Dang, that sounds really interesting. I’ll need to add it to the ever-growing list…
Since I finished 本好きの下剋上 #2, now comes the dilemma to me:
- Finish 異世界のんびり農家 #1
- Start 本好きの下剋上 #3

Once I finish 彼女がお兄ちゃんになったらしたい10のこと 2 | L25 I’ll need to pick a new 4-koma to read. Think I’ll read one I have in physical copy this time, so here are my options.

Since finishing 異世界のんびり農家 #1 was the winner, the cliffhanger of 本好きの下剋上 #2 will have to wait for a bit.
Maybe I can use that to push 異世界のんびり農家 forward.
Thanks for voting!
Can anyone recommend some good nonfiction books about nature, specifically birds? I’d like to start building that vocabulary.
What book should I restart reading?
I’ve accumulated a little pile of books I started and then put aside for one reason or another. Which of them should I pick back up when I finish the book I’m currently actively reading? Here are the options, and how far I am through them (hope I got the poll syntax right!):
- 涼宮ハルヒの直観 涼宮ハルヒの直観 | L36 (128/418 pages)
- 理由 理由 | L30?? (92/686 pages)
- 私小説―from left to right (132/462 pages)
- Keep ignoring all of these and start another fresh book from the to-read pile
The Haruhi book is the last in the series, and it’s two short stories followed by the main one; I stopped after the short stories. I really enjoyed the first 11 in the series, but this one came out years after I’d read the series, and I didn’t get round to it until recently.
理由 is perhaps the easiest to read of the three, but it’s also the longest and the one I’m least far into, and I just finished a different long 宮部 みゆき novel… Mystery.
“私小説―from left to right” (yes, that’s the whole title) is perhaps the most interesting – it’s a semi-autobiagraphical novel by somebody who moved to the US from Japan at the age of 12 and then went to university there, about her experience growing up there and ending up not really feeling truly at home in either country. In an attempt to capture the experience of being bilingual the text liberally mixes in English words and phrases (though it isn’t truly a “you need to be fluent in both languages” experience), and so it’s written left-to-right rather than in traditional column format, as the title suggests. But because it’s not a heavily plot-driven book, that makes it a bit harder to read, at least for me: I’m less motivated to keep going. (It’s not on natively, so no link or difficulty ranking.)
PS: why does Discourse expand the natively URLs in the post edit preview but not in the actual post??
PPS: apologies for losing whoever’s vote that was, I forgot to set the poll to public=true.
Is it actually finished? AFAIK wasn’t it just in a tremendous hiatus?
There was a 9 years hiatus before the publication of that volume. As far as I know, it’s not the end of the series either, so we are currently in another hiatus (edit: I just checked the publication dates, we are at 2.5 years, that’s nothing compared to the previous one… actually, it might not even be a hiatus from the point of view of the author at this point).
Maybe? I’d assumed the original 11 novels were an intentional stopping point, because the last one felt to me like it was tying things up a bit, and because there weren’t massive gaps between when they came out (though looking at wikipedia now there was a 4 year gap between 9 and the simultaneous release of 10 and 11). So I took volume 12 as one of those “author decides to come back to a series they’d previously regarded as finished” situations.
- Feels a little boring because it’s too easy and a kid’s book, but I want to mark it done and get it off my “currently reading” list.
マジック・ツリーハウス 1 恐竜の谷の大冒険 | L20 - Second volume of a high school romance. Not my favorite genre, but cute for what it is and also free for a limited time. ホリミヤ 1 | L22
- A Japanese friend recommended it to me. Lots of cultural references already that I’ve had to look up, so not the easiest pleasure-read, but seems like an interesting premise.
宇宙兄弟 1 | L29

What should I read while waiting for the book club to start? I’ve been feeling lower motivation to read this week, so I’m looking for an easy win.
I voted purely based on ‘free for a limited time’ won’t necessarily be an option later. Also I watched the drama adaptation of it (it also has an anime - haven’t seen) and it was easy enough to watch even though it’s also not my genre of choice. It’s a very low-stress easy series, imo.
I’m currently working my way through ティアムーン帝国物語7, so I want to do something easier afterwards.
- A Red Riding Hood retelling set in a German boarding school that I found next to かがみの孤城 in a Japanese bookstore - lots of katakana names but looks like a fun (and hopefully easy-ish) read.
赤ずきんの森の少女たち | L22?? - A high school romance novel, narrated by a boy who falls in love with the girl sitting next to him. The kindle sample was very easy to read and it looks cute.
隣の席の佐藤さん | L29 - A short GL about an aspiring idol with difficulty expressing emotions who falls in love with a girl who’s very emotionally expressive and sincere.
さよならすべてのブルー | L28

I can’t seem to vote on the poll, but ホリミヤ manga is pretty good overall, and unique. Vol 5-7 are not so great imo, but it improves again after that (I just finished vol 9 of 16, but putting it down for now, for a few reasons)
The ホリミヤ anime is basically a straight adaptation of the manga, tho sometimes they shuffle things around a bit. There’s a bunch of stuff they left out, but are now releasing in ホリミヤ -piece-
Where did you watch it? I might be interested in that at some point
ルリドラゴン is wonderful!! Also they have a great voiced edition of it on YouTube: 『ルリドラゴン』 - YouTube
Sorry, I closed it earlier today and forgot to post! Thanks for the recommendation I might have to look up the anime some time! It seems like a good kind of story for when I want something laidback to watch.
宇宙兄弟 was winning for a while and then ホリミヤ came back for a tie, so I decided to read a bit of both for now. Finished a section of 宇宙兄弟, so it’s time to dip back into ホリミヤ!
thank you so much!!! I was planning to reread it so having a voiced edition will be great!!!
