2024 Bingo Reading Challenge ☑️

prompt ideas:

  • Read something suggested by the site you buy content from that you would normally ignore
  • Read something from the free samples/something you can read for free (such as syosetsu, kakuyomu, tonarinoyj, etc)
  • Read something nostalgic
  • Read something with elderly main characters
  • Read something wholesome
  • Read something non fiction
  • Read something chosen by someone else for you (can be from the forum or IRL people in your life, maybe someone random working in a nearby café  )

I really like the idea of choosing books with unhelpful covers and having someone who can’t read Japanese choose one for me amongst them and have them predict for me what it’s about

If you end up doing that, the results should be reported here of course:

I used to do something similar with kanji to people, my cousins can’t stand kanji because of me :joy: :joy: :joy:

Just FYI, you can’t remove likes after a short period anyway, so that would not have been a viable approach. Poll is definitely the way to go.

Whoa, I never knew that. Do you know what the time limit is, out of curiosity?

I tried looking but couldn’t find the Discourse setting. I think it’s on the order of minutes though, maybe 5-10.

Expanding a bit on randomly selecting a book from your 積読/TBR pile. Some people have so many books in their 積読 that a lucky draw (automated or not) might be impractical. So here are some prompts that could be randomized instead:

  • Read the book you bought the earliest
  • Read the latest book you bought
  • Read the book published most recently
  • Read the book published earliest
  • Read the book with the shortest title
  • Read the book with the longest title
  • Read the book with the most colourful cover
  • Read the book with the simplest cover
  • Read a book with warm colours on the cover
  • Read a book with cool colours on the cover
  • Read the book with the darkest cover
  • Read the book with the lightest cover
  • Read a book by a male author
  • Read a book by a female author
  • Read the next book in a series you have started (if applicable)
  • Read a book that you don’t remember why you bought/what it’s about
  • Read the longest book in your pile
  • Read the shortest book in your pile
  • Read the easiest book in your pile
  • Read the hardest book in your pile
  • Start the book you hesitate to read the most

(I’m sure there’s many more I can think of later)

Several of these could also be bingo prompts (or even are already), but they can also just be prompts to help select a book randomly.

We might need a random prompt generator from all of these (as in from the entire topic, not just this comment) that is completely separate from the bingo :joy:

This is actually super useful lol not even just for the readers here, but in general for frequent readers :joy::joy::joy:

Hmm how would you like me to enter all these to the prompt list??

Maybe one prompt like “select a book from your TBR with a randomly picked option” and then list these up in a separate graphic that goes with the bingo board? These are all pretty useful for anyone stuck on what to read next so it’d be cool to keep them for reference somewhere.

Another prompt suggestion which I’m not sure if it’s been mentioned:

  • Join/Participate in a Book Club

I saw something to the effect of “read a book from one of the book clubs (past or present)”. Close, but technically different.

Edit: it was “read something with the book club tag”

I see. I wouldn’t really group past and an on-going book club in the same prompt as it feels it’s different.

A past book-club feels easier than an on-going one.

Maybe split them into two prompts?

That really depends, I guess. I don’t think there’s much difference between a completed club and one that is one or two weeks away from the end.
I guess you could read a book club nomination (so, no club at all) though.

A thought about the book club prompt:

I’m happy to add join an ongoing book club to the list since we already have read something with a book club tag and I hadn’t thought about it yet - but we want the prompts to be really broad so any level could join and some learners may not be at a high enough level yet for the book clubs we have at the moment.

Thoughts??

Just include WK clubs; they have the absolute beginner club.
It technically requires to make an account, but it’s free…

that’s what I was thinking as well… at least with including past bookclubs, people could go at their own pace.

I keep forgetting WK exists.

Hmm ok, I think I will just add it to the prompt list for now and if it gets selected then we can cross that bridge when we come to it! It feels kinda weird to direct people to book clubs in a different forum (I have never used WK forums myself but I am also not a beginner) but I think it’s more likely beginners would be over there so maybe it’s not a huge deal.

Let’s see either way!! :slightly_smiling_face:

Prompt suggestion: Read something that is historical fiction

They were only for reference, not bingo prompt suggestions. We can have them somewhere to help with the random selection or not. I just posted them as they occurred to me.
