in a rental shop. I don’t really see what the alternative would have been (also, I really thought that was her plan too, since she apparently act on his self intro when he mentioned watching movies on Friday evening).

Yeah, it’s a strange thing to joke about. My follow up would have been to make sure if that’s what she actually wants, and if not to tone it done and if yes I am calling the cops bye

In a way, it kinda makes the whole situation more understandable (it’s a way to get adrenaline at literally 0 risk), but I still find it really weird.

I mean, yeah, it wasn’t particularly remarkable from my point of view. I think it has more to do with the fact that he just disappears from the classroom whenever he can. That does explain why he has. I friend, too, so at least it solves one of the things I was confused about.
I’m fine with him being a hardcore introvert who wants to avoid people but still wants to make friends despite it.

I’m so behind (well, I haven’t even started). The company I work for got bought out by another company and it has been absolute chaos for the last few weeks. Hopefully can start to catch up next week!
