August 11th:
Listened to 4 hours of ゴーストハント1 旧校舎怪談 | L35
Very accessible, but it might also be because I have seen the corresponding anime episodes. (It’s currently graded as L35 which seems hight to me.)
1 book = 3 anime episodes and the anime follows the plot surprisingly closely.
Will be watching the next 3 episodes of the anime later today with some natively peeps, so that will add another 60 minutes to today’s total.
Will add the anime time after watching and the book time once it’s finished.
Got over the 16 hurdle thx to ぼっち and ささ恋 radio… Which means I’m still an hr or so behind today’s goal. I feel a bit weird fully counting those, since I was having near sleep experiences at the time. I will avoid doing listening after 2am in the future.
裏世界ピクニック is working well so far… I’ll aim to finish the chapter today, even though that puts me slightly ahead of my lesson progress. That will let me evaluate whether it’s worth reading ahead in general, or not
Update: I made it past 18, thx to AKB0048. I’ll have to see if I can get some extra listening in later
I’m doing the same. Walking on the treadmill while I watch stuff.
Hopefully I don’t stop walking once this challenge is over and I’m not listening as much.
If we do a monthly thing, would people be interested in doing a bingo-esque theme for the month? Like one of the things you listen to has to satisfy the theme? For my ADHD brain at least, just listening is gonna get old.
I’m not currently listening while on the treadmill (although mostly because I’m still recovering from probably-covid), but I’d also be happy to record treadmill minutes/distance of people wanna have accountability for walking while listening.
If people want to make this a regular thing, I say have at it
I’m personally not inclined towards bingo for this as it wouldn’t work with how I find listening to work for me, but I do incorporate listening into my walks quite a bit, so if people found it helpful to have walking stats and listening stats that’s an easy column to add to the wiki. I also think bingo categories could be proposed and people could follow it or not at their discretion.
FWIW, I’m not feeling ‘owner-y’ about this, so if someone has Big Ideas and would like to run it from September I can pass the torch
Did today’s again in the treadmill. Specified AM because I might do a PM run. Have to take the chance while I’m still in holidays, as it will most likely reduce later.
As for doing the monthly thing, I don’t really mind being Bingo or not. Probably doing it optional opt-in is the best approach.
I’ve started a list to keep track of which audiobooks I’ve been listening to, as well as notes to myself for each one. Just wanted to post it here in case anyone looking for something new wanted to check! It’s pretty short now, but I’m sure it’ll keep growing.
I’m at 20.4%, just around where need to be. I discovered that listening to new parts of 裏世界ピクニックis beneficial. But it still requires solid focus, and since I have trouble focusing, I won’t go any further ahead of the book in the future. Which means audiobooks will likely be a very minimal amount of any future listening. (This is inspiring me to do more audio + book reading in the future tho)
My non-anime hours will just have to come from radio shows and drama CDs then. For drama CDs I can think of 暁のヨナ, ガルクラ, 五等分の花嫁 (totally forgot I own those!!), ダンまち, よるクラ (might still be too soon), 犬夜叉, 薬屋のひとりごと, and All Around Type Moon for a start!
It seems so, at least for vol 11(?) - but it’s kinda hard to make sense of what’s what, on a brief YouTube search. If I get more concrete sources I’ll let you know
After I finish listening to 放課後ミステリクラブ 1金魚の泳ぐプール事件 | L22 (and I hopefully should be done tomorrow), I’m considering switching tactics to picking a book, listening to a chapter, re-listening to the chapter while reading along, then re-listening to the chapter audio-only one last time. That’s a lot of listening practice, but I imagine you get sick of the book real fast, haha.
Has anyone done this, and can speak to pros and cons of the method? Is it more advisable to do this with a book you’ve already read vs. one you haven’t? Or vice versa? I feel like this should be a good way to improve my listening, but I don’t have much to back that up beyond “wow that’s a lot of listening”. I think @cat mentioned they’d done something similar?
The thought is I’d do this exercise with a higher-level book, mid 20s to low 30s. My audio-only listening level is probably hovering somewhere around L20, and even then I’m not getting 100%. Would it be better to do this with a book closer to my actual listening level, though? Any thoughts and opinions are welcome.
Now I’ll have to decide if I jump to the next book or try to finish 転生したらスライムだった件 1 | L34.
I can tell you I have not gone that hard core in, but I did read on my own, then read along while listening and it got old fast. I can’t imagine a 3rd run would be very easy to deal with unless you really really love the material you are working with.
August 12th:
Listened to 4 short stories from the ものものがたり series today (on audible). Author is an Akutagawa prize winner and I really enjoyed them, even though 1&3 are imo better than 2&4.
I accidentally read them out of order but since they are not connected it didn’t matter.
Story 3 ポンペイアンレッド(ものものがたり 3) | L30?? which I read first is already added, the rest should populate soon.
