Home thread for SeaBed - informal Visual Novel Book Club

Ooh I’ll have to check that out. Thx for the mention

Looks like I made a mistake in the header in this thread. VNDB lists this VN as 185.000 WORDS, and 406.000 CHARACTERS. So about twice as long as I thought. I’ll edit the first post in this thread, but I just wanted to mention it here too.

One page in a normal book is about 450 characters, right? So this VN is about 900 pages in a normal book.

Thanks! I’m always looking for new tools to help me when reading VNs. I’ll check it out!

That helps put things in perspective - thx!

About the difficulty level of this VN:

According to JPDB, this is the difficulty level for SeaBed:
|Average difficulty|61/100|
|Peak difficulty (90th percentile)|77/100|

And this is the difficulty level for the first Flowers VN:
|Average difficulty|35/100|
|Peak difficulty (90th percentile)|47/100|

So JPDB thinks that SeaBed is more difficult, but from what little I have read of Flowers, I agree with you that SeaBed seems easier. Hard to say really. I’m really glad that I have access to text hookers, that’s all I can say!

Omg - I had no clue that both of them have jpdb decks!! This is very useful to know.

I’ll see if my opinion changes once I’m further in, I guess. For anyone wondering, here’s how jpdb calculates difficulty: Frequently asked questions – jpdb - as always, levels can’t tell you why/how something is difficult

My jpdb is focused on 美少女戦士セーラームーンクリスタル Season I: Dark Kingdom | L28 rn, but it’s a pretty small vocab set for me. So I’ll definitely be starting SeaBed deck soon

This sound’s fun. Maybe I will join

For anyone else trying to get this to work, the setup video fails to include the essential step of “you have to install the dictionaries inside this app’s Yomitan as well”… which may be obvious, but took me a while to piece together

Have you played around with the different OCR engine choices? Edit: nevermind - Google Lens needs API agreement, but it won’t let the browser login, due to security reasons. I’m not bothering w/ Cloud Vision, b/c I don’t wanna bother with Google’s whole potential billing system.

I switched it over to JPDB Reader instead of Yomitan… it’s great, but unfortunately I can’t sign into my jpdb b/c of the browser security stuff (I use Google signin) I am gonna try out JPDB Web Reader in my browser tho!

Anyway, I’m finding yomininja to be helpful but a bit laggy in activating the overlay… which I don’t mind with Fate/Stay Night, but do mind a bit with this. My primary strategy will still be jpdb pre-study, but this definitely helps reduce the friction, and means I don’t have to pick up my phone. So glad to learn of it

That’s where I am now too.

First impression: This VN is a bit confusing! Jumping between this person’s viewpoint and that person’s viewpoint, and jumping back and forth in time. I’m used to VNs that follow a linear story, and this VN is not that!

Second thought: This VN is beautiful! I love the style of the background drawings, like watercolor pastel. I want to read and read and read more, just to see more of the backgrounds!

I also like the fact that the characters are adults. I have had it with teenage angst!

Have you read the tips? I found that part even more confusing. Whose viewpoint is this?! Hopefully it will get clearer as we go along.

The difficulty level is OK now that I have gotten a bit further into the VN. Reading first on PC and looking up what I can, and then checking by reading the English translation on Switch later. I have no idea of the character count though. JL gives me a character count, but I think it might be too high. Not that it matters anyway. I’ll just keep reading until the end anyway!

It’s pretty clear whose perspective it is at any given moment (like it literally says on screen), but the time skips are pretty annoying, since they don’t specify

I’ve only gotten one so far, and nothing seems to happen when I try to open it. Not sure if I’m missing something

I can’t say I’m that hooked on the story yet, and hope it picks up soon

Side note about relative difficulty - it occurs to me that jpdb has all the flowers games separately - and I have to wonder if the rating would be higher, if they were one entry (not that I’m past the first game)

Sry I can’t be helpful wrt character count

I’m not sure I feel a meaningful difference yet? But maybe as the story progresses I will. I’ll try to get a bit further in & see

I coincidentally saw this vn on a difficulty list where it was rated a 6.5 out of 10. For comparison Higurashi was rated 6, and fate stay night was rated a 7.

edited to add: I found the list again in my history

For me it opens when I click this button

below the selection. It did take a while to load the first time though. Maybe you didn’t wait long enough?

Interesting! Thank you!

Yup. What’s difficult for me may be easy for you, and vice versa. But it does feel easier the more I read it, which is good I guess.

南の島 - finally something interesting

Finally something interesting happened! Between the cave exploration and the night photos - those were the first backgrounds that I thought were really beautiful… also things steamed up quite a bit. So far the hardest thing has been the astronomy section - which was pretty unfamiliar to me (and I have poor knowledge of astronomy in generally), but YomiNinja to the rescue it wasn’t so bad

Ohhh thank you. I never would have found that on my own

More on difficulty

I can’t comment on Higurashi, but unless something drastically different is coming, Fate is exponentially harder than flowers or SeaBed - even if you were just going by the vocab, and not accounting for writing style and grammar. So I can only assume that the things above Fate on that list are like extremely hard, or that SeaBed being unvoiced is upping their rating

Fwiw, the highest level things I’ve read are 薬屋のひとりごと 1 | L 38 and 花物語 上 | L39 . At least in the first 43 pgs (and the anime) for 薬屋のひとりごと, it feels notably easier than Fate (which I’ve read in English & dropped 3 times in JP), and in 93 pgs of 花物語 I’d say the hardest sections of that are comparable in difficulty.

Anyway, I guess we’ll just have to wait and see as we get further in :woman_shrugging:

I started to read it, but not knowing whose viewpoint it was, nor what the context was, I decided I just don’t care for rn. I feel like there may have been some reference to 008号 around when we got the tip? But it’s totally out of my memory at this point. Like you said, hopefully it will get clearer later

I don’t want to start anything new at the moment. But I’ll see what everyone thinks and keep this in my mental to read pile. I’ve known of this as one of the more pop popular/highly rated (yuri) VNs.
I’ve just read the synopsis for the first time and it sounds very interesting.

I’m slowly slowly reading this VN, enjoying the art and the music. I haven’t reached the end of the prologue yet. No idea how much I have left of the prologue either, but I’m not in a rush.

@暁のルナ how are you doing?

I think I got through the first chapter? It’s getting interesting, but I’m not quite hooked yet. I’ve been focused on other reads tho. May make more progress this week, but not sure

SeaBed is on sale on Steam now, if someone wants to try it!

This VN keeps pulling me in. It feels like an onion, peeling back one layer after the other, wondering what’s next. Still reading the prologue. It’s long! Watching Sachiko and and Takako on vacation, in a beautiful cave with fire flies and romance by the beach and then suddenly a few years (??) later, back in the city, Sachiko meeting a psychiatrist friend at a cafe, telling her that Takako has disappeared… One layer on top of another. I can’t wait to read more! (and Hibiki, written like echo, what a perfect name for a psychiatrist!)

Sounds like it’s getting more interesting then. I might try making some more progress on it this week
