天気の子 (Weathering With You) is a fantasy/supernatural romance LN by 新海誠, released alongside his movie of the same name.
We’ll be starting the casual read-along on Tues, Jan 2nd and aiming for about 100 pg/week, though anyone’s welcome to join even after that as well. General spoiler courtesy applies.
I put off getting this thread up for a bit bc I have no idea how to set up a semi-scheduled club or anything, but I’ve basically accepted that I’m just not gonna know what to write/how to phrase anything. If the home post needs more info, tell me, and I’ll add it.
Anyway, I’ll be going into this one completely blind. I haven’t even watched the movie. (I think the only of Shinkai’s movies I’ve watched is すずめの戸締まり, and that was after I got a couple of his books.) I just bought it because I know he’s popular lol. I have not learned from my experience with Murakami. Hopefully it’s good!
Ooof, guys, I’m so torn.
I haven’t been making very good progress on the second 本好き book. I haven’t watched 天気の子, but I really liked 君の名は (the movie), and I remember wanting to read/watch this one since hearing about it on the (sadly defunct) podcast Nihongo Switch. My current requirement for reading (unless it’s a manga or something that I really, really want to read) is having an audiobook to read along with since my 2024 goal is to improve my listening skills. I could put 好き on pause and read along with 天気の子, but I also was planning on reading both ふしぎ駄菓子屋銭天堂 and また、同じ夢を見ていた along with their book clubs.
Does this post mean basically nothing because I’ve probably already decided to read it? Yes, yes it does
Looks very fine to me! The only thing I was somewhat looking for in the home post is a participation poll (like „I‘m currently reading“ / „I‘ve finished“ / „I‘m not planning to read“ or whatever you see fit). Some other book clubs also poll for the media (paperback/ebook/audiobook) but that’s not really as important to me.
Anyways, thanks for setting up this thread, and looking forward to the book!
Ooh, there are quite a few chapters in this, and they divide into three fairly evenly, too. I think I’m personally gonna aim for week 1 序章〜第四章, week 2 第五章〜第八章, and week 3 第九章〜終章, maybe 1 ch/day on the days that I read. I’d rather have uneven pages than leave off in the middle of a chapter if I can help it.
If I edit the home post with the poll still open, will that mess up the poll? I didn’t think to add the 目次 with page count per chapter in case anyone didn’t wanna do math
No, @nikoru asked to do a read-along for this in January, planning to read it in 3 weeks at about 100 pg/wk. That’s part of why I put the “different pace” option in the poll—I know that’s a lot for some people, especially if they’ve got other clubs going on (and even if not). That, and this is still informal.
I cheated a little bit and started last week, so I’m about halfway through chapter 1, but I’m going to have to turn on the afterburners to keep up with 100pg/week.
So far I’m enjoying it, but am going to keep my mouth shut for a few days. I’m reading along with the audiobook–not sure if anyone else is listening–but the main narrator (it seems to have at least two) mumbles a lot. Which I guess is a good thing because I always have trouble understanding men’s mumbly speech.
Just picked up the book today from Amazon.co.jp, so I will be starting this evening on kindle. Seems like the book isnt that long, it listed at 243 pages. I will definitely try to keep up with the 100 pg a week goal, but will for sure finish in the 3 weeks. Thanks for putting this together!
I think I will be getting Shinkai’s other novels at some point. I love his descriptions. (Probably some of the novelizations not written by him too, tbh; I know there were at least a couple that sounded interesting.) Also I now have a description that I wanna use in my own writing, from one of the sentences about the kitten: “夜から切り出したみたいに真っ黒な猫だった.” I really wanna describe something—well, it’ll probably be someone’s hair, and then I can describe their eyes as shining with stars/starlight, but we’ll see—as being “pitch black, as though cut from the cloth of the very night itself.” Or y’know something like that.
