Yesterday I listened to just under 2 hours, it was entirely me finishing the movie コーヒーが冷めないうちに | L25 and listening to more of the audiobook for 死神と天使の円舞曲 | L29
Oooh, I didn’t realise there was a film version of コーヒーが冷めないうちに…and it’s available on Netflix Japan. I’ll be watching that too!
Tried out a few audiobooks with very mixed results
- ポーション頼みで生き延びます! 1 | L28 - liked the narration style, and fast-paced speech, but my interest plummeted when I discovered it’s a reincarnation isekai. I’m already reading 2 of those (わたおし and 天転), and just not in the mood apparently.
- 夏へのトンネル、さよならの出口 | L29 - seemed possibly interesting, but wasn’t sure I was in the mood. Narration pacing was slow for the preview
- 君の名は | L29 - this was a poor choice. Too much vocab I don’t know (despite having read the manga and seen the movie), and the narrators don’t wait long enough between small scenes changes
- 裏世界ピクニック | L32 - having the most success with this so far. Right balance of interest, some unfamiliar vocab, but not enough to hinder my understanding of the story. I’m still in the portion I’ve already read, in my lessons. So I’m listening while doing other things. Wonder how it will feel once I’m past there (or maybe I’ll intentionally stay behind?)
Considering trying 魔女の宅急便 | L25… But In general, I’m not sure audiobooks without text are a good fit for me. Unless it’s very comprehensible (like ひげひろ | L26), I have to really intensely listen. I get really bored if that’s all I’m doing, but then if I start doing other things, I can’t focus well enough.
I especially don’t like the inability to easily look things up or Intuit the meaning from kanji (I get that that’s part of the point, but it feels unhelpful for vocab acquisition, which is probly my main challenge for me in listening… Besides occasionally not recognizing a word or two I already know in writing)
I’ll see how 裏世界ピクニック feels as I go on, I guess. Worst case, I’ll just drop the audiobook, and stick with the radio shows or try some of the stuff ppl have been linking here.
Haha it’s quite touching! I’m considering listening to the rest of it…Let me know what you think if you read/listen to it!
Considering it’s in a language I don’t speak, I don’t think I’ll be doing that any time soon. But if I ever learn Korean it’ll be a goal
August 8th:
Finished 小学館ジュニア文庫 女優猫あなご | L22?? today. Another 3:30 under my belt.
Edit: this book is about the cat that “played” the cat in 猫侍 | L30?? I might just have to watch this. I have no idea what it’s about but that title…
Same here for me. :S I’m hoping it’s just an artifact of not being quite there with my listening skills. I don’t generally have issues sitting still for movies/TV shows/YT, but I really have to mentally be “there” when listening to audio books so I don’t drift off.
Another one to add to my children’s book pile. Thank you! And speaking of…
I listened to レンタルロボット from your list, shitsurei! Thank you!
OH LOL okay maybe one day;;
This happens to me too when it’s something challenging. I try to listen to hard stuff in the morning when my brain is more fresh rather than at night to try and help counteract this.
I’ve experimented a lot with listening and reading and my personal conclusion is that audiobooks are kinda worthless for me when it comes to vocab acquisition. If I’m sitting down and listening and it’s just 1-2 words I don’t understand here or there I will look them up and save them, but I think I’ve barely ever learned any vocab from free flow audiobook listening. I just treat it as a way to consolidate my existing knowledge and start associating speech sounds with the passive vocab in my head.
Day 8:
I’ve kind of dropped the ball today, my listening has been about an hours worth while playing “Rise of the Rōnin”. I did have a lesson for an hour where I was mostly listening to my tutor speak (since I dropped the ball there too and struggled with even the simplest of sentences, no idea why ).
Not sure if any of that actually counts though, so since there is only an hour left before I need to sleep, I will try to get something extra in or today is a lost case.
Started listening to medium 霊媒探偵城塚翡翠 | L32 purely because I’m tired and didn’t want to look for anything I had easier (that’s tired brain logic for you). I was also curious how well I’d understand the first couple of parts of chapter 1, given I’ve read the book before. Answer: okay, but not great. If I didn’t know what was supposed to be happening I’d probably be pretty lost.
Man, 96 minutes on average everyday is really hard for me to hit. :S 60 minutes feels far more doable where I’m at unfortunately, but then that glorious 50 hours in one month is out of reach…
Can you do 1 hr per day, and then make up the time on the weekends?
In theory, I probably could. That would have to be a huge chunk of my weekend, though. Rounding that 96 minutes to 90 for simplicity’s sake, that’s 2.5 hours I’d need to make up from the week, in addition to the 90 minutes already required per weekend day. Definitely doable, but at this point it’s not something I honestly want to do.
Not making the 50 hours isn’t a huge deal; I’m already listening to more stuff more consistently than I was before, which is a definite win. I guess it’s just frustrating to have to consider that so early in the month, haha.
Was able to listen to another 30 minutes from this video:
I think I only need 16 more minutes today, so I’m going to try to push through for them.
Since we’re a week in now, I just want to encourage everyone to keep at it and do your best!
I have the added benefit of already trained ears so I can listen to things a lot more casually, but I also tend to get more listening done on the weekends.
I also do a lot of short chunks of audiobooks. 20 minutes while doing chores in the morning, 20ish minutes prepping dinner, etc. Not having to set aside ‘listening time’ and instead ‘listen while folding laundry’ or ‘listen while prepping veggies’ works wonders for getting those minutes in.
I got about an hour and a half today. I could listen more but I’m in a reading mood so I’d rather do that since I’m not doing too bad on hours so far.
More of the 死神 book (third one in the series and honestly my least favorite, I’m not enjoying this story line) and a tiny bit of YouTube.
August 8th - Total 2 hours 30 minutes
さらば、欲望 資本主義の隘路をどう脱出するか 幻冬舎新書 | L40?? - 1 hour and 10 minutes (finished)
空中ブランコ | L30 - 10 minutes (lol - this was just not the vibe on my commute home today)
「チームの生産性をあげる。業務改善士が教える68の具体策」- 1 hour and 10 minutes
I feel like all of us in this thread are simultaneously hitting a wall and struggling.
I had another really long day at work and my brain rot level is at maximum level, but I also have a toxic personality trait where I don’t let myself give up on arbitrary challenges I set for myself even when I’m busy (omg throwback to anyone who has been on the forums for a while and remembers me studying for the TOPIK last year during an eventful period in my life and then ended showing up the day after the test by mistake and missing it ). I’m going to do it!!! Everyone else here is also going to hit their goal too, ok?!
When I am tired, I really love listening to self-help or business books for some reason. They’re like my “easy” comfort books since there is no plot to follow and a lot of them are super basic/repetitive, so if you zone out you never really miss anything. Just someone speaking on and on and offering you nuggets of random knowledge and big brain vibes but no plot to follow. The vocab range used is also way smaller than non-fiction books about specific topics, so it’s easy to learn. So, I started 「チームの生産性をあげる。業務改善士が教える68の具体策」(why are the titles of these so long haha - and no, there is no link because I don’t feel like adding that to my natively shelf ) and a lot of the 68の具体策 are low key useful. Some are pretty relevant for things I’m doing at work so I will certainly use some of them. Thanks again audiobook.jp for your random 聴き放題 offerings enriching my life.
I will stress over keeping book club schedules and my partner likes to say, “oh are the book club police gonna come get you if you don’t finish this reading on time?”
… Usually while I’m half asleep on the couch bemoaning that I must finish a reading before bed. Because goals and stuff.
(空中ブランコ is never the mood)
They will. That’s exactly what will happen.
