📚 Book giveaway to support Natively 💙

Hello everyone, I have several Japanese books I’d like to give away in return for a donation to Natively. You can donate to Natively here (Patreon) and here (Ko-fi).

I’d like to keep it as simple as possible, so here’s how it works.

  • I’ll ship within the EU for now
    • If someone knows if it’s cheap to send a flat pack of a couple books from Deutsche Post outside of the EU, then I’ll try it. I just didn’t want to make this complicated with asking people for money for shipping, and there’s a limit to how much I’m willing to pay to ship stuff free.
  • choose books you want (see list below)
  • confirm what you’d like here and then PM me your address
  • once confirmed, make your donation to Natively (suggested 3-10 € per book, but this is up to you!)
  • I’ll ship the book(s) the next Friday/Saturday

I’m not doing any fancy tracking or anything but I’ve only had one package lost my whole life, so should be ok.

Make sure to check all notes and photos about the condition of books as they range from “like new” to “lots of handwriting (pencil)”

I’ll put in representative pictures so you can see what the marking is like in books that have marks.

Book Condition
Manga: SLAM DUNK 1 | L23 New
N4-N3 reader: Reading Road ―多様な日本を読む | L23 Like new
Textbook: Genki 1: An Integrated Course in Elementary Japanese - Workbook | L0 Handwritten notes in pencil (many exercises, check marks on headers and word/kanji lists).
Workbook: Learning Japanese Hiragana and Katakana: A Workbook for Self-Study | L0 Handwritten notes in pencil (up to half of kana practice fields, minority of other exercises)

Genki I

Condition - I think this is still fine to learn with, but check out the notes and photos so you can decide if it’s worth it. It’s a steal, though, compared to buying new. This is the 2nd edition, but I don’t think there are huge differences to the 3rd edition.

  • I didn’t mark up the grammar notes, dialogues, readings, etc aside from a few check marks, so the front half is in pretty good condition
    • I checked off vocab and kanji with various symbols, so see photos if that will annoy you
  • Many of the exercises in the back are completed, see photos
  • You can still get the audio by scanning the bar code in the Oto Navi app, but let me know if you want the CDs and I’ll find them
Hiragana and Katakana book

There are loads of sentences to practice writing and most of those I didn’t do.
Here is what the character writing sheets look like

It’s a new thing for me to part from Japanese books, so it’s not a lot for now, but I’m hoping these can find some happy new homes so don’t be shy!

Reserved post

If nobody else wants it, I‘d be interested in the prefectures book
My secret plan is to visit them all (currently at ~20, I think) and this book might make for an interesting accompaniment

What a fun idea! 20 already is good going.

It would cost the same to ship with 1 other book (aside from Genki) so let me know if you’d like one of the others, too, and I’ll send soon

Then I’ll go for the 2nd grade science book

(Sorry for the late reply, I was a bit out of the loop… will send you a DM)

I would like to read Reading Road ―多様な日本を読む. Please let me know if it’s still available.

Hi, yes, that one is still available! Send me a PM and I’ll mail it.

I updated the table - That leaves Slam Dunk and the Andes-themed survival choose your own adventure.

Well, Genki 1 and the Kana book are still there but I’m guessing people want to scribble in their own books!

I will do that soon, I still need to raise my thrust level.

Forgot that was a thing. (Have not been using the forums here yet)

I think @mitrac could send a PM to you that you can then answer privately.

Oh thanks, I forgot that was a thing!

This is a great idea! I might try it myself for my small collection of duplicates and books I will definitely never read …

Yay! we go to all this trouble to import Japanese books, it feels nice to pass them on. Feel free to hop on here, if it makes sense we could make the home post a wiki, or make your own thread!

Maybe we could get a thread set up in all languages? I have some books I could pass on as well, but in a mix of Korean and Spanish.

Making it a wiki would be great, as I also have some books I’m looking to get rid of (for which I made a thread a while back: Book/Media Swap (North America版))

That’s interesting, @HopeWaterfall I could move this one to the all languages category and modify it, or does anyone want to go ahead and set up a new one?

Also a fun way of doing it!

I’ll wait to see if someone wants to make a new one, otherwise I’ll make the first post a wiki and include columns for language, person, and target shipping regions, and ask Brandon to make it a wiki!

I’m pretty sure there are forum members who have the trust level here to make a wiki (and I might be able to? You might want to check if you do too :slightly_smiling_face:)

It’s your own post. Are you sure you can’t make it a wiki on your own?

I like the spirit of the donate to natively better tbh. Worst case I’ll just sell to book off, but would be great to regift here too

I have to wonder if per language tables wouldn’t be a better way to organize? But I guess you can see as you go

Oh neat is that a thing here? I can’t find a way but if anyone reading this has that trust level, yes, please do make the home post a wiki!

Nice one, yes, I agree that would be easier for scanning

It’s 3 dots > wrench icon > Make into wiki

Your profile has the レギュラー badge when I click your username, which means you should be able to do it for your own post, based on the discourse docs (I have the same level, and can do it for mine)
