Continuing on our challenge to ourselves to boost our listening skills, the December challenge is ready for signups! Set whatever number of hours feels like a reasonable goal for you and feel free to share the things you’re listening to, your successes and setbacks. We’re in this together
All languages welcome!
This post will be a wiki so you can add and update your own hours.
Starting w/ 40 hr goal, but hoping for 60+ like I did in November. Anything that’s spoken audio (with or without accompanying text) counts. Anime eps are counted at 20 min per ep, unless I watched OP & ED. Sry for the dead comment above this… I just really wanted 3rd comment again
I haven’t been keeping a running tally of my time in November so I won’t know where I am until I run my spreadsheet through my python scripts at the end of the month. I had wanted to try and encourage myself to watch more YouTube and do more podcasts, but I think my goals for Nov have suppressed my listening a bit (or maybe I’m just dragging a little on all of my learning habits; nothing to worry about, but less than the past few months). I’m gonna commit to 30 hours, anything listening counts. I’ll just give myself a gold star on days I listen to non scripted TV
Unfortunately because of school, I have only been able to get a total of one episode of Precure on the board this week. However, I have been listening to people play Overcooked 2. No lookups, no creator/fan created subtitles :[ just passive listening. Here’s towaco playlist of Overcooked 2. As a big Overcooked 2 fan, I’ll have to say unfortunately their communication and idea of roles is extremely subpar :/. This week I finished the third video so that’s 25 + (23 + 21 + 22) = 91 minutes of listening.
Edit: I just witnessed one of the players struggle with placing uncooked fish on a plate. I am going to hollar so loud when they figure out that they need to send dishes in order for tips bonuses
Just under halfway through the month, and at 21.5/40 hrs. As usual, the majority is anime & audiobooks.
I’ve gotten some listening (and speaking) in via video games (SAO Last Recollection), but I haven’t been tracking it. I’ve spent 4 hrs on this game so far, and at least 2 of those were cut scenes (story heavy JRPG, 或いは VN with a JRPG attached ), and could have gone to the audiobook. So not tracking is counterproductive. So maybe I’ll just fill in an initial 2, and be sure to time the rest
I haven’t done any background audiobook listening this month, but I should start trying to work that in soon too
Two episodes of the Overcooked 2 playlist. While eating, I was watching #5 with auto-generated subtitles and I felt like I could understand a lot of what they were saying individually but had a hard time making out sentences in real time. Just remembered I have no idea who is who
16.7 from audiobooks and 23.2 from anime, with the remaining portion from game playthroughs on YouTube. Bing the last 3 seasons of マリア様がみてる | L27 really came through for me there Technically I’ve got more hours from SAO Last Recollection, but I didn’t time those, so it would be a guess at best.
Anyway, I’m at 41.4/60 hrs now. So 10 more days to do another 19 hours. Honestly I’m really focused on reading マリア様がみてる | L29 right now (on book 3/37), so I’m not too confident I’ll make the 60. But it’s fine, since I made the original goal, for the 2nd month in a row. Safe to say 40 hrs will be my monthly minimum, going forward.
Decided to revisit my listening comprehension on Genki I using sethclydesdale’s because I had a hard time on some later Genki II exercises so I got 10 + 5 + 6 + 5 + 8 + 10 + 6= 50 minutes and 16 + 10 = 26 minutes from Comprehensible Japanese
I get why Nihongo Con Teppei is so well-liked. Despite his speed, his repeating makes it incredibly much more easier to process. Even when Teppei’s not repeating, it makes me not want to turn back a couple seconds compared to how I deal with other podcasts.
Sakura Tips is beginner but I understand even less than when listening to Nihongo Con Teppei or Japanese with Shun. Unfortunately, transcripts are not available for the first 15~ episodes of Sakura Tips. Does it get easier? Japanese with Shun is not bad but I don’t like how the vocabulary lists posted in the descriptions of his Youtube channel are not available on Pocket Casts.
Are there any other beginner podcasts I should try?
