The history + Vicente backstory was a slog, but the payoff for the rest of the story was so worth it!
Me too! To the point that I thought I had misread something at first!!
I was really impressed honestly, with how well the whole story is going and how well it’s also been researched! I know enough about the history to know it’s doing a good job.
I feel like that’s the magic ingredient for F&B: you get some sometimes long-winded info dumps, but 松岡先生 consistently manages to weave it all together into a fun, believable, generally accurate story. And then in parts where you see the possibility of history going off the rails… It just heightens the excitement!
Progressing at a snail’s pace, but progressing nonetheless
Chapter 2
It’s going to sound strange, but the way Kaito got isekaied was a breath of fresh air. I appreciate the foreshadowing, forethought, and nods to history that went into how he is going back in time, as well as how that impacts Kazuya (especially with Kaito saying to him he thinks if he vanished nobody would sincerely try to find him). Although, lowkey disappointed we didn’t get a scene where the ghost of Francis Drake starts piloting Kaito’s body like gundam lol
Also, and perhaps most importantly, bless the author for sparing me another isekai baby monologue about nursing from their attractive mother!
As a side note, Francis Drake is so cool?? I wound up googling his drum because of this chapter, and enjoyed learning more about it.
Ok, I’m a bit creeped out by Vincente’s moods there.
My first reaction to his whole “I want to protect him and take care of him and that feels like more than a feeling caused by being reminded of my sister” was annoyance.
What a convenient way to get an ally in this situation: no documents, questionable knowledge & looks, no place to stay in, etc but it’s fine we got us a sugar daddy by being unconscious
Strangling him felt like both too much and a reasonable reaction considering the… War-shaped-tensions. But going full 180 afterwards uhmm not a fan.
So yeah, from the introduction: Vincente feels like an obsessive second ML who will try to kidnap and “save” the MC from the actual ML. While MC will be like “wtf you liked me??? I couldn’t tell from your actions at all and also let me go now”
/Takes mic/ Cough-cough WHAT A CONVENIENTLY PLACED ATTRACTION–
But okay. With Geoffrey? Jeffrey?.. With this guy we start our as “horny guy that likes twinks” and by now we already know who is The Twink around here. Thanks for all the hints we ever needed, Vincente.
Now, are we distracted and horny enough to forget all about torturing the pretty redhead? Something tells me that we’re not. Ouch.
And actually is he blond? Is that him on the cover and not Drake?
Yeah, that’s a really cool way of her on what to describe when and how the different story parts are put together. But those cliffhangers in the beginning …
I also was thinking of “sugar daddies” there.
I don’t know about my Vincente feelings, whether I want to have him as second ML or not Though I liked his black coat

Reading the word “torturing” in this chapter I got those real pictures in mind and wanted to grab Kaito and hide somewhere safe (?)
A hottie

I need to pay attention next time I see his name
Chapter 6 replies
That threw me off, E-w-an? Really? But isn’t it pronounced like イーヴァン? After your message I was thinking in my head, that even Owen looks more like ユアン, but then, maybe in 2002 people where katakana-zing things differently Now I’m questioning my knowledge of English name pronounciation
But thanks a lot for pointing this out! Putting ユアン as Juan was kind of German J misspelling. And yeah, that way it really sounds like a Spanish name and yeah that would really be akward to have such a person in that context on Geoffrey’s ship (maybe I start with Geo- instead of my loved J- for Geoffrey )
EDIT: Just checked YT, and there are even videos about how to pronounce this name correctly and it is not イーヴァン but ユーアン, resp ユアン. OMG!
I want to step in with my own Vicente thoughts, but does that count as unintentional spoilers if I say he’s super cool or super lame?
I will say that, among all the people I’ve seen polled on favorite boys in F&B, there’s generally a fairly even spread (with the caveat that I haven’t polled that many people, haha).
Ch. 6 reply
The character is Scottish (it’s mentioned much later as an incidental), which was what originally clued me in to the (probably) correct romanization.
I read this in a bunch of really small pieces over the course of a few days, but thankfully it was pretty easy, except maybe for the part about Geoffrey’s parents. I also enjoyed having to see poor Rufus chasing along after his boss and trying to downgrade his sins by getting him to maybe go after women in a brothel instead
I had also assumed that the blonde was Drake! All my expectations have been thrown into turmoil
If you need any clarification I’m happy to provide!
Rufus is the true MVP here, haha. Makes me wonder when exactly he found out what he signed up for when he joined the crew…
Same thing happened to me when I first started reading, haha. I think the issue is is they prime you with all this talk about prominent male historical person, and in a BL the first non-protag, non-clearly side character sorry Kazuya is usually the other lead, right?
Oh this one was fun! I meant to get through it a lot quicker, but this has been my go to bed read and I keep on falling asleep midway through the chapters
I thought Kaito did a pretty good job of thinking on his feet, especially weaving together the fiction of how he got there with the actual fact of how he met Vicente. There were some… plot holes, but maybe not so obvious for people who didn’t know what was happening?
I did feel a little bad for him when he finally got the ok to be on the boat, and then Geoffrey was like, ok well then, I’m your captain now, so you’ll behave, and Kaito is like… ehhhh. Oh and then he proceeded to ask about his sex life () and ask what would happen if he expected cabin boy duties to include the bedroom.. and then he gives him his clothes to wear. Absolutely no flags there…
Random.. English question I guess:
The sailors call Drake Sir Francis.. is that how titles work in English? Like can you call somebody Sir/Dame First name? I was trying to figure out why it seems wrong to me. I feel like I only ever hear that title with a full name. Not even Sir/Dame Last name.. it’s Sir Francis Drake, Sir Patrick Stewart, Dame Judy Dench, never Sir Drake, absolutely not Sir Patrick.
That’s a good question. I’m not entirely sure; I have the same experience with you, where I would expect at least “Sir Last name” or “Sir Full name”, but iirc correctly they’re fairly consistent using “Sir First name” in this series. Makes me wonder if it’s an over-correction from the author on the whole “English speakers tend to refer to others by their first name when a Japanese person might do so by their last”.
This is not an overcorrection, it really works that way: Sir - Wikipedia
The prefix is used with the holder’s given name or full name, but never with the surname alone. For example, whilst Sir Alexander and Sir Alexander Fleming would be correct, Sir Fleming would not.[2]
