You made me re-check that the poll was functioning properly and I didn’t screw something up
After posting it, I realized it could be taken literally
But it might as well be
What do you have against poor GJ部?
Normally I’d vote next volume, but since you voted GJ部, I went with that too. Also looks like it should be a quicker read
I just really really really like 本好き.
“What should I read next?” – votes divide evenly 6 to 6. Fat lot of help we are, eh?
Megumin voted themselves, though and that easily counts as 10 votes.
I love honsuki but I think variety is better as to not burn out on a specific series, but that might just be a me problem.
In the case of 本好き, I read the full series straight (moving on to the webnovel once I finished the last published volume at the time). I just couldn’t put it down But YMMV
I voted to test the poll due to a certain someone
In any case I’d count my vote in case of a tie, but seems like it won’t be necessary.
Hi all! o/ So I’m planning to participate in the WK fall readathon on Friday, and I’ve got a couple of different options for how to structure my reading that day. I’m not entirely sure what I want to do, but I’d like some kind of plan going in, so I wanted to ask you all for advice.
The way I see it, the options I’m considering are:
- Go for the “read a book in a day” bingo square
- Read a whole bunch of my physical manga, since it’s been a goal this year to try to work through more of them
- Try to finish reading 流沙の記憶 | L30?? (I’m about 2/3 through the book currently)
- Read whatever with no regards to plan
This feels like my best opportunity to check off that bingo square for option #1, but I lack confidence in actually being able to do it, honestly. The restrictions I’ve set up for myself for my bingo are: 1) must be a book I bought before 2024, and 2) manga does not count*. (I’ve set up some filters in my library to easily check what counts using these criteria.) I don’t really have any sub-30 level books on hand beyond one or two, and having not tried this kind of thing before, I don’t know if my reading speed/stamina is sufficient to stick it out to the end on anything 30+.
*There are a few cases where I’m allowing manga to count, but it’s more on a case-by-case basis.
In theory I would also personally consider starting and finishing a complete manga series in one day as counting; I haven’t really explored that option, though I may need to look into it.
Anyway, any thoughts? I’m way overthinking this, I know, but the next good opportunity I’ll have to fill that square won’t likely come up until the end of the year, and unless I shift my selection criteria the pool of candidates will only shrink, not increase.
Spending a day reading through physical stuff is nice (personally I love reading physical and mostly get ebooks out of convenience re: space, time, cost) and when you’re done you’ll have a nice stack to show off as finished.
Also if I recall correctly some of these are untested series, so if you end up not liking some you can get rid of those and have room for more
Yep, that’s correct! A quick estimate might be that around 2/3 are series I haven’t read any of before?
I would definitely go for the manga. It seems like the most straightforward and fun plan, with the least barriers. Plus reading physical stuff is fun, and manga are even prettier in physical.
If you’re not already sure of your reading speed & stamina, the first option sounds unrealistic. Option 3 sounds like a decent runner up - but also finishing it sounds like something you’re gonna do anyway. So why not take the day to do something different?
You have a few short books in there. YMMV but I finished 推し、燃ゆ in 1.5 sittings (mostly because I got interrupted) over the course of a single day. That was maybe 4 hours of reading total? Probably less honestly.
Even if you read ~5 times slower than me, you can still do it in a single day.
あの頃のBLの話をしよう | L30?? is also kinda short, but that may be a waste to rush through it.
秋の牢獄 | L30 is also pretty short. It’s a collection of three short stories. I found the first two to be absolute page turners, the third one a bit less so. Guesstimating your reading speed, I think you can do it in 8-10 hours. That does require some stamina, but the different stories give natural breaks.
I just wanted to say I agree with @Naphthalenes opinion here completely 100%. When you hit the third story you might slow down, so it could be hard to read the entire thing in one day?
I vote for わたしの幸せな結婚 | L31! It has a few words for “older” items or fantasy things due to the setting that are funky, but it’s a popcorn read page turner for sure if you like Cinderella type romance stories. I binged it and finished it pretty quickly, even though I read it when my reading level was much lower than it is now.
I checked your book list (before reading the comments) and from the books I read myself I also thought that 秋の牢獄 | L30 would be the most suitable - the three short stories make for interesting changes of contents, and so might give you more energy if you run out of steam.
Other than Naphthalene and bungakushoujo I thought the first and third stories were the most gripping ones though
I was also considering 狐笛のかなた | L30 but I noticed that it’s almost 400 pages, so nope , and I’d also recommend against 恩田陸’s books - the writing is not too hard once you settle in, but the writing does not pull you along most of the time, so it’s not ideal if you want to get through it.
Haha wow, I especially liked the second one! Different strokes
Maybe @eefara should read it now and let us know which ones they enjoy for more data points!
I’ve been thinking of reading 秋の牢獄 as a fall/October read regardless, so the timing does work out well. @cat and @暁のルナ have great points regarding the manga, though.
Clearly you need to free up a second day to do the challenge on both
Right? It’s a shame; my Sunday should be free, but my Saturday’s likely going to drain all my energy for the weekend, haha.
