You make it sound like that book contains words that are not in the dictionary
I guess names are not in the dictionary, so it’s technically correct
In fairness, your use of the phrase “Chinese inspired words” does make it sound that way.
Ah, I was trying to refer to the genre (“Chinese inspired fantasy” but there’s no fantasy in this series).
I’m talking about words like 襦裙 (which is in my dictionary but not in the default one from my phone)
Am i being silly? I read some reviews on natively someone said they had to look up words separately tbh idk how else to interpret “outdated chinese words” helppp:moyai:
Ah, I I think I found the review you are talking about. They are complaining that the titles of the four main concubines like 貴妃 or 淑妃 don’t have furigana and they had to google it.
Despite the inclusion of readings for the character names and some of these titles, I was surprised the novel didn’t include the reading for the 4 Imperial Consorts: 貴妃, 賢妃, 淑妃, 徳妃. I had to look these up separately online using my Google skills and Japanese reading knowledge.
I remember the readings myself but I can’t remember if it’s because I looked them up on Wikipedia or from another similar series…
Edit: can’t really find a source that gives them all in one place, so for convenience きひ けんぴ しゅくひ and とくひ respectively. けんぴ is the only one that’s a bit tricky.
Thank you sm this was really helpful and encouraged me to read it sooner than later
I can’t decide what manga series I want to continue* with next.
*strictly speaking it’s 夏目友人帳 #1 but I’m about halfway through it.
Well I guess I’m overwhelmingly gonna read Natsume today. Thanks for making that easy.
Just finished Inside Mari. I like yuri, queer, body swap, horror type stuff. I am a slow reader and I think I will have to sit around level 18 - 21
I am not super good at Japanese, I only have 1500 mature cards in Anki but I love love reading
What should I read? (list taken from my profiles wishlist)
Alternatively… suggest me something not on this list!!
はなにあらし is one of my recommended early series fwiw.
I think you already know this, but there is the book club starting soon for どれが恋かがわからない too
Clearly 先輩はおとこのこ is winning, but I wasn’t a huge fan. I read the first three volumes and just couldn’t get into it.
If you’re interested in other trans / gender bending manga, here’s some I’d recommend:
- ぜんぶきみの性 | L21 (gender bending)
- 現実もたまには嘘をつく | L22 (cross dressing, but no LGBT characters)
- 放浪息子 | L25 (transgender coming of age, but probably harder than what you want right now)
- カノジョになりたい君と僕 | L23 (transgender, easier than the above series)
- お兄ちゃんはおしまい! | L22 (gender swap, easy except for the occasional otaku stuff)
I’ll vouch for 先輩はおとこのこ. I have read 8 volumes so far and I really enjoyed it. I also think it is the choice from your list that lines up best with your interests/desired level.
Only downside for a beginner is that there is no furigana. But since you were able to read ぼくは麻理のなか, I think you can probably handle the language difficulty.
I have been in Japan for less than one week and there’s already a typhoon, so I need some reading material to keep me busy this weekend. I’ll probably read more than one of these, but I’ll go in whatever order the poll ends up in.
I will say that part of my problem with it is the sparseness of text in the bound volume format. I’ve completed manga series that I was lukewarm on when they were convenient and cheap to read. While I don’t generally care for the infinite scroll webtoon format, I actually would have preferred to read it in that format in this case. But unfortunately that version isn’t easily accessible outside of Japan. If it was I probably would have binged the entire series in 1-2 weeks.
You made me realize that it’s a LINE manga… I absolutely hate that app.
That severely cools down my interest for the series
Why do you hate it?
Navigation/menus were really bad at the time I tried it, plus it is riddled with ads.
(I mean, so is the LINE app, so not much of a surprise here, I guess)
I guess that doesn’t imply anything for the quality of the manga per se, but I just distrust them due to the general vibes (?) of the company.
Only downside for a beginner is that there is no furigana
Thanks a lot!!! No furigana doesn’t really bother me, I use Yomitan and eventually I pick up on the Kanji
はなにあらし is one of my recommended early series fwiw.
Amazing! Just favourited :))) <3
So I finished the audiobook
So now, the option is to jump to the next volume, or try something different:
What Next:
There’s only one option.
