I’ve been having a hard time getting back to reading novels in korean (I’ve been reading random webtoons and webnovels…), and so I haven’t made much more progress with the previous sci-fi book club, but that will not prevent me from trying to start this one. Maybe an ongoing book club will be a good external motivation. Book loaded on my kobo (thank you @suadang), let’s go~
There was a section halfway talking about 찬’s background that was a spike in difficulty but otherwise it was manageable and I understood more than I thought I would
I had some trouble initially figuring out who was speaking, but toward the end I got it (it was the narrator and their 선배 telling them stories right?)
I honestly wished it was a bit spookier and had a crushingly sad ending but that’s just the kind of reader I am Enjoyed it overall and I hope the 연구소 appears in future stories.
I’m happy to let you know that this entire collection is about the 연구소 lol. So think of this as an introduction. Me personally I’m interested to hear about the dead bird, and I thought all the stories were very creepy, especially the one in the tunnel.
Also was a bit thrown off by the changes in perspective, but made more sense skimming at the end.
Will be interesting to see how the stories tie into each other. Also wondering if/how much significance there is to the named being one character. Also the suspicion of the “MC” that the two people 선배 told stories about could be living a different fate.
Wild speculation time: 선배 isn’t real/is a hallucination?
Also the literalist in me is questioning why theyd turn all the lights off in a supernatural 연구소 at night and why all the things to avoid aren’t in employee orientation . Maybe that would be good material for a genre parody lol.
Also finished Week 2. Like Sua said was quite slow and not scary enough for me There were too many characters I didn’t care about personally and huge blocks of text. Definitely lacked impact / sense of doom compared to W1
Excited to get back to the 연구소 by next week hopefully!
Finally read week 1 ! Same as @acire , except for a spike of difficulty in the middle, it was a rather smooth read, just there were quite a few times where the content gave me pause, wondering if I was understanding correctly until a few sentences later revealed that indeed, Korean was not the issue lol. It was the right amount of creepiness/spookyness for my taste.
I Iam gonna catch up this coming week, although not excited for W2 based on the comments.
I finished Week two about a week ago, just writing about it now. It also was kinda meh.
It honestly reminded me of the 외국인 위한 한국어 읽기 stories in it felt like a simple folklore story haha.
The funniest part to me though was the part where the author basically said “This is the part in the story that something spooky like this would happen, but that didn’t happen”. And that after that it took so long to get spooky, and honestly the spooky stuff was so mildly spooky, it made it even more funny that the author decided to include that earlier line at all.
Anyways, hoping that was the weakest story and that the next ones improve.
