Life is too short for re-reading things (I say, even though I have read 本好き like three times), but I’m looking forward to the discussions in the thread
Finished the title story! In one day, which I’m very pleased with. (For those not familiar with the title story, it begins on November 7th, and our protagonist falls into a time loop, a lá à la Groundhog Day, so very appropriate.)
(Full story spoilers)
I enjoyed it! After she met up with the other Replayers, I think the story’s tone went from kind of scary to rather peaceful and thoughtful for me. I read it as an extended metaphor for life, and was very pleased with the ending. I was concerned for a moment she wouldn’t meet 北風伯爵, but I wasn’t disappointed.
This definitely felt like a short story that would be assigned for school reading to be analyzed, haha. I’m curious how the other stories in the collection will go; I’m hoping for a bit for more spooky or atmospheric stuff.
Reading this was much easier than I thought it’d be; perhaps the other stories are more difficult, but the title story doesn’t feel like an L31 to be at all. Maybe a L27 at most.
If memory serves, the beginning of the second story and parts of the third one felt harder. That being said, I had a lot less reading experience when I read this book, so I’m not 100% sure. Still, L31 does sound a bit high.
@eefara I think I let you down a bit here I read a bit on the 7th and continued a bit on the 8th, about 30 pages in total. But then I realized that I need to tend to my other books a bit more, and to the ongoing and upcoming book clubs so I stopped for the time being.
Maybe I can continue the story next year on Nov 7th
And for good reason, wow!
Happy to continue the discussion, though - as long as my memory plays along
No worries at all! I’m going to be much slower with stories two and three and anyway; I have too many books on my own plate. I’ll be here when you’re able to jump back in!
Just reached part 6 of 神家没落; I like the contrast with the previous story. MC in 秋の牢獄 goes through a whole existential crisis about being stuck in a time loop, while our dude here is just like, “well I guess I live here now”.
I felt bad for the kittens the woman dumped in the rain (part 5). I was hoping MC could adopt them, though he’s severely short of cat-friendly food.
I love how he is the uncanny unexplained event (monster?) when people meet him. (To be fair, to some extent, he tries to lure them into taking his place)
Finally started yesterday and the first story is a time loop one, I am already intrigued.
Naphthalene, completely OT, but I didn’t want to bother you with a DM and I saw you lurking here
If you saw オードブル in a book and knew it was French, would you be able to guess what it was? We were recently talking about if French natives can decipher katakana French. We (non-natives) could not, even though we all knew the word it was meant to be. I have encountered katakana French before and to me it’s just… random noise.
Wut? It’s French?? I know what オードブル is from going to restaurants, but I never questioned where the word came from.
I just looked it up and it’s supposed to be hors-d’œuvre?? I mean, that’s what it is, but I never made the connection to this day.
Oh really? I could not make heads or tails of it when I heard it for the first time. I was like “pot-off, pot-off, what could that mean ”
This is probably the difference between hearing a garbled word in your native language and hearing it in your second (or fourth , in case of me and French) language
