What are you reading today?

I have finally caught up with my holiday-generated backlog of book club reading (which has now reached the stage where I needed to draw up a table that I can tick off each week so I don’t forget any!). So naturally instead of making more progress with one of my ongoing non-club books (My Humanity | L30?? is closest to the finishing line with only one 100 page short story to go) I decided to start 振仮名の歴史 | L30?? . Only read the introduction so far but it seems like an engagingly written pop-sci treatment of the topic. Ironically (but not surprisingly) the text itself does not make much use of furigana :slightly_smiling_face:

Someone on WK had posted about all of prequel QQスイーパー 1 | 26 and the first seven volumes of the main series クイーンズ・クオリティ 1 | 29 being free for a limited time on Bookwalker, so I’ve been reading through those. So far I’ve finished all 3 volumes of QQ スイーパー and the first volume of クイーンズ.

I gotta say, “supernatural shoujo about cleaning and mental health” was not something I was looking for, but I’ve really enjoyed it so far. It’s a good mix of lighthearted and serious, and almost all the words I didn’t know when I started reading are repeated often so it’s good for language learning too! Definitely recommend checking it out, it’s free to read for about a week longer or so.

It’s not supernatural but if you find the subgenre of women cleaning and mental health to be your thing, ふろがーる might be your jam (TV show, though)

I honestly love that it’s a subgenre :joy: Now that I think of it, I’ve actually read Marie Kondo’s The Life-Changing Manga of Tidying Up: A Magical Story in English, so this isn’t even my first read in that category. Lol.

Thanks for the rec, I’ll have to check it out! Does it have much of an overarching storyline, or is more episodic?

Very episodic. There’s a few tiny side stories that get developed but honestly I think you could grab any episode in isolation and not be too lost.

Gotcha! I suspect this one is pretty different in most respects to the QQ series, which is a lot more plot-driven, but it might fit within another subgenre I occasionally enjoy - “someone obsessed with a particular thing enjoys/does the thing and then waxes poetic about it every episode” :joy: (see さぼリーマン甘太朗 S1 | 25)

Forgot to update yesterday, but I did manage to finish all these in time! For the first time I can remember, I have no books on my “reading” list. (In case anyone else is curious, it looks like this:

I’m sure I’ll start reading again in a couple days, probably the next 本好き volume and maybe finally catch up on チェンソーマン。

Congratulations! :tada:

I’ve been reading every day this year, but since I’m treating VNs and text-heavy games as “reading” too, I see this more often. (I’m looking forward to the time I can track those too here.)

And I thought I had a lot:

I’ll be starting a new one on Monday though, so soon to be 9 (and it really should already be 9 actually, I need to start 痴人の愛 but I’m putting it off). I don’t think I’ve seen 0 since I started using Natively. It looks so …empty.

I always make sure to start something new pretty much immediately… otherwise I fall into a slump and don’t pick up anything for days or even weeks.

I feel better about having 5 going now. (Though this also possibly means that that number might increase soon, whoops)

Well…

(Admittedly, these are all the books I ever started but never finished for lots of reasons - „too hard for now“ ot „too boring for my current reading pace“ are the most prevalent, I guess. And I am planning to reduce this pile a bit in the next few months )

This screenshot doesn’t show how many you’re currently reading though? Or does it?

It says „Showing 38 results“ in the lower part
(I don’t know how to produce the view that you both posted - can repost if you let me in on the secret )

Edit: Found it!

Oh! :flushed:
But when I go to your profile I only see 10? (Edit: I guess it’s the abbreviated version :joy:)

38 is a very respectable number indeed!

It seems to be a different widget that only shows 10 books (also there is no total number in the „Currently reading“ header). Probably Brandon could not imagine that a single person would accumulate so many half-read books

I call it my wall of shame btw as it contains all my failed attempts :flushed::sweat_smile:

I’ve just finished re-reading ミラーさんII blue novel from みんなの日本語 textbook series. Found this time I read a lot faster and understood almost all of each chapter with very few look ups (approx 15-20 words the whole book).

I liked it this time since I could understand most of it and managed to use extensive reading for the most part with just the occasional intensive part when I wasn’t quite sure of the grammar or longer sentences.

I’ve now started reading ふらいんぐういっち。I’ve enjoyed the first chapter so far, only a few look ups as well so thinking Natively Lv 18-21 seems to be my sweet spot atm.

I wonder if a “Stalled” category would be useful…
