Have we decided a start date for this yet? I just finished my other digital read so I’m good to go on this one.
Actually, no idea what I was thinking with the previous post (which is now deleted), ranked poll isn’t a good idea for this. We want to start on a date most people think would at least be decent for them. Sorry about that!
So let’s go again…
- May 17th
- May 24th
- May 31st
- later
Is voting for everything the same as voting for nothing? Yes. Did it stop me from doing it? Absolutely not.
It shows us that you are interested in the poll and that all of the options are good for you… definitely not the same
Lol I was like intriguing use of the ranked choice poll but I’ll roll with it
Seeing the current state of the poll, I do have some conflicted feelings on not leaving it as a ranked choice…
And not defining a tie breaker, or closing time for that matter.
You’re hosting, you get to decide what we do
Just start on the earliest date with the highest percentage. The point of a poll like this is to determine whether start dates would be prohibitive, no?
I usually set a week for any polls… Tho in this case that would be the 17th - so maybe 5 days? (Up to you of course)
Yeah I think this is a “the host decides” scenario. Go forth!
Alright! Then my decision as the host is that we’ll start May 24th
(Because I don’t know whether @snowwater can start earlier, and in the hopes that @soggyboy would’ve just preferred earlier but can also start then.)
I’ll just have to wait patiently for the start date and finish some other reads in the meantime or start like 10 more books
24th would be great for me to have an extra week to wrap up current clubs, thanks!
I made a rough plan to see how it’ll look like if we read 15 pages per week - chapter 1 will be divided into 3 parts, and chapter 2 into 4 parts. That’ll be our first 7 weeks. Let’s check the speed with our participants afterwards to see how we’ll continue!
Unfortunately the book (or at least the first chapter) doesn’t seem to have convenient stopping points for book club purposes. Definitely an oversight by the author, that. Chapter 1 has exactly three parts cordoned off by ◆◆◆◆, but part 1 is incredibly long, part 2 extremely short, and part 3 also pretty short.
So for now I’m going with the good old “Pick stopping points roughly evenly apart by counting pages, then read ahead to the next stopping point to see if it’s any good.” method. On the downside, that means that the the schedule will always be updated only shortly before the next week starts because I don’t want to read ahead too soon, but on the upside - we’ll hopefully have fairly decent stopping points.
In other news, I’ve read the part for our first week, and my desired stopping point turned out to be pretty good. I updated the schedule
Thanks for all the effort you’re putting into it! Looking forward to starting next week
Btw, since I don’t have a physical edition I’ll try to roughly mark the end page (by calculating x% of 320 pages), but I have no idea whether those are accurate. If anybody reading physical finds the proper page for a week, please tell me so I can correct the entry in the schedule.
→ page 16. Probably as the book starts on page four, not zero.
Yeah, it’s probably that. Thanks!
Let’s go!!
