Alligator's learning log [korean + spanish]

Hello all! If you saw my first attempt at creating this thread, apologies! I’ve been aware of Natively for a while but just found out about the forums so I’m learning as I go lol

I have a chronic case of stop-and-go language learning and it’s driving me insane. I need SOME type of accountability and commiseration, even if it is just strangers on the internet. I like the look/vibes of other people’s learning logs here so let’s give this a go. Everyone else here looks pretty advanced language-wise but I’ll use that as motivation!! I’ll be able to read the books I want to read in Korean someday too!!

I DREAM of the day I can get past the boring beginner content in both languages, but I tend to do a little bit of comprehensible input for a few days/weeks and fall off, then go back to where I started. I’m literally sisyphus and it’s killing me.

korean backstory

moved to korea in 2019 to teach english with ZERO knowledge of korean language or culture (didn’t listen to kpop or watch kdramas, I was literally just a dumb college grad who wanted to live and work abroad). fell in LOVE with the language and committed to studying a lot while I was there. had to leave pretty suddenly and basically against my will in 2020 due to a family crisis (and covid didn’t help) and it’s the biggest regret of my life not returning once the family stuff settled down. tried to improve my korean over the six years since I left but haven’t made any meaningful #gains.

spanish backstory

took 2 years in high school and 1 semester in college. I swear I retained nothing and hated it. now that I’m US bound for the foreseeable future (have a license in the medical field and love my job/the stability so I’m not becoming a digital nomad anytime soon) most of my vacations will be to spanish speaking countries and wouldn’t it be so cool to actually speak the language of the country im visiting!!! and also yeah medical field- I simply need to know spanish and frankly it’s embarrassing that I don’t.

Discovering dreaming spanish/comprehensible input method was really a game changer for me; however, I do not see myself going ‘purist’ with that method since I love a bit of structure beyond time spent.

Goals for now:

  • Refold’s anki decks for Spanish and Korean just to grease the gears. Might mess around with Pimsleur or Paul Noble for a bit until I get to the all target language listening level.
  • Work my way through Talk to Me in Korean’s catalogue because I love checking items off a list. I’m definitely not fully reading every book or doing any of the fill in the blank activities, but most of their books can be found on zlib and they provide free audio on their website, so I just listen to the example sentences and follow along in the book, that way I ‘absorb’ the grammar through lots of example sentences instead of english explanations.
  • do 20-30 minutes of whatever TTMIK book I’m on followed by 20-30min of comprehensible input (liking the lengualytics website so far for this because I get too distracted on youtube)
  • watch 1 dreaming spanish video a day until it feels less painful.

Comprehensible input as of 25 August 2026:

Korean: 68 hours (not giving myself credit for current knowledge base, this is just my tracked hours) (started tracking April 2025 which gives you a good idea of my (in)ability to stick to something lol #sad)

Spanish: 44 hours (started tracking Feb 2026)

Slow and Steady:

I went back to school May 2025 to further my career which is why my progress will be super slow and stay slow until I graduate July 2027. Time will pass regardless and some progress is better than no progress!!! Hopefully by spring 2028 I’ll have time/money to travel again so I need to get through the noob grind sooner rather than later.

Currently school + work already take up 50 hours a week (not including homework, commute, food, exercise, yadda yadda) and my therapist tells me i need to CHILL OUT with the ‘pressure’ im putting on myself to do other things, but like. I spend so much time every day on twitter and reddit (EMBARRASSING!). like sure I need time to decompress but I can relax while going on walks and watching easy videos in korean/spanish instead of actively rotting my brain. going back to school and trying to actually learn a language made me realize my attention span has been absolutely DESTROYED by my phone/social media so I need to lasso in some self-discipline. with grace and understanding and self-kindness of course.

I plan to do monthly updates!!! Fighting!!

So glad to have you here in the forums! I love seeing other users’ updates so this will be exciting especially since you are learning the same languages as me!

I never planned to follow the Dreaming Spanish purist method, but pure laziness has brought me this far without studying grammar  I keep meaning to but…yeah. My schedule just makes it a lot easier for me to throw on a podcast while driving or doing laundry, skincare, etc.

I think you’re in the right mindset that time will pass anyways, so doing any little bit will help in the long run! I keep telling myself that too but I love results so it’s hard lol. The monthly goal tracking helps me tho-- I only keep very loose goals so it doesn’t stress me out and I don’t really care if I meet it or not…maybe goal isn’t the right word tbh it’s more of a pace I think is reasonable but sometimes it’s just not there ahhahah.

Good luck!

I quite liked Paul Noble for French even though I bounced off Pimsleur. Definitely recommend trying both and seeing which clicks better for you.

Are you doing strict ALG? If not flip the Spanish subs on and I bet it will help on the days your brain is struggling (and since it’s still Spanish, it’s hardly a step backwards).

Definitely recommend enjoying target language brain rot instead  I know so many bad words in French thanks to Instagram

I read your entire learning log before deciding to start my own!! I’m so ready for the day I can put on a mildly interesting spanish podcast and do chores (I’ve tried cuentame and I cannot keep my mind from wandering for the life of me!! I liked a bit of Chill Spanish but as you say in your posts they’re just SO SHORT!!) little by little I’ll get there!

this terrifies me AHHAHAA i have never read back so I have no idea what’s in there seudkjdshf

Good to know someone reads the Spanish bits…I tend to not write too much about it because there’s not much Spanish engagement lol.

Yeah cuentame…sometimes I listened on a higher speed! But it was really just pushing through for me ): maybe videos will be better for now! If you can get to the level for listening to Learn Spanish and Go, I think you’ll be good!! I really enjoyed their catalogue.

I used Paul Noble in the past for French too! Really like the way he organizes things. definitely not doing strict ALG, just want to skew heavily on the comprehensible input side for both languages. I’ll try turning on spanish subs when I get bored, that’ll probably help!

you’re right!! need to pivot my youtube shorts to ES/KR

hjsdgojrioek I’m sorry!!  I simply love reading other people’s journeys! I saw your last update on r/dreamingspanish and that led me here! your learning log was incredibly refreshing/chill after coming from reddit lol too many people in that sub overthink things and it makes ME overthink

I know this resource spreadsheet has Learn Spanish and Go recommended for 400 hours but praying it unlocks for me earlier than that :folded_hands: but yeah I don’t think solo talking podcasts are for me in any language

Nice to meet you @moonalligator! ^o^ Definitely keeping an eye on your log; I love your energy, haha. I attempted to resurrect my own school Spanish a year or two ago, but I ultimately had to throw in the towel; I just wasn’t having fun studying it.

Ah, I’m familiar with that approach. Our Spanish/Korean populations here on Natively are a little low, but we’ve got a few active users hanging around; I’ve found that having like-minded people you can chat with and compare what media you’ve been consuming to be really motivating in pushing forward to stuff you might’ve been too intimidated to move forward on yourself.

If/when you feel comfortable enough and are interested (seems like you’re more focused on listening?), could be worth asking around in those spaces to see if anyone’s interested in doing a book club; those are great for pushing yourself and learning new things! Honestly, even if you are more focused on listening, could be fun to set up a movie club. There’s one on the Japanese side of the forums…

Incidentally, I did want to make sure you knew that we have a subforum for learning logs. You’re more than welcome to keep yours here, but we’ve got the subforum set to that users have to be logged in to see it, so it helps prevent bots and scrapers and the like from peeking in uninvited. I think you should be able to move your log if you’re interested, but if you’re not sure how/don’t think you can, I can move it for you.

Hello thank you for the warm welcome!! I noticed there’s this Absolute Beginner Book Club for Korean that I’ll definitely be active in once my reading level gets a bit higher!

Hello and welcome!! I was so happy to see you log, I love reading logs, we need more logs

I look forward to your updates both for Korean and Spanish! I know keeping a log was very helpful to me in that it made me aware of how much I get done each week / month. It’s easy to overlook when you are “only” watching a video here and there, but when you start logging them you realise they really do add up.

Feel free to post a message in the book club thread, or in [Poll] Korean Book Clubs whenever you feel ready to start, I know I’d be happy to join and probably more learners. The club is not very active lately, but we are always here, lurking, waiting for someone to show interest

August mini-recap

Mini-recap that covers the last week of August!! Don’t worry, I’ll only do monthly updates going forward. :))

I swear half the fun of language learning is finding/compiling resources, but I need to be IMMERSING instead of reading REDDIT THREADS. Which is why I’m going to try~ to be faithful to TTMIK. I know they get a bad rap for having “too much English” but the fun thing about having a Big Adult Brain is I can skip over all the English!! I’ll list most of their books with the associated levels below and that’s the rough order of how I’ll go about it.

TTMIK LEARNING PLAN

Roughly in order of their stated difficulty on TTMIK

Korean: 70 hours

up 2 hours since last week so hell yeah!!

Brushing off the cobwebs!! Feels a bit silly starting with TTMIK Level 1 but it’s nice to refamiliarize myself with the basics and there were a few new vocab words in there so that’s fun! Onto Level 2 now. I’m trying to go through these as quickly as I can and not overthink things or try to bludgeon grammar points in my head. Just want to get a feel for everything.

I thiiiink I said in my OG post but I’ll reiterate here: I’m not reading everything in the TMMIK books or doing the activities (except for the occasional matching because I loooooove matching), but just following along with the bits they provide audio for! That way I’ll learn the vocab and grammar in context with correct pronunciation. Even though almost everything on TMMIK is paywalled now (remember when their podcast was free for all levels?? We didn’t know how good we had it) they at least provide ALL AUDIO for EVERY BOOK on their website! Book Audio

I also started reading 문화가 있는 한국어 읽기 1 because of the great reviews for the whole series and each book is supposed to coincide with a TOPIK level. Not going to try to plow through these, but just reading up until it feels a bit hard then will come back to it later. There’s a youtube playlist with all the audio too so I like to read along to make sure my internal pronunciation is correct!

Doing a few of the stories on 두루책방 as well! It’s fun to see the community’s level rankings on Natively vs their grouping on the website.

Plugging along with the Refold anki deck, doing 5 new cards a day. In total I spend max 5 minutes on it a day.

Spanish: 47.5 hours

+3.5 hours!

Just working my way through all the free Dreaming Spanish videos, sorted by easiest! I’m up to the mid 20’s now. Going to keep watching all their free videos until they feel too hard, then will switch to some beginner videos on youtube for a bit. Since I don’t have a lot~ of free time atm I can’t justify a Premium subscription quite yet. I’ll probably do Premium for just one month over winter break when I have time to do a bit of bingeing!

Not making much headway on the Refold anki deck, it just feels painful compared to doing anki for Korean. May just keep Spanish on a strictly CI basis until I feel the urge to start reading.

Language Transfer lessons 1-22! This feels like my TTMIK equivalent lol Just letting the lessons ‘wash’ over me and not trying to think too hard about it. After I finish this I think I’ll give Chill Spanish and Cuentame another try!

School + Life

First week of fall semester complete! Trying to fit TWO languages between my assignments feels insane but hey whatever. I’m trying to look at language learning as motivation for getting my schoolwork done and it’s working! My goal is to make SOME contact with both languages a day, even if it’s just a few anki cards or 5min of DS. On 12-hour workdays I can fit in 15 minutes of Korean CI at lunchtime and I’m always proud of myself for those 15 lol MOST days I can manage 1 or 2 TTMIK lessons before I’m falling asleep with kobo in hand and I’m proud of that as well.

:south_korea: Korean CI Shout-out of the Month

Every month I’ll recommend a CI creator. I’m asking/begging you to like a few of their videos (and maybe leave an encouraging comment!!) even if you’re not learning Korean or watch much CI lol. There’s a lot of small creators and I just want to show them support so they’ll keep making stuff!!

Yejun Korean - YouTube (currently 9 videos with 134 subscribers)

EDIT to add:

you’re looking at one of the two New User of the Month!! didn’t know this was a thing but felt honored when I got the notification, it’s very cute. now bow down, i guess.

No worries, do then when they feel comfortable to you, haha. We’re always here to check in!

Ain’t that the truth. I’ve got a nice large folder of shared Anki decks I’ll probably never use 90% of, but it’s a lot of fun finding them!

Oh gross; you’re going great considering all that. Don’t burn yourself out, give yourself a break when needed!

Oh I think that’s a new channel for me..I recently found Yuno Korean and he was
at about 400 subscribers when I subbed and now he’s up to 3k so it feels like he’s doing alright. Still recommend him if you haven’t found him yet, he’s got a good sense of humor.
