I was waiting for the weekly thread or some other official start of the discussions. Also, I tend to be lazy and not write much.
Chapter 1
This wasn’ all that great.
The art isn’t very attractive in my opinion. Everyone has the same face. And it’s been sharp and digital feeling.
They introduced all 5 love interest at breakneck pace. So it’s really just been an introduction to the concept and the cast.
I understand it’s the concept that all 5 seem like probably girlfriend candidates. But they are a little too forward. Both in that you’d want a variety of personalities and that stripping your sleeping room mate you’ve never met seems a little unethical to me.
I didn’t exactly understand what function that teacher had. I learned that 教授 apparently means professor. Did she have a meeting because she takes a course with her? Or is each student assigned a “mentor”? (I visited my “mentor” exactly once and not in a 1:1 meeting.)
Also I’m new to this, do we spoiler blur our opinions or is hiding it in a detail box better? I’ll put it in a box this time so don’t click if you haven’t read yet.
week 1 thoughts
This first chapter just feels like setup. I’m not hooked in at all but I’m not mad at it yet either.
We met all 5 love interests, but I feel like it’s been really superficial so far. We only get to know one or two things about each person before moving to the next which makes it feel like speed dating.
Now that I’m thinking about it, we didn’t really learn much about the main character either… lol
This first section also has some obvious ethical issues/reckless behavior (professor/student power dynamics, undressing the sleeping roommate, making out with the drunk girl). I’m going to opt for not taking it too seriously at this point. So far the only girls that are chill are the classmate and the bartender.
I had no real trouble with the language. It took me a little bit to understand the context of the word 抜けられなくて on page 1, but I struggle with that word in general and it wasn’t important.
In summary, not a great start and I need more details about the love interests to start caring.
I kind of agree. I had to go through all the faces at the end to make sure I knew who each person was.
I think it’s implied that it is an advisor meeting that is part of her 入学 activities. I think she had to pick classes at some point too right? Idk the focus is on the girlies!
I don’t know those formats, but I use yyyy-mm-dd anywhere I can. It’s less ambiguous and for file systems it sorts properly!
It’s up to you! If you just have a small part that’s a spoiler it can be okay to blur just that part. If you find yourself writing a lot, the details section is usually better.
Not sure what you were expecting, but it’s a harem so it’s best to keep expectations low in general.
And related to that…
Of course I hope you enjoy this manga, but if you don’t I hope you take it more as a statement about harems than yuri. I (and others) can definitely recommend more grounded yuri series if you’re interested.
By the way @shablul, I think part of the confusion about whether the book club started is that this topic being called “Home Thread” implies you’re going to create weekly topics. Since that’s not the case, you might want to rename this to “Volume 1” or something instead.
I don’t have a lot of experience reading stuff like this, so I didn’t have expectations. I might end up tapping out if it continues to feel like this though.
I’ll give it another week to be sure! Curious to see some other opinions about chapter 1 as well.
JP = 2024年9月10日 - the point being it has the 年 月 日 symbols ISO 8061 standard starts yyyy-mm-dd (or yyyymmdd), and then continues to hrs, min, sec, time offset. Hence why yyyy-mm-dd sorts properly. Also my post should have said “almost as good”, but I didn’t proofread it till now
Never underestimate my ability to miss something incredibly obvious
Blurring out the not-girlfriend’s face in the “prologue” with a squiggle is pretty cute; haven’t seen that before.
メイ’s first thought being “胸!!!” is such a shounen-usual response it took me a second seeing it here, haha. I’m not used to that being the first thought from the girl, haha.
リリ: “sorry, did I squeeze your hands too hard? it’s a an occupational hazard, I’m an idol” Just the thought of idols having super strong hand muscles is an oddly hilarious thought.
Oh wow, beau #2 is a 教授? メイ moves fast. Can’t wait to meet the university president next.
Wait, is メイ her only student? It kind of sounds like マリア is an advisor of some sort or teaches a super selective class based on how she only takes students with top grades, but then why is メイ here? To apply?
Ah, maybe my question’s been answered? メイ does seem to be applying to classes, which feels weird for a freshman.
Gross, drinking with boys? Good thing the kiss demon’s around.
Oh good, her new roommate’s a werewolf.
I gotta say, メイ, I wouldn’t stress too much over which girl to pick. You seem pretty easily pleased, so even if one doesn’t work out I’m sure you’ll bounce back soon.
I liked the first chapter! The art style’s a bit boring for my taste, but it’s clean enough. I’m probably leaning towards idol classmate at the moment, though we’ll have to wait for further character development.
I do agree that the manga starts off really fast, but I take it more as an indication of what the reader is supposed to expect from it: fast-paced, non-serious, yuri everywhere kind of thing, as opposed to a more contemplative or realistic series. Having 5 girls to have to (presumably) spend equal time on in four volumes isn’t a whole lot of page space either, so I’d be disappointed if it were much slower, to be honest.
Not to worry, I’ve read a fair amount of BL trash so this is just a gender-swap for me, haha. As long as the manga continues to realize how goofy it is I’m good. That’s not to say I wouldn’t mind reading more serious works for sure, though! Hopefully we get some good ones through the club. I don’t suppose we have any top-tier yuri lists lying around, do we?
Finished week 2. So far it looks like the roommate might be the best long-term option: if she ends up being a diplomat, メイ could retire early and just be a trophy wife potentially.
Also, we’re really starting to see a pattern where each girl is majorly attracted by one particular feature on メイ as far as I can tell, so we’re setting up pretty well for a true harem end imo.
The way you put this I thought at least make that thing blood and the story about vampires. (I assume Vampire BL is a thing? Or is that more a lesbian thing?).
I was hoping the classmate at least liked her for her personality or at least for being nice to her. But maybe you are right and she is just after Mei’s soft face.
I think one girl didn’t appear this chapter (the one she met at the drinking party). Maybe her thing is kissing?
