📚 本好きの下剋上 🪱 Arc 2 Offshoot Reading Thread

At some point I’m moving. Probably next month, but that’s still up in the air so it doesn’t make a lot of sense to plan around that just yet. At least it’s an in town move, so it’s not going to be that terrible of a move.

Not to jinx you, but

That’s what I thought when I moved like 10 miles down the road two years ago. Our movers never showed up, and we had to scramble to find someone available on the weekend. Everything was turned off by that point, of course, and I had a trip to Japan scheduled the next week… I lost some years by the end of it all. :pensive: Hoping yours goes better, haha!

The moving company we’re moving with is great (they moved us into this place), so we hopefully are all good. Also it probably wouldn’t be the end of the world if we had to push back the move in date since our landlord is selling but doesn’t have a buyer lined up.

But sheesh, just hearing about that took some years off my life :joy:

Oh, this exists too. The more I scroll Natively forums the more gems I discover.

I’m 3 volumes of the Junior edition away from you guys. In normal edition that’d be the short stories in the end of vol3 and vol4 you’ve read here.

I guess as this is informal club, I could pick it up whenever my schedule allows it and start a super casual catch up as my first new year resolution?

Yep, it’s informal so just feel free to work through it at your own pace and feel free to comment on here for anything related, asking questions for clarification on parts or such. (I’ve not started yet as I’m not quite at that level but I’ve got them to read once I’m ready)

Of course! And we’d love to hear your thoughts questions here! @shitsurei and I have been discussing starting volume 5 sometime this month, but there’s absolutely no deadline or real formal schedule anyone needs to adhere to.

:fearful::fearful::fearful: (Lol)

What happened to the breezing room you were going to give ppl in BL club before F&B starts&picks up pace? :joy:

Well, it’s just been me and shitsurei reading 本好き so far, and if she’d rather wait until after F&B is done she should definitely let me know. If you’d like to join us you’re welcome to, it just didn’t sound like you were quite caught up enough to read volume 5 yet.

I can do 本好き easily since it’s with an audiobook. I do want to finish the arc we’re on, but I’m also not opposed to waiting. (Myne is never high on my list of must reads )

Let’s plan to read this month, then; better to keep steam than lose it entirely imo.

Just a heads up that @shitsurei and I are planning on starting volume 5 on January 5 for any interested joinees!

Starting volume 4 so expect random likes coming in when I get to you comments!

I will copy paste eefara’s read-more naming convention to avoid confusion with you guys reading vol 5 (and to avoid typing the chapter names…)

Vol. 4, プロローグ & 誓いの儀式と側仕え

What do you MEAN we could’ve known Ferdinand’s name from the very beginning of Arc 2?!

The Prologue was a hard read. Cartoonish villain much 神殿長? The way 神官長 had all answers ready to handle his very annoying boss was painful to read. I like that we see him already see value in マイン and be aware that she’s got stuff to learn (and add a そば使い to support her).

Prayer was harder though. It was world building and I wasn’t sure how much of this requires notes for the future (so I took none), but it also feels like something I would’ve obsessed over if I was reading translation.

Now, common sense issues with the Temple are starting already and this is only the first minutes of her new job. My condolences, Myne.
(Lutz is getting cool work already, yay!!)

Awesome, glad to have you! I’ll be reading your volume 4 comments with interest! (And to refresh myself before starting vol. 5, haha.)

Awesome, thank you! That’s one downside of a multi-volume thread like this, but I figure as long as we’re all careful, we can hopefully keep book thoughts from mixing. :+1: Shame the chapters aren’t explicitly numbered…

I find all the non Myne chapters to be quite a bit harder. I guess because she’s still a kid. Maybe once she gets older all the chapters will be that hard :weary_cat:

It begins, @shitsurei. :eyes:

Vol. 5, プロローグ & ヴィルマをください

Okay, first off, I have to get the obvious out of the way: why is this cover so cool? There’s a white lion with wings in the background! I’m going to be extremely upset if this is just from…

the picture book Myne’s going to make for her new baby sibling! :eyes: I wonder if Urano had siblings? I feel like she mentioned she was an only child, but maybe I’m just imagining things? Now Myne’s going to be the middle child. Just think: to this child, Myne will always have been a weirdo. :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

So it sounds like Myne’s getting two new 側仕え, but the more interesting part was the 神官長 basically saying she was essentially going to be forced to be married when she came of age? As in, I take it, noble suitors literally will refuse to leave her alone until she picks someone?

Re

More like a noble suitor will order her/her parents to marry her to him (and saying no will not be an option). Basically the scene with the 神殿長 redux. Without the help of someone with power, that won’t end well.

Edit: I’m saying that from a general standpoint, I don’t remember that discussion in particular.

No, that make sense. Thanks!

Re: プロローグ & ヴィルマをください

I was so confused for a second bc we left the last book with Corinna pregnant, and then it was like Effa is pregnant, and she’s talking to Lutz’s mom and I’m like, I thought Effa was Myne’s mom.. wtf help! It all got sorted out, but I was rather confused for a bit.

Despite literally nodding off halfway though ヴィルマをください (), it feels like this book is moving a lot faster than previous books started. Do we finally have enough background established that we can get into plot right away? Or are we going to come to a grinding halt once we’re picking out the developmentally appropriate colors for the 絵本 in about 6 chapters

I didn’t notice this thread before. I’ve been using Honzuki for “read along to the audiobook” practice and happen to be 37% through volume 5.

At this point I’ve stopped paying attention to the details of these “make the thing” chapters and am idly letting them pass by. I realized that I zone out or skim during boring parts in English books, so I’m regarding this as helping develop that ability in Japanese too.

Vol 4, 巫女のお仕事

So first of all 巫女のお仕事 felt really long and by the end I almost forgot what I wanted to say about the beginning (kyaa ベンノ is all dressed up! マルク is too! The way they freaked out seeing マイン walk around looking rich was hilarious)

So yeah, back to the beginning.
側仕えは側にいるのが仕事らしく - who could’ve though!

It’s painful to look at フラン. Sorry, buddy. You’re an older reliable guy that was supposed to be sent to help マイン out but you’re more of a lost dog wanting your (ex) master to notice you and it’s just painful to see.

ダリア is really… Arrogant. ギル is angry for other reasons, but ダリア specifically should really be doing better at hiding her evil spy nature. I appreciate how マイン just shut down her thought process about this unfortunate child and moved on with her life. That will not be the end of it, but that was a very realistic reaction to someone (1) extremely offensive to you and (2) so unfortunate that you don’t know how to address it without hurting them even more.

So yeah, because I can definitely understand マイン’s approach to the horrible subordinates (as well as her desire to just do her thing ignoring the human interactions part of this circus) so being called out by ルッツ hurt me too. And only a couple of weeks ago I read his short story from the end of Part 1 where he’s thinking how his 常識 doesn’t work on his job and how he now understands how hard must’ve been for マイン to adjust.

A personal opinion of an exhausted OL out with a cold on the author’s optimistic approach to adjusting to people in different environments: この常識人め。。。もうイヤだよ
