What are you reading today?

It seems to happen no matter what I put in my cart and goes away if I connect to a VPN.

I finished the webnovel version after I reached the end of published books at the time. I liked it a lot, even though it’s not the best ever. Solid 4*, I would recommend it to people who don’t mind the isekai look-and-feel (despite not being technically isekai).

I haven’t read the last two published volumes since I have too many other things to read, but the published version that I read was higher quality than the webnovel and added a lot of content while fixing plot holes (so it’s worth it, not just a money grab). I think the next volume should be the last one too.

Aw. I guess that’s pretty obvious then

For what it’s worth, I can still put random physical things in my cart, even if I use my not-in-Japan delivery address. So maybe it’s a gradual rollout or something like that.

I don’t know if you’re on WK as well and/or are interested in reading it with a book club, but the WK Intermediate Book Club will read it… sometime, probably. It tied in a poll a few days ago and we’re figuring it out.

More related to the topic of this thread, I finished ゴーストハント1 旧校舎怪談 | L33 today. I think I put it in my wishlist by accident after misunderstanding something @shablul said? I can’t find the exchange anymore…

Anyway, I liked it over all, even though I found the middle part a bit slow. I came in expecting (spoilers) supernatural stuff, got disappointed when it appeared supernatural was not a thing (and thus thought the series would be more of a “debunking ghost claims” sort of thing), thought the symptoms looked like low carbon monoxide intoxication (body feels heavy, nausea, vertigo), but was wrong about that too (I guess there’s no source for the gas leak, oh well), but then the end (I’m going to separate spoilers, because that’s an important one) showed that supernatural stuff does exist? Why is no one freaked out about 女史’s PK powers? Even if all the other people are indeed experts in supernatural stuff (which I doubt) it seems strange that they just go “oh, okay” about it. At least, the main character is not an expert but still just shrug it off?

On a side note, I didn’t know it was a rewriting of an older book series, but I guessed the time period when it turned out Internet is not a thing

Anyway, I’m curious to see where this series goes. Since it’s only 7 volumes, I’ll probably keep reading… but not now since (baring a miracle) none of the other volumes would fit my remaining bingo spots and the end of the year is getting close

I can put stuff in the cart, just can’t check out.

I can also click on “Proceed to checkout” and everything seems alright on that final screen before I’d actually buy it. Not clicking on “Place order” just to test it though, in case you mean that.

No, of course not haha. It was failing on “Proceed to checkout”.

tbh if someone came up to me and said “this girl has PK” I would probably also be at an “awkward ok?” phase the entire time lol
it’s one of those things that are pseudoscience but also so well known as a science that you’re not sure how to react to

overall I feel like if you already plan to continue the series it will explain things about their reactions (the first volume is pretty much the “vibe rule” book and a lot of things in question kinda come up with time in other arcs and etc from my experience with this series)

edit: happy to hear you’re continuing though, I’ll have someone to compare reactions with :joy:

edit 2: maybe because I’m streaming the anime adaptation?
either that or the well exorcism thing I put here once upon a time lmao

But that’s the thing, he didn’t just said it, they went through 3-4 inexplicable events caused by her power, 2 of which could probably be life threatening.
I would get the men in black to her place ASAP.

I honestly don’t know if this is a spoiler since I haven’t seen anything about it in neither the anime or the books so far

I don’t think there’s a MIB for this lol

spoilers for the books later so at your own risk

they often talk about scientific debates about this field, and they even talked about whether or not it’s science or pseudo-science and what keeps it apart from actual sciences, so in terms of “legislation” they have no way to keep her in check except for how they did it here. The only exception is another case they were in where the girl knew too much already hence the only way to “keep her in check” was actively teach her, which they do and it doesn’t go deep into what she’s doing but they make sure to give her a “cameo/reminder appearance” on the matter each book since her case

edit: non spoiler for @Naphthalene

this way of not actually doing something while technically having done something is kinda nostalgic for me 90’s wise lmao
not sure if you’ll agree :joy:

Well, I’m not reading them so I guess I’ll just smile and nod or shake my head otherwise.

So sounds like it’s probably worth a go, in either format. Good to know!

I’m in too many book clubs, and reading too many things at present, so don’t even wanna contemplate another rn lol. But thx for the heads up!

I finished 夜の名前を呼んで 4 | L23 today. Got stalled on it for a bit because there was a really boring two-chapter story that didn’t involve any of the main characters. Dropped my rating from a 4 to a 3 because of that.

Speaking of getting bored and stalled, I was enjoying the math and character stuff in 博士の愛した数式 | L34, but when I got to this long baseball section it killed all my motivation. Haven’t touched the book in a couple weeks (in fairness, that’s also partially because I’m playing Astro Bot). I’m thinking I might just pause on it for now and return to 本好き, then come back to it later. After all, I really want to finish 本好き before book 5 of Stormlight Archive comes out on December 6th.

If that’s the one I am thinking about, you shouldn’t be that far from the end. Just power through.

If it is not the one I have in mind, then I have bad news.

I meant the spoilers

I finally finished しかもフタが無い (ちくま文庫 よ-32-1) | L26??, a book my lovely spouse gifted me waaaay too long ago.
It’s a collection of sketches filled with absurd humor, which I do typically enjoy (and the reason why my spouse bought it for me in the first place). The title itself, a play on the expression 身も蓋もない, is a good indicator of what to expect (there’s definitely no 身 in there). It was a bit hit or miss, though, so I have to admit I got bored half way through and let it sit for way too long  until today, that is. The discussion with @seanblue about just pushing through motivated me, and I just finished.

Anyway, turns out it’s a debut (I mean, it’s written in a large font on the cover, so it wasn’t really a secret), so that definitely goes into my bingo card.

I’m halfway through. :see_no_evil:

What do you mean by there not being any 身 in there? Sounds like you might know something about why this phrase means what it means and maybe it’ll help me remember the meaning.
