Is this a gay love story?
Man, I feel really bad because I never was able to start the book. Just posting here to let the world know that I still intend to, though; it’s loaded up in my Kindle and everything. o7
I’ve been poking at it but I think I’m still a week or so behind… it seems like @bibliothecary has had something going on and wasn’t able to run clubs right now and without the pressure to keep up with the group I’ve slacked on all my book club books. I have thoroughly enjoyed what I have read though, fwiw
Read up through chapter five. What a healing manga in a rather distressing way. I’ve thankfully never worked under a boss as bad as 桃瀬’s, but the thought of such anxiety triggered by someone else’s cologne or overhearing bits of someone else’s phone conversation makes me both sympathetic and very sad. Like, 白崎主任 acts more like a reminder for me, the reader, that there are normal, kind people out there as we watch 桃瀬’s journey of self-healing. Not quite what I was expecting out of a goofy “my boss is such an airhead!!”, but here we are. Enjoying it.
…I’m also going through a small existential crisis in enjoying 白崎’s antics, while knowing someone in real life who acts similarly and they drive me up the wall. I’m trying to use his example to tell myself to be more patient with them, but…
So could be things change later on, but so far I have not been reading this as BL. I could see where the argument could be (vibes can be powerful things), but imo 桃瀬’s trauma just kind of amplifies any positive feelings accidentally.
Finished chapter 6, and I have a question for you all: (this is the general premise of the chapter, so I’m spoiling to be safe, but it’s kind of hard to spoil “the boss was funny at the end”…) anyone know if it’s typical in Japan (or elsewhere) to ignore a fire drill? In my workplace it’s typical to go out to the safe zones as part of the drill. They pretty casually ignore the fire alarm, though.
And done! Very cute story; I don’t know how long the author could justifiably stretch the concept with just the material set up in volume one, but I had a good time. The 課長 was already starting to wear a bit thin for me there at the end; it’s no longer funny if he has to constantly verbalize how likely he is, imo. Might pick up the second volume in the future just to round it off.
Hm I’ve had both type of drills, the one where you have to leave and even get a fire extinguisher demo, and the ones where we just ignore because it’s just them testing the alarm going off correctly.
I wondered throughout the story if the whole thing is some kind of metaphor for toxic relationships in general. Like, from my viewpoint the ex bosses seem quite exaggerated (though there may workplaces like this?).
Finished up all the chapters, which is only about half of the volume… gonna keep poking at it a bit a day. It’s not a hard read but between this and a few other books I’m starting to realize how much I rely on furigana, so it’s a bit of slow going for me to get through. That said, I’ve really been enjoying it a lot so far. I think my favorite chapter was #8 (with the haunted house). Pretty much every chapter had me laughing out loud for at least one part. I already picked up volume 2 and I think I’ll probably end up watching the anime at some point as well.
I finished the volume and watched half an episode. I think anime is cuter, the graphics are better imo.
I’ve been told I could ignore a fire/disaster drill if I wanted before. But I think it was mostly because there weren’t any English speaking staff around so they didn’t think I’d get much out of it?
My very sweet coworker said “we escape now, but stay ok”
nothing like in this story though
I loved the anime (reason why I picked up the manga), also it some point it progresses past the manga. I hope there’ll be a second season and also hoping for more spotlight for my favs 金城 and 青山.
I feel like the short form manga like this can go either way, so I’m happy to hear that the anime is a good watch. I’m gonna add it to my list once I’m finished with the second book.
