Week 20 Reply

That’s a pretty good point. Unlike most physical attacks, fire magic seems effective against the monster that they knew they are going to fight, so it seems a bit weird that they didn’t get good fire mages to join them. I think Nyango used some wind + fire combination attack, but surely other mages have used combination attacks before?

This world can’t decide how many characteristics from the animals the animal people actually have. Like, apparently dog people are drug sniffers, but we’ve never seen Nyango talk about having increased senses from being a cat, even though he should. I also find it weird that there are horse people and… regular horses. Do the horse people ride the horses?? :cold_sweat:

week 18

 Well, the fact that it’s the last chapter of the book kind of casts a damper on any excitement.

This section made me laugh because the last chapter was all about how scary the bronze wolf was and how they need to fight it, and then we open the chapter with…. Nyango’s get-rich-quick fish skewer selling scheme.

Hey, you’re the one who was joking about him setting off in volume 3 or so, so take what you get :stuck_out_tongue:

Btw, feel free to make a new reply even when you’re still the latest post in the thread - I would’ve almost missed your “week 18” if I hadn’t specifically checked again because I got a notification from your like on my post.

Ah, I’ve gotten a bit too careful about clogging up book club threads, I guess :joy: Noted!

week 19

You know, now that you mention it, it has been a while since we’ve heard from him. Actually, before I started this chapter, I thought the bronze wolf was being built up so much that maybe something dramatic would happen during the fight like Zeol dying! But now Zeol hasn’t been in the chapter at all so it seems less likely.

I agree, it’s been more fun to read with the different characters and the goal of fighting a creature and everyone having to work together. I also like how Nyango’s knowledge of the mountains around the town has been helpful to everyone!

Ahhh, and we’ve finally defeated the bronze wolf. Partway through the fight, I started feeling a little bad for the wolf. I think it would have been better if the wolf had killed someone we actually cared about, like maybe one of the villagers. Then the whole attack on the wolf would have felt more fraught because they need to prevent it from happening again. The only people we saw get killed by the wolf were random adventurers we’d never met before, and the whole thing started to feel a bit easy for Nyango- he got away with no injuries, all the credit, and no one he cared about was hurt either.

Yeah, I don’t remember any descriptions of other magic users. I’d like to see another magic user who’s stronger than Nyango, but we haven’t really seen him need to learn from anyone in that respect. It seemed like everyone else was just attacking with arrows and spears and stuff.

Nyango: “No, I would rather stay here for 2 more volumes”
Soggyboy:

Ha. Don’t underestimate her just because she’s old

Nyango is surrounded by some pretty good people. That fact doesn’t make leaving easier, but they themselves do because they want the best for him

I wonder why we barely hear about Nyango’s parents.

I just realized that he’s gonna live in the same place as Miguel again

Haha. And there you have the reason why this is a cat-person isekai

Also I can’t believe how short that あとがき is. I thought there was a law that you have to write at least 5 pages

And well, that’s it. We’re at the end of the book. I’m not happy with everything (namely: overly long training sequences and that one character who had absolutely no character growth whatsoever), but all in all this was pretty fun to read.

Thanks for reading this with me!

I feel like that’s a common problem with book club pace. I read the whole thing in 2-3 days, and it felt fine

I think it’s more Legato reading pace than book club pace in this case. I had to put in a lot of effort for every page, so if it’s another 10 pages of training, again, where absolutely nothing of interest happens… that’s a bit frustrating.

If I could read the whole thing in 2-3 days I’d probably be fine with it too

This section was killing me. “But if I leave, who will collect herbs in the mountains??” I never want to hear about collecting herbs in the mountains again :joy:

Nyango’s parents were pretty mean to him! Still, I feel like we got so little of the character relationships, I would have liked to see this developed more. I can guess reading this scene at the end of the book that Nyango spent all his time with カリサ because his family hates him, but it would have been nice to see that explicitly addressed in the book a little more.

I wrote my thoughts in a review but overall I thought it had pacing issues and we didn’t get very much characterization depth. I think if it was heavily edited down it could have been an enjoyable 2 or 3 chapters at the beginning of a book! Reading at a beginner speed doesn’t help; reading it in 2-3 days like @Naphthalene is probably the best way to read this book. I probably wouldn’t have minded the issues in it as much if I could read it that fast too!

Thanks @Legato for hosting!

Final week

I’m glad we actually got this part, it would have been weird if no reference hadn’t been made to them, and this really clarifies the way they think. But I agree with Soggyboy that it felt a bit too rushed and having this more developed would have been nice.

Ikr, who cares about herbs dude :joy: you’re going to spend your whole life doing this??

I’m actually glad it wasn’t too long, I often find the あとがき to be a bit too much of unnecessary bla bla

Overall thoughts on the book:

I disagree a bit on the fact that reading it in 2-3 days would have made the training less of a slog… honestly, I feel like very long training sequences are always a bit unnecessary, especially in the beginning of a series, where you should be trying to hook in the readers to continue reading. I agree that editing could have improved the flow significantly.

It was a fine read, and I didn’t know what to expect, but I guess I was a bit… disappointed in some aspects? Perhaps this will be explored in future volumes, but I feel like there was so much potential in world building and characterization that was just wasted. I know the focus was mainly the fighting scenes, and at least we got some good development of the adventurer’s guild and the system. But with so many different races of characters, I was hoping we’d learn more about their differences along the way and be introduced to a broader range of personalities (which only happened in the last chapter). Even the magic system - the fact that only Nyango used significant magic skills to kill the bronze wolf in the last chapter seems like a waste.

I guess it all sounds a bit negative, but I’m still glad I gave the book a chance and joined the club. Much as it’s good to enjoy a book, you also learn a lot about your tastes from a book you enjoy less. And of course, many thanks to Legato for organizing everything :slightly_smiling_face:
