I think I’m done for the night. 1:55 for today.
2 eps of 愛天使伝説ウェディングピーチ S1 | L30??, 3 of Card Captor Sakura, 25 mins of 放課後ミステリクラブ 1金魚の泳ぐプール事件 | L22. I’m at 9/10 hours so I think we’ll need to make a goals adjustment tomorrow.
I’m being seen in this thread in a way that feels very accusatory
Trying to keep pace, only 1.5 hours behind . It does seem a bit silly to not count any hours that aren’t a part of my ‘dedicated listening’, but I do think I need this dedicated listening to really improve… in normal conversations so much usually goes over my head, it’s more survival mode.
Oooh, thank you for the extra words of encouragement. We will rise above sleep!
I’m pretty sure this is the only reason I know any Japanese.
Same stress over here, haha. I’ve talked about it so often to my sister that I think she’s beginning to think that there are book club police tucked away in my apartment somewhere, haha.
which, imo, is absolutely vital if you ever want to have a conversation. You need far less vocabulary for your own use but being able to understand your conversation partner without them having to dumb down everything makes for a much nicer experience for the native - thus making it more likely they will want to talk to you again.
If it’d be easy, it wouldn’t be a challenge. but afterwards you know that up to 60 minutes daily is feasible and you can just keep up the habit.
And they will jail all your other unread books and block all social media from your phone until you are back on track with your bookclubs…
August 9th:
Watched 3 episodes of ゴーストハント S1 | L26?? in preparation for movie night on Sunday where we will watch the next 3. Enjoying this quite a bit so far.
60 minutes
I also learned today that the novels to the series have audiobooks (but no kindle).
Yesterday I just did extensive listening as I couldn’t focus for long periods of time. Today has been a bit better, managed to do 7 Japanese with Shun podcasts so came in at just over an hour.
Back on track today
Most of the episodes were about his first backpacking trip.
2 episodes of Wedding Peach and 5 episodes of CCS, plus I finished 放課後ミステリクラブ 1金魚の泳ぐプール事件 | L22 this afternoon for 2:50. I’m now at 11.8/10 hours
Since we’re about 1/3 through the month I’ll up my goal to 40 hours to make it an actual challenge. I don’t think it’ll be too hard if I don’t totally slack.
I only listened to about 40 minutes yesterday Entirely the 死神 book with the plot line I’m not loving, but we’re finally moving a bit on that towards (hopefully) the conclusion and then maybe the latter half of the book will be a different case? But if it’s 4.5 more hours of this same story…
I’m not sure I’ll do amazingly better today as I’m a bit busy, but I’ll try
First 8 videos and watched each one 4 times. Once just to listen, once to see how much I didn’t understand and needed to look up, then once more trying to understand the words using the subtitles and a final time just for to see again how much I understood by just listening after all of that.
I’ll get only a little time tomorrow and Monday so trying to bank additional hours so far and make up for the hours I missed the other day when I was just passively listening. Hopefully I’ll get another longer session on Tuesday and then a few hours again on Wednesday before going back to work.
right? it’s like having a friend tell you a story… or that’s how it feels to me… he is just very easy to listen to. The 60 minutes are acutally 2 hours, but since I speed him up, I only count the actual listening time.
Catching up somewhat… I’m at 13 hrs so far, when I should be at 17 (1.61 hrs / day = ~50 / month). The results have been a bit different than I expected.
So far my total times are:

So that’s way more anime than I was expecting. Though 2 hrs of that was audio commentary. I discovered that the commentary for Carnival Phantasm is very variable. Some episodes were great, some were meh, and one or two, I just Nope’d out. I ended up watching almost everything twice (with and without commentary). Interestingly, the “seasons” on the Blu-ray don’t match the seasons listing here.
I probably should be doing more audiobooks, but they’re hard without text / are the easiest thing to procrastinate. I’m trying SAO 1. Thankfully the chapters are pretty short too (18-40 min). Too much unknown vocab. Maybe I’ll try 裏世界ピクニック again, or just go for the radio shows. It was kind cool trying audiobooks for things I might not otherwise read. I wish わたおし had an audiobook, since I’ve already seen the anime, and read the manga.
Anime are an easy fit, b/c they happen in 23 minute chunks, and I can also mark them as Watched on Natively, assuming I haven’t seen them already. Now that I’m caught up w/ ガルクラジオ again, I can start to try out some of the other radio shows too! Let’s see if I get ahead of my hrs, by the end of the weekend.
Didn’t do great today. Watched an episode of Wedding Peach and listened to the first 15 minutes of 華麗なる探偵アリス&ペンギン | L22. Although I’m pretty sure I was falling asleep towards the end so I might need to go back a bit.
On the plus side, the reason why I didn’t listen that much today (bedsides my weekly D&D game) is that I read a manga this afternoon instead of listening, so I’m willing to give myself a pass. 12.3/40
