I have been dragging my feet on this book (I don’t think I have finished week 2 yet), but all these mentions of asexuality in the thread are making my ears go up like a cat hearing a can of tuna being opened. (And by “all these mentions” I mean like 2, but that is PLENTY in the current state of things -insert either laughing or sobbing emoji).
So thanks for the boost in interest
ch3
Absolutely same. It took me a few seconds to realize it wasn’t
This continues to be my biggest issue with comprehension. Combined with abrupt scene changes and long passages of inner dialog that is sometimes in a thought bubble, sometimes in a text box, and sometimes just in the page, I’m often just confused where we are and who’s in the scene.
I still think that despite the actual language used being quite simple, this is like a L28 book for me in how head it is for me to follow the story.
That said I was a lot more into the story this week than last. If I could start to keep these characters straight I think I’d be getting into it
fwiw I really don’t get this vibe, just more that he’s either a teenager and doesn’t really know how to be a good partner, or he’s just not really into her and hasn’t come to that realization yet. I would be ok with a pivot into either that or him realizing that he isn’t straight (whatever form that takes), but I’d need a lot more than 2 volumes to get there at this pace.
With most of the BL that I read, if they don’t smash before/during and/or after confession, you haven’t gotten your money’s worth
Ok, but like do you just get a like a chapter or two post-confession, or do you actually get to see them be a couple for a while? In yuri, it’s often the former, unless the story starts with them together
I don’t really care about smashing
It usually ends after the confession and smash. 僕らの食卓 | L20 is probably the only thing I’ve read recently that has more than this. I could go back through my library and find more, but I think me struggling to come up with more kinda proves the point.
For me it depends, but a lot of 2000-2010s manga it was kinda that or no BL for you, so… I’m glad there’s been a lot more nuanced storytelling in BL in the past decade or so, but I’m also not above reading about two impossibly hot guys who are gonna smash.
THIS!!!
Ch3 is
… boring me to no end …I keep stopping and starting
agree on the difficulty (not the easiest read or me) - tho half of that is probably lack of motivation (the angsty teenage stuff is getting old - my curmudgeon side is showing - not get off my lawn haha)
wish there were more cute romance scenes than angst (even if sometimes that stuff ends up being way too sickenly sweet)
really need to finish this chapter - hoping ch4 is better (I’ll finish the series cuz completionism but this story isn’t making me care much about the characters)
The BL book club also read ギンモクセイの仕立て屋 | L24, where they get together in the middle.
ch3
It’s not as bad, but I feel the same. Having finished the volume, I can say that I liked chapter 4 better, though.
I did finish ch3 … think this type of BL story isn’t my thing personally
will see about finishing this vol this weekend (gotta get caught up - been slacking a little in reading)
I did think about that one, but it also had some time skips so I couldn’t decide how to classify it
Seems like my tastes are way in the minority here. I’ve been holding my tongue a lot because I can’t comment without hindsight at all, haha. Don’t want to spoil it for anyone.
Agree that this mangaka suffers from same face syndrome. Nothing unsolvable with a bit of re reading, but it’s quite noticable even across works.
つまんない
Honestly in half the stuff I read it’s probably better if they don’t smash
I had trouble at first, but I was alright with ch 3
Eww… (kidding mostly… But I generally only reread if something’s totally incoherent or “wait, what did they just do/say?!”)
I’m so curious now
Oh no no, nothing too… Out of left field? Is that what they say? Fitting for a slice of life it’s just minor spoilers regarding everything. A big problem is that I don’t have the books with me and so I’m never quite sure what’s already happened and what’s yet to come.
And we’re on to week 4! We’ll finish volume one this week.
Week | Chapter | Pages | Page Count |
---|---|---|---|
Week 4 | 4 | 153 - end | 33 |
Reminder that we have a catch up week next week, so we’ll start volume 2 in two weeks.
So, I really liked the mention that Yamato too was trying to figure that gay thing out. People do not magically get knowledge of LGBT stuff even if they are part of the group, and it was nice to see that acknowledged.
On a different topic, I’m not sure of how I feel about Akito, but at least we did get some “BL” content this time.
Enjoyed this chapter much, much more, and think I’ll continue to the next volume
ch 4 thoughts
I guess Sakura has got some sort of abusive home situation going on, but either way he creeps me the hell out
Can definitely see that fire starting to kindle more btwn Yuiji & Yamato… And like yeah Yuiji, you’re waaaaaay too hung up on all this, for me to believe you’re not catching feelings… I mean even the side characters are slowly picking up that there’s something there (tho I assume they don’t think suspect romantic)… And the way Yamato was all intense at the end, before parting with Yuiji
In general, I love all the introspection and thoughtfulness. And can definitely relate to Yamato with a lot of this, and want to give the poor kid a hug
Edit: the whole ノンケ discussion reminded me of a character from 私の百合はお仕事です! | L27 who has this frustration as well
Are both of those typo versions of Yuiji?
That gave me a good laugh and yes, thx for catching
this is why I hate typing Japanese in English on my phone
stayed up late to finish ch4…
honestly still not my fav but I’ll read vol 2 cuz completionist
thoughts on ch4.....spoilers
hmmm the abusive relationship thing… not sure what’s actually happening but I suspect he ran away from home and his family found him at the part time job (with that phone call) somehow the shop owner is gay or an ally and helping him get by (we all need these awesome people at some point - gay or not!)
but it may not just be the family that the abuse is coming from, he could have went from the family into an abusive relationship with the 30 year old…hopefully not but wouldn’t be surprising - very very difficult to extricate oneself from those situations - maybe we will find out more in vol 2
do feel a little bad for him but then again, they are all young and mentally have a lot of growing up to do… will see what vol 2 has in store when that starts
really hope the story improves and we get some actual adulting (yeah I know it’s probably hopeless)…thankfully this isn’t the only BL book in the library
Curious to know what you mean by this. Adult/less teeny behavior? Adults in the story?
